Cardinal Wuerl to give invocation at mayor's inauguration despite his support for gay marriage

Wouldn't Henry VIII love the bench of bishops in the United States -- at least those like Cardinal Wuerl who is scheduled to give the invocation at Vincent Gray's inauguration as mayor of D.C. Gray is a pro gay marriage Catholic who says he attends Mass regularly (and presumably receives Communion while he thumbs his nose at the Church) but that apparently doesn't give the cardinal a qualm.

I wish I could believe that he'll pray that the government of D.C. will stand up for traditional marriage, but the odds of that seem pretty slim. This is, after all, the man who turned a blind eye to Nancy Pelosi's coronation at Trinity College where the Mass was celebrated by the notorious pro-abortion Jesuit Fr. Robert Drinan.

The cardinal has also made it clear he has no problem giving Jesus to those receiving Communion sacrilegiously.

No, there's not much hope that Cardinal Wuerl will publicly offend the high and mighty by raining on the inaugural parade. It would be so outrĂ© and he might be banned from the elite D.C. society. Just think, what if he had no social options but slumming it with ordinary faithful Catholics in the pew?

  2. How do you love the partying Prodigal's son so that he will think about home one more time - while not letting him misunderstand that you're bringing more money or more good times to him?

I think the Shepherd is trying to balance this.

What do you do when the right thing for this mayor's soul might scandalize the well-formed other Catholics?

I think we can take it - not happily, but we'll move on undeterred and keep loving the sinner and not the sin in true humility.

The other attendees that are Catholic? They voted for him - they know his, the Church's stance and are under no delusions. He's the enemy, but they're glad he's there for their guy. Maybe they'll see he's not a wolf or a pedophile or a Rottweiler, but a kind gentle man who chose Jesus for his life.

Or maybe he should decline and see if the mayor is vindictive as well as infested.

  3. Isn't this the same Cardinal Wuerl who sought exemptions concerning adoptions/employment benefits in DC once that city approved samesex marriage?

  4. Mayor-elect Gray also supports tax payer funded abortion. No way is this man Catholic--but then no way is Wuerl either: I wonder what the pope was signalling when he gave him the cathedral: St. Peter in chains. Wuerl entered the Cardinalcy through the patronage of Cardinal Wright--whose ring according to the Catholic Standard of 12/16 he recently gave to the diocese of Pittsburgh (now that he has his own to wear). [Funny how a non-supporter of gay marriage would be carrying around another man's ring for 30 odd years.]

Jesus says of such in John Chapter 10: Truly I assure you: Whoever does not enter the sheepfold through the gate but climbs in some other way is a Thief and a Marauder. The one who enters through the gate is shepherd of the sheep; the keeper opens the gate for him. The sheep hear his voice as he calls his own by name and leads them out. When he has brought out [all] those that are his, he walks in front of them, and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They will not follow a stranger; such a one they will flee, because they do not recognize a stranger's voice".

And so many Catholics have fled.
