Thought for the Day on the State of the Church -- Never Fear, Little Flock!

How I love reading the Imitation of Mary every morning. It puts suffering in perspective seen in the shadow of the cross of Christ. We all love to be consoled and to see a world full of sweetness and light. That is certainly not our experience at present is it? The secular city and the city of God seem to be crumbling around us.

If you feel that way, remember that feelings don't necessarily translate into facts. Following them can lead us into confusion and despair. Worried about the state of the world? Worried about the state of the Church? Take a deep breath and take heart. Nothing just happens! All is in the Providence of God. "All things work together for good for those who love the Lord and serve according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28) This consoling message comes from Book 2, chapter 32 of the Imitation of Mary:

Nothing happens in our world without His permission. And everything evil as well as good, serves His providential purposes. It is not granted to you now to understand His plans but the day will come when you will recognize their full justice and wisdom.

You should not, of course, be insensible of the evils in the Church; it is only right that they should be a source of affliction for you; you may even weep bitterly over them, as God Himself does. But if you were to be scandalized at them so that your faith suffered or you lost your peace, that would not any longer be zeal but an abuse and an excess.

.... Submission of mind to what God allows is compatible with genuine zeal for the glory of God.

Today I'm offering my holy hour for everyone who visits this blog, especially those who are discouraged and afraid. Fear is useless; what's needed is trust. We are not pawns in the hands of a mindless "fate," we are the beloved children of God, the apple of His eye. Let us all keep our eyes wide open to see His many blessings in all our joys, sorrows, and trials. Remember, nothing just happens. All is in the Providence of God.

  1. Thank you. I've been reading your blog since the Bishop Moneybags Bransfield scandal. It is sometimes difficult not to get whiplash from shaking my head so much.
