I'm With George Neumayer

Cardinal Wuerl's Continuing Crisis

I expect somebody will take issue with the paragraph below, but I agree. Go, George!

It amazes me that a clericalist culture of toadying and flattery still exists in American Church circles, given the scandals into which the bishops have routinely plunged the faithful. I have no desire to participate in this worldly game of ring-kissing in which the Cardinal Wuerls wallow. They enjoy the trappings of their office without actually exercising it for the good of souls. They demand 13th-century obedience while behaving like 21st-century flakes who play church in costume and staff.
And Cardinal Wuerl has plenty of company. Clericalism needs to be trashed. A roman collar or a crook and mitre may be symbols of the bishop's authority, but that doesn't mean he's exercising it.

A bishop is only as good as his fidelity to the deposit of the faith. Bishops who advance homosexuality in the Church like Wuerl did in Pittsburgh need to be outed for their treachery. Bishops who fail to preach the truth about abortion and contraception need to be outed for their treachery.

The reason Catholics are fighting on so many fronts in the United States today is thanks to dereliction of duty on the part of so many bishops who have loved the world and toadied to the world's powerful. They need to remember where the "kingdom, the power, and the glory" really reside.

  1. Oh, Amen and Amen, Mary Anne. It is breath taking to consider just how many people have been fooled by this man, despite his history in Pittsburgh, visible online for God and all the world to see, never mind what he has done in DC.
Did you see the award that Opus Dei arranged for him this year? Unbelievable. I would have thought Opus Dei would not be bamboozled.
Fasting for our priests, Bishops and Cardinals is much needed.

  2. And now we have the situation in Austria, where Cardinal Schonborn overruled Father Gerhard Swierzek when the latter blocked a gay man from sitting on his parish's council. We're going to see more of this, I sadly believe.

Eleven of the first twelve bishops died violent deaths because they were faithful to their Lord.

  6. Did you see the Cardinal's washing of the feet of women in the Washington Times? I thought that only men had their feet washed at the Last Supper.

  7. Anonymous of 1:10, if you really want to be "disappointed" just pop over to my post from today.

Priests are "alter Christis". Many priests such as Father Guarnizo are enduring their shares of "Good Fridays" at the hands of those who should be upholding them. What we write is very appropriate.

  8. Maria pointed out in the first response to this entry that it was very clear from his Pittsburgh days what Donald Wuerl was like—and particularly in regards to canon 915. The Vatican knew exactly what they were getting with Wuerl and they appointed him anyway. They saw what they got and they gave him a red hat for it. Now, after the Father Guarnizo debacle, he is appointed to the Congregation for the Clergy! (He also was appointed to some big post having to do with the Jews.) He is one of the most powerful Cardinals in the Church, certainly the most influential American Cardinal. If you can’t see he is doing exactly what he is told by Rome you’re very naïve. Kill the messenger if you want but it won’t solve the problem.
