How do you recognize a faithful priest?

First of all, he never preaches anything but the truth. He preaches the word of God in its fullness. He never undermines the doctrine of the Church or promotes heresy and dissent. He prays the liturgy with reverence and follows the rubrics. He loves the Blessed Mother, guardian angels, and the saints. He knows that love isn't a warm, fuzzy feeling but a strong desire for the greatest good for the other, i.e., eternal salvation. He knows that sometimes love requires speaking the hard truth.

On the other hand, how do you recognize a priest who can't be trusted?
He preaches mush love. He is happy to undermine the doctrines of the Church, often in the name of a never-defined "freedom of conscience." When he elevates conscience to the level of God, he never talks about the obligation to form a conscience according to the mind of the Church because she has the authority to teach God's truth. He supports dissent groups and slanders strong Catholics who are courageous enough to speak the truth when he won't, either because he doesn't believe it or he fears the outcome. He loves places of honor at banquets and on committees and chides those who don't show him the proper respect. He loves hobnobbing with the rich and the powerful and never thinks of offending them by warning them that their actions risk damnation. The warning trumpet is too loud and discordant for his taste. He would rather pipe a dance tune.

Which brings me to Fr. James Martin, S.J. We've had our differences in the past. (See here -- especially Father's comments).

Anyway, I wasn't surprised that, following the SCOTUS decision on gay "marriage," he was quick to condemn anyone who spoke strongly against it is homophobic and guilty of hate speech. (See Phil Lawler's post here.) Fr. Martin's response is not surprising. He has been an enabler on homosexuality and sodomite "marriage" for years. Here are just a few examples of his wishy-washy Catholicism. It makes one wonder about where he is on the "spectrum" of sexuality:
Praising gay, dissenting priest Fr. Robert Pierson -- Fr. Pirson is a heretic. All you have to do is watch his video and see how he openly dissents from Church teaching to realize it. See more here.
Weeding out gays from seminaries -- Fr. Martin laments weeding out gays from seminaries. In this article he promotes the popular nonsense promoted by sex pervert Dr. Alfred Kinsey that "All sexuality, psychologists say, is on a spectrum: no one is 'purely' straight or gay." What nonsense! They are the same experts telling us that the naked emperor is wearing impeccably tailored robes.
Criticizing Pope Benedict  because he equated the dangers of abortion and same sex "marriage." Fr. Martin called it bizaree, but Pope Benedict was absolutely right. Both abortion and sodomite "marriage" attack the family. That Fr. Martin calls that "bizarre" and "discordant" shows exactly how clueless he is about God's vision of family.
Know the difference between priests who can be trusted and the hirelings who can't. Those who show their rainbow colors -- and I'm not talking about the rainbow of God's covenant with Noah -- definitely fall into the "can't be trusted" column. Don't listen to them. They risk your eternal salvation.

  1. Fr. Martin is the definition and epitome of "a man of God." Shut it.

  2. Fr. Martin's track record speaks clearly for itself (not in a good way).

BTW - your first 2 paragraphs describe not only faithful priests, but all faithful Catholics.

  3. I guess it depends on your definition of "man of God," Anonymous.

Promoting sins that cry to heaven for vengeance?

    Idolizing raging feminist nuns?

Putting out a liberal copycat version of Magnificat filled with meditations from dissenters
    and ugly artwork?

We must use different dictionaries. But I think we can agree to pray for "Fr. Jim." You do pray, right?

  4. I hate to criticize a priest but I do not trust Fr. Morris or any celebrity priest.

  5. I've never heart Fr. Morris say anything blatantly Un Catholic but I do know what you mean about him.....he seems to try to please too much by watering things down just a tad. Still not one of my favorites at all.
