The Muddled Thinking of Our Catholic School Students

It had to happen. The secular world feeds lies and distortions to our kids by the bucketful: films, videos, TV sitcoms, song lyrics, dirty dancing with the stars, violent and sexually depraved video games, easily available internet and print pornography. Good grief, you can't pass the check out at the grocery or pharmacy without blinders!

Are parents teaching their children the real faith?
So the situation in Charlotte over a nun discussing sexual issues including homosexuality has taken on a life of its own. (Perhaps nightmare would be more accurate.) The Charlotte Observer is covering the flap. So is LifeSiteNews (LSN). Here's the basic content of the student petition condemning the talk which is now closed. Interestingly, the petition can no longer even be read on the petition website. Here's what LSN reported as its content. I've highlighted several spots in red with my comments in blue:
“We the students of Charlotte Catholic High School would like to issue a formal complaint regarding Sr. Jane Dominic’s speech given on on [sic] Friday, March 21st,” the petition begins. “We found some of ideas [sic] expressed to be both offensive and unnecessarily derogatory. We are incensed that you knew the content of this speech and allowed these ideas to be expressed in a school that should be preaching a message of love and acceptance.”
“As rational people, we know that most homosexual people lead healthy, normal and productive lives like their heterosexual counterparts,” the students wrote. [This is pure unadulterated nonsense that shows how successful homosexual activists have been in portraying their depraved lifestyle which routinely includes anal sex, fisting, oral sex, group sex, numerous sexual partners including anonymous bathhouse encounters and porn shop sex, the most depraved homosexual pornography, etc. There is nothing "healthy" or "normal" about the homosexual lifestyle.]  “We resent the fact that a school wide assembly became a stage to blast the issue of homosexuality after Pope Francis said in an interview this past fall that ‘we can not [sic] insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptives [sic] methods. We are angry that someone decided they knew better than our Holy Father and invited a speaker who addressed the issue of homosexuality to our school to speak twice in the course of one school year.” [Whoa! The Holy Father's comments that these are not the ONLY issues does not mean they aren't major issues! As for not judging homosexuals his comments included a big IF, i.e, IF a homosexual is trying to live a moral life. You don't find many of those among gay activists. It's not surprising that the media has distorted what the pope said (Read him in context here.) What this petition shows is how Catholic students in Catholic schools know little about the faith and mistake the hard truth of Church doctrine as hate speech, exactly what gay activists have been jamming for years. Often these days, students want censorship of ideas they don't like, labeling them intolerant hate speech as they exhibit their own intolerance.]
The petition by the upset students was met by a counter petition which is still on-line.

A thing that concerns me greatly about this controversy are some of the comments on the student petition site. One apparently from a former Religion teacher at the school, Patricia Burns helps explain why the students are so poorly catechized:
As a former Religion teacher at Charlotte Catholic, I can't say I'm surprised by the assembly and speaker. The winds of change in the Charlotte Diocese have been blowing for some time. It is sad to know that the speaker said what she did and ignored the truth that she was directing a hate filled message  to young people...some of whom are gay and had to listen to her words.[There was nothing hateful about sister's message, but the reaction illustrates the Bible's warning that, "There will come a time when people will call evil good and good evil.]  I felt privileged to teach such wonderful young people, and I am so very proud that you have taken this route to voice your disapproval at what transpired last Friday. The message was not of God, of that you must be sure. [So Church teaching is now "not of God." No wonder these students are confused.] We are an Easter people....[Good grief, she sounds like the nuns on the bus! Easter came after Good Friday when Jesus was tortured and brutally murdered for SIN including sexual sins. Ms. Burns is typical of the marshmallow love crowd where Jesus never hurts anyone's feelings, especially by judging his actions as wrong and leading him to Gehenna. Hello! Jesus died to save us from our sins, and one of the spiritual works of mercy is to "admonish the sinner" and tell him to shape up for the sake of his immortal soul. There is NO SALVATION WITHOUT REPENTANCE!]
Another person claiming to be a former teacher in the diocese wrote:
As a former teacher for this school system, I am embarrassed at the views expresses by this speaker and used my time in the classroom to promote love for all humans, despite their differences.[Frankly I'm embarrassed by this claptrap, but the fact is that tickling peoples' ears is not love and that mortal sins aren't mere differences of opinions. The Church teaches that one unrepented mortal sin can send a soul to hell. Let me say that again. ONE UNREPENTED MORTAL SIN CAN SEND A SOUL TO HELL. What kind of love is it to preach love to someone while you push him over the cliff? With teachers like these two in the Catholic schools, no wonder kids are so confused!]
The Charlotte debacle is a heads up. Our children are losing the faith big time. They don't know how to use their "seat of judgment" to make sound moral judgments and apparently neither do some of their teachers. And, as for so many parents, well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and if the tree isn't healthy what can one expect from the fruit? Pray and fast for families.

  1. I certainly hope that Bishop Peter Jugis supports Fr. Matthew Kauth, the school chaplain. Bishops have a tendency to get weak kneed and spineless when the pressure is on. About a year ago this time, Cardinal Wuerl threw Fr. Marcel Guarnizo under the bus when he refused to give a lesbian Holy Communion at a funeral Mass.

  2. I have friends in Charlotte who think highly of him. Let's pray that he doesn't cave in to the jamming of the gay activists and their foolish fellow travelers.

  3. I have met Bishop Jugis and was very impressed with him. He's one of the good bishops. I just hope he hangs in there. He needs our prayers as does Fr. Kauth, who is arguably the best homilist I have ever heard. You can listen to his homilies on the Internet.
