Common Sense on the Mosque at Ground Zero from the WSJ

WTC Mosque, Meet the Auschwitz Nuns
Pope John Paul offers a model of tolerance for a heated controversy.

By William McGurn

With every passing day, the dispute over the planned Islamic Center near Ground Zero grows more acrimonious. These feelings will probably only get worse today, when the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission is expected to remove another hurdle by ruling against landmark status for the undistinguished old building the center will replace.

So maybe it's time to look beyond the lawyers and landmark preservation commissions and regulatory agencies. When we do, it will be hard to find a better example than the grace and wisdom Pope John Paul II exhibited during a similar clash involving another hallowed site on whose grounds innocents were also murdered: Auschwitz.  Read more...

  1. I agree with the article - and yet, for arguments sake, what if we were to do the hard thing and flip it around - and do what Bloomberg says and let them build this thing. Say in our astonishment we were indeed fooled afterall and the bad guys that blew up the trade center are being celebrated by it....

That wpuld only be because we lost the war, we ran away. If we win, won, it would be a Jefferson Davis monument beside a Civil War site, say Gettysburg - it would mean NOTHING to anybody, because they lost, their thinking lost, and our thinking won.

What is scaring us, me, is that we might lose this thing, walk away like Viet Nam. Only this time they will follow us home. In chich case, they'll have their own "White House" in NYC, because we'll be dead or Islamic - and what will it matter.

So build the mosque - and let's win this war on Terror, and it will be the day afterward either a tower of healing or a tower of uselessness but for peace loving, God loving Muslims - no disrepect intended.

So, if they wont be the bigger people (not bigger than, but opposite of small), let the Americans be such, again. Pope JP2 wanted the Catholics to be bigger than they were being.
