Editor's Note: My friend Dexter Duggan has a great column on Substack called Sunrise Sunset. He writes from Phonenix, AZ so his observations of the border crisis are particularly poignant, on target, and often heartbreaking. My own diocese recently celebrated in The Herald the resettling of 1200 illegals. I just shook my head. The same bishops who would tell us we were committing a sin by cheating on our outrageous and exorbitant income taxes are perfectly fine with illegals invading our country, stealing from the taxpayers, and overwhelming our schools and hospitals. Oh, and then there is the immoral cooperation with the drug cartels and coyotes who are flooding our cities with fentanyl, killing our children, and raping young women and hanging their panties on the rape trees which are common along the immigrant routes. (But not to worry, they would likely say since it's "remote" cooperation.) Thanks, Bishop Burbidge.
I met one of these young women when I worked at a pregnancy center in Manassas. She refused our help, so I'm afraid she had an abortion. How many other women raped along the route killed their children enabled by Catholic Church "resettlement programs." Since 2012, the U.S. Church has received $1.6 BILLION in grants from the feds. That is money extorted from the taxpayers. Catholic Charities is not a charity in the normal sense because most of their income is derived through robbery. At any rate...enough from me. Read Dexter's excellent column and I urge you to join his followers by subscribing on Substack.
A sea of Arizona sand is fine for illegal immigrants, but not a millionaire island off Massachusetts.
PHOENIX — I once spent a night in a motel in Gila Bend, Ariz., while covering a story about a mysterious death as a part-time writer for Time magazine. I arrived in the late afternoon from Phoenix without a reservation, so I had to take what I got, which was a room with some roaches on the walls.
Although my longtime home of Phoenix is hardly more than an hour’s drive northeast of Gila Bend, I don’t recall spending another night there, before or since. Just didn’t have a reason to.
Decades later, Gila Bend was in the news in the summer of 2021 when, under the new administration of Joe Biden, the Border Patrol simply began dropping illegal immigrants off there for the little desert town to take care of, although it didn’t have the resources.
The Border Patrol was very obedient at following the orders of Biden, who broke the law every time he induced illegal immigrants into the U.S., which was every single day.
Gila Bend is about 81 miles north of the international line with Mexico by driving along Arizona 85 to the border town of Lukeville, Ariz.
I’ve never spent a night on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., or even set foot there. The closest I got was on a few brief trips to Boston. The Vineyard is nearly 2,700 miles northeast of Phoenix.
From what I hear, there probably aren’t any roaches — or at least they don’t live long — on the walls on that island of Democrat-voting millionaires and billionaires, which loves illegal immigrants and considers itself a sanctuary for them, as long as they don’t show up to take advantage of this proffered benevolence.
That’s like being offered endless meals at the tony brunch, as long as you don’t try to put any food on your plate. Nor even a sip of mimosa.
Being a sanctuary for those you turn away doesn’t compute. Being a left-wing Democrat is more about policies than principles anyway. You know what you want, so whatever gets you there is what works. What works is then described as principles.
The Vineyard didn’t denounce the immigrants for having entered the U.S. illegally; “principles” dictated there was nothing wrong with doing that. But why didn’t they stay down in Gila Bend, or Phoenix, where, apparently, God wants them to be?
No Martha's Vineyard sunsets for illegals, just armed military deporting them. |
When conservative Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, of Florida, helped the illegal immigrants along their way by flying a few dozen of them to the Vineyard in mid-September, you might have thought, because of the furious denunciations fired off against him, that DeSantis had opened the gates of hell. (Hell, by the way, is a place that’s too terrible to exist according to left-wing thinking, except when lefties need to consign conservatives to it.)
Biden himself began flying illegal immigrants around the U.S. in 2021 after taking power as president, even right into the New York metropolitan area under cover of darkness, although liberal Democrat New York Mayor Eric Adams was among those denouncing flights when done by Republican officials.
“Principles” were at work here, when the same act was either demonic or angelic, depending on which political party performed it.
Was it true that Biden was putting many of the illegal immigrants into Republican-voting areas, in hopes of diluting or overturning conservative results?
Dylan Fernandes, a Massachusetts Democrat state representative whose district includes Martha’s Vineyard, tweeted furiously, “We are requesting that the Department of Justice open an investigation to hold DeSantis & others accountable for these inhumane acts. Not only is it morally criminal, there are legal implications around fraud, kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, and human trafficking.”
It was the same sort of fevered reaction provided by many others on that distant side of the political aisle including liberal Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who welcomes illegal immigrants into the formerly Golden State and delivers tax-paid benefits to them.
On September 19 Phoenix radio talk host James T. Harris (KFYI, 550 AM) told his audience that while he made a flight from Phoenix to his old hometown of Milwaukee on September 16, he had talked with two young male “migrants” from Punjab, India, who wore U.S. government wristbands allowing them to fly wherever they wanted around this nation.
Harris said that upon arrival in Milwaukee, he saw these two meet up with other young males. To what end? The talk host reflected on people throughout the world being brought here because Biden says so.
On September 16 conservative Arizona Republican U.S. senatorial candidate Blake Masters told Phoenix radio host Seth Leibsohn (KKNT, 960 AM) that he had just been down in Yuma and saw ID cards from around the world scattered by the border wall.
Yuma is in the southwestern corner of the Grand Canyon State.
Leibsohn replied that he used to see illegal entrants running across the border, to avoid the Border Patrol, but now he sees them just walk across.
This might surprise Biden’s press prevaricator Karine Jean-Pierre, off in the distant White House, who recently insisted that illegal immigrants aren’t walking across the international line.
Conservative Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake in Arizona said she understood what DeSantis was doing, but if the task were left to her, she’d send the illegal immigrants back out of the U.S. rather than bring them in deeper.
Illustrating the sheer injustice of Biden’s open borders, Lake told Sean Hannity’s national radio program on September 19 that at a recent Latinos for Lake rally, a weeping woman told her that she had waited for nine years before she could come to the U.S. legally from Bolivia.
Syndicated columnist Rich Lowry noted in the New York Post on September 19 that Texas and Arizona would have less reason to bus illegal immigrants to Democrat strongholds if these border states weren’t being overwhelmed by the numbers.
Lowry wrote: “If the border states are treating migrants as ‘pawns,’ give them fewer pieces on the board. If they are engaged in unworthy ‘stunts,’ remove the incentive to make theatrical gestures in the first place. Reduce the temperature by controlling the problem at the source.
“The truth of the matter,” Lowry said, “is that prior to Texas and Arizona undertaking their programs — and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis adding his attention-grabbing flights to Martha’s Vineyard — illegal immigrants were already getting moved around the country, with the assent of the Department of Homeland Security. The federal government gives migrants permission to travel within the country, and private organizations get them on buses to go to their preferred destinations.”
The Arizona Republican Party posted an item on the consequences of open-borders Democrats at the “Republican Briefs” blog for September 19. This blog isn’t run by the GOP but provides an extensive daily update of Arizona political news.
The item said in part: “Crime in Phoenix has increased nearly 50 percent since former Vice President Joe Biden took office. Tucson is one of the deadliest places to live in America. On top of that, we are experiencing the worst border crisis in our nation’s history. While nearly 6,000 people cross our southern border illegally each day, 80,000 young Americans have died of overdoses from drugs coming up through the border.
“While more and more of these alarming numbers make headlines, Arizonans should take notice of the alarming amount of Democratic candidates committed to opposing law enforcement,” the GOP item said. “The rise in Democrats who support defunding the police is truly disturbing — we are actively watching them choose leftist pandering over the safety of Arizonans. Their actions speak for themselves.
“Arizona Democratic Party Chair Raquel Teran called for defunding the police in a local TV interview earlier this year,” the item continued. “The Arizona Democratic Party hired a new staffer to help with the governor’s election who has advocated defunding police and evoked a cop-killing terrorist in an official statement. Candidate for Attorney General Kris Mayes hired a staffer who denounced police as ‘racist’ stormtroopers hell-bent on killing black people. Maricopa County Attorney candidate Julie Gunnigle promised to prosecute cops, not criminals, if elected. [Gubernatorial candidate] Katie Hobbs accepted three endorsements from organizations that support defunding the police. [Congressional candidate] Kirsten Engel signed an anti-cop pledge that called for defunding police, and the list goes on and on.”
Mark Krikorian, executive director of the pro-border-protection Center for Immigration Studies, suggested that it’s not simply a matter of Biden and his Democrat radicals hoping to bring in illegal aliens in order to get more votes.
Instead, Krikorian said in a column posted September 19 at the New York Post, the Dems think it’s simply wrong for wicked, racist America to keep out anyone who wants to be here.
But if America is such a wicked place, why do these other people want to come here and suffer under our alleged oppression?
And if Biden and his lock-steppers thought these unauthorized arrivals were likely to vote Republican, wouldn’t they be doing all they could to forbid their entry?
Tom Homan, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Donald Trump, posted an opinion article at the Fox News site on September 19 about DeSantis and Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott bringing illegal immigrants to liberal Democrats’ sanctuaries.
The article said in part: “The left’s furious, yet impotent, backlash to these moves has been a textbook example of hyperbole meant to inflame and divide rather than deal with a historic border crisis.”
Homan added later that “the radical open-borders crowd should look in the mirror before accusing patriots like DeSantis and Abbott. Because a careful reading of Title 8 of the U.S. Code, Section 1324, shows that if anyone is violating federal law when it comes to illegal immigration, it’s them.”
Even before Biden took control of the entire nation — if his cognitively impaired mind can be said to be in control — liberal Democrats had declared their own enclaves of sanctuary.
Homan said: “Sanctuary cities have been in operation across this country for years. Mayors in cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., have openly declared that not only will illegal aliens be protected from detention and deportation, but also receive taxpayer-funded benefits, including access to local schools, social-welfare programs and even driver’s licenses.”
He concluded: “The left’s open-borders policies are cruel and inhumane. They’re causing record numbers of migrant deaths and assaults. They’re enriching the cartels and human traffickers. They’re also an affront to law and order. Maybe the open-borders crowd should crack open the books before making any more ill-advised claims about law-breaking” by Republican officials.
How strange the turns of history and twists of fate.
Gila Bend tends to be a little hotter than Phoenix. Neither of them is on a navigable body of water. And neither of them had more than a small Native populations 200 years ago.
Today Gila Bend has fewer than 2,000 people, while Phoenix has more than 1,600,000 people within the city limits and nearly 5 million in the metropolitan area.
Why does history take such different turns even when the elements at hand to start with seem so similar? What might massive illegal immigration do to the entire nation? Will Gila Bend one day have nearly 5 million people?

Great articles, yours and Duggans. Your dislike for Bishop Burbidge is palpable. Are there any really good bishops? That used to be the adjective for your bishop. Do they all put on a smiling face for policies which are destructive? He lost any respect I had for him with his Latin Mass crushing actions. Does he care about the Faith and his flock? No.
ReplyDeleteActually, I like Bishop Burbidge. He's hard not to like. He's cheerful and gracious and friendly. I hate a lot of what he's doing, though. And I started to say, "He's kind," but sadly he's thrown several of his spiritual sons under the bus who are good men. And, of course, he's now treating some of his most faithful children as spiritual lepers. I write to him regularly. I hate to think of the number of miters that will likely be littering the floor of hell and I don't want his to be one of them.
ReplyDeleteAs for good bishops? Darn few. Even those who do good things seem to be cowardly. Would any of them be martyrs to protect the flock? Do we have a John Fisher among our bishops? I hope so, but am not confident.
I live in Denver, where our archbishop has allowed parish Traditional Masses to continue, I believe four of them. In addition, the FSSP parish here has about 1,500 in attendance every Sunday at several Masses. Archbishop Aquila here seems to be doing a fine job, but he will turn 75 in three years. If Francis or his ilk are still running the Church, we will be in for a whipping then.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your website articles because I have in-laws in the Arlington Diocese and several friends in the Christendom College region.
