In Honor of the Papal Encyclical on the Envirnoment...

I sprayed my circle garden out front with a very effective weed killer -- white vinegar. It's non-toxic and as effective as all get out. You can check out my results here.

And now, I need to get down to reading the encyclical. I have a feeling I"m going to be shaking my head as I read.

  1. I cannot finish reading the encyclical. The first part already showed me that he is more concern about the earth than salvation of souls. I feel like the earth is his center and not God.

  2. I just started reading the encyclical, but scratched my head at the "fragility of the planet" statement early on. I don't see any indication that the planet is "fragile." Just the opposite. It is incredibly resilient. One example -- When Mt. St. Helen's blew up it looked like a complete wasteland. It was about as devastating a situation as you could get -- like a nuclear blast. And it was natural, not man-made. Yet 30 years later the area is well on the way to recovery. In fact, ecologists are surprised that the area is recovering as rapidly as it is. Things are different, obviously, but Mt. St. Helen's indicates exactly how strong planet earth is. Here's an interesting article on the recovery. I fear the pope is surrounding himself with radicals.

  3. I wonder if we'll get time off Purgatory for slogging through that mess. I'm in the midst of it now.

  4. I take it the vinegar pretty much kills any pant it contacts? So you would need to spray selectively? Does it seep to nearby plants? Are you applying it to the leaves or trying to hit at the roots?

Sorry for all the questions, but it seems like a great weedkiller, and as you say, cheap and enviro-friendly?

  5. I'd say yes, C. Matt, that it kills the targeted plants. I was primarily using it on plants in the path and on the driveway around the circle, although I did spray a few thistles in parts of the garden where they were isolated.

I haven't noticed any impact where I didn't actually spray so I think the plants in the flower bed aren't bothered. I aimed at the leaves, especially with the broad-leafed plants and that seems very effective. But I'm only doing it on a sunny day with no rain predicted. I think the impact is magnified by the sun shining on the plant -- really burns it up.
