The My Little Pony Church of Annibale Bugnini: Cognitive Dissonance and the Novus Ordo

Three major principles stress the Catholicity of the Mass: the fact that it is a propitiatory sacrifice (making up for sin), a ministerial sacrifice with an ordained minister (not a presider) prepared carefully to properly carry out his sacred role, and a eucharistic sacrifice in which bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ through transubstantiation.

I urge all to watch the film on how the Novus Ordo came about and became something so radically different from the Traditional Latin Mass. It was changed, not by the Fathers of Vatican II, but by a handful of change agents led by Annibale Bugnini in order to remove everything that made the liturgy distasteful to Protestants. The movie is mind blowing.

But the devil is busy, and he managed to get the film removed from YouTube. It's interesting to hear the back story. It's short and after you can still go to the website to see the trilogy of films about how the revolution came about. Watch the short clip below and then go to latinmass.com to see the films. I recommend episode 2. It's worth every single minute. It shows how we went from the TLM with its glorious sacred music and clear liturgical worship of Almighty God in a Holy Sacrifice to the My Little Pony Mass.

  1. I played this the "My Little Pony" Mass yesterday on the organ, helping out at a nearby church. Not quite my cup of tea. But there I experienced kindness and gratitude, the lack of which was the cause of my leaving a local Traditional Latin Mass years ago. The Pony parish showed bad taste in music selection. But the Trad. parish left me so far with a long-lasting bad taste.

  2. I'm so sorry you experienced that, P. O'Brien. Our little chapel is very kind. New people are always welcomed with open arms. The Novus Ordo parish we still attend for daily Mass is also a kind and welcoming place. I don't know anyone among my traditional friends who look down on those who attend the N.O. We are all members of the family. Our pastor at the chapel warns against a self-righteous attitude and a "rigid orthodoxy." As St. Francis de Sales always said, "You catch more flies with a spoonful of honey than a barrel full of vinegar."

  3. Mary Ann,

Your link to Latin Mass dot com takes you to a 'We can't find that page'. You can access the video from the main page of the site, however.

  5. First off, I found this great great comparison between the Novus Ordo and traditional mass. http://catholicapologetics.info/modernproblems/newmass/comparison.htm

On P.O. Obrien comment yes it is unfortunate he/she apparently ran into some bad apples. St. Marys where I go is much the same as your church Mary Ann. An overall friendly group. I think though one mistake many Novus ordo make is expecting the same atmosphere inside a Traditional Catholic church as they do in the Novus Ordo. Trads come to mass to connect with God, not so much your neighbor so the church is quiet people are quiet and reflecting so I can see where they would appear to be not at all friendly but this is time set aside for God, to plug in as fully as we can and deal with our neighbors the rest of the week. No question Novus ordo has a much more "festive" atmosphere. Like your church Mary Ann after mass is a different story, time for socializing over coffee and doughnuts. I think P.O. should shop around and see what opportunities could be had in finding the right church. There are so many trad groups out there its hard to keep score, SSPX, Ecclesia Dei, Sedevacanists, Thuc ordained, independents, SSPX resistance, etc. Depending on where you go I can see how a bad taste can develop.

  6. I'm an old guy, and I would still recommend the Trad. parish I had trouble with to anybody else except me! I have learned in the last twenty-five years or so, if you volunteer for the Church, expect to suffer a little. If you are paid, at least there is a quid pro quo. But if you volunteer, you are giving your heart. And when they break your heart, all the love leaks out. My trouble, by the way, was with leadership and not rank-and-file. But there is an Eastern Rite parish a half mile away from my home, so in a way all is even better now than it was with the Trad. parish. God is kind.

  7. Ah P Obrien now I understand your problem. You volunteered your time and effort and no one appreciated it they just pontificated what they wanted or how you were doing it wrong. Very rude to say the least. I kind of had similar experience. On my web site I make a traditonal Catholic calendar every year. This year I made a pre 1950 one. I do it myself with no help and post to my website for free download. The majority of people like it and compliment me but that is that small segment that loves to criticize every little thing. My initial reaction is "go do it yourself than". Then I realize you can encounter thru the day some of the nicest people, real saints but its always that one sourpuss sitting next to you on the bus you wind up taking home with you in your mind who destroys the day. Don' let that sourpuss destroy you good work P Obrien. Give them the attention they deserve. None.
