I read Keyes' piece and am not convinced that he is accurately articulating Cain's position so it seems likely to me that we have a straw man situation: characterize Cain's position (i.e. build the strawman) and then knock it down.
I'm followed Keyes for a long time and am a bit uncomfortable with him since I've seen him all too often over simplify things and mischaracterize them. I may be being unfair but I'm not convinced he's correct on Cain.
I have reservations about Alan Keyes. He's a perennial candidate who pays himself a salary from campaign contributions. He seems to me to be part of the Republican party apparatus who is used as a stalking horse to undermine the candidacy of other conservatives. He generally divides the pro-life vote. I'm not saying he is really pro-abortion, I'm just making an observation about his impact.
He's certainly an articulate and passionate speaker, but I was totally disgusted when he helped deep-six Pat Buchanan's candidacy in 1996.
