Is Your Parish Studying the New Translation?

The new Sacramentary translations go into effect at the Vigil Mass for the first Sunday of Advent about eight months from now. My parish is running a series introducing the changes which bring the Mass into closer alignment with the Latin. The Latin doesn't change at all, but the English will be more in accordance with what the Latin really says rather than the "dynamic equivalency" of the former translation (which wasn't equivalent at all).

I'm delighted to see the changes and I look forward to a more beautiful Mass with more poetic language that is appropriate to the solemnity of liturgy. "From east to west" becomes "From the rising of the sun to its setting...." Who can complain about that?

Is your parish preparing the people for the new translation?  Are people talking about it? Are people complaining about it? What's going on where you live?

  1. Dear Mary Ann, having grown up with Latin and having been an altar boy, I applaud the new translation. I just noticed that "from the rising to the setting of the sun" has connotations of time as well as space, which "from east to west" lacks. One more example of how a more faithful (pun intended) translation is a better one. Thank you!
