I did not like the film about Mother Cabrini which missed the essence of her humble and obedient nature and her intense love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As portrayed in the movie, she seemed more in love with herself and her vision than with Christ.
Despite the saint's firmness when following God's will, she was a profoundly humble and obedient religious who treated others with respect. I particularly disliked the screaming scene in the movie where she insulted the fictional mayor's fictional assistant. What a slander against a holy woman who wished to model herself on Our Lady!
However, I'm glad I saw the film because it sent me to several biographies in my home library depicting the real Mother Cabrini rather than the zealous social worker version presented in the movie.
Today I came across a quote from a letter she sent to her spiritual daughters, a letter appropriate to our campaign season. I offer it for contemplation:
He who is faithful to God is faithful to his country and to his family, and the more the fear of God animates the citizens of a country, the greater and the more respected will the nation be. Moreover, as it is said that nations are formed on the knees of the mother, it follows that the more the mother is venerated in the family, and the more she herself conforms her conduct to that sublime model that we have in her, who, repairing the faults of Eve, raised the status of humanity, so much the greater will be those future generations who will form the glory and the prosperity of their country. These principles, my dear daughters, you should teach in your schools, because as educators, you must not only form good Christians, but good citizens for the State, which we wish to be great and respected.If we wish America "to be great and respected" we need to understand that all nations are called to recognize Christ as King. What do I mean by that? The values and principles of Christianity must permeate our nation and the nations of the world. "Viva Cristo Rey!" was Miguel Pro's message to the communist government of Mexico as he died with arms outstretched in the sign of the cross. Like him we must do everything we can to urge our leaders to respect the will of God in our civic life.
Christ never told His followers to overthrow Rome, an empire that we have come to resemble at its worst, but to seek the Kingdom of God and its righteousness. That kingdom is among you, He told His followers. He remains among us. Should we not do all we can to reveal Him in every law and initiative passed for the good of our citizens?
Today, those who talk about Christ the King are slandered as bigots, anti-Semites, etc. ad nauseum. Just look at the recent demonization of Candace Owens who refuses to be cowed by her detractors. We can't let calumny, slander, and detraction deter us from promulgating the truth. Christ must be King beginning in our hearts and in our homes. That's our first mission.
Have you enthroned Christ in your home? Would a stranger coming into your house recognize that you are a follower of the Lord Jesus? We can never be afraid to acknowledge Jesus as our Lord and Savior! If we deny Him without repenting of it like Peter, He will deny us on Judgment Day. Even worse, if one claim to be a follower, but blaspheme God by claiming his authority for the murder and mutilation of babies and children, there is little hope for salvation. It is sad to see those who are elderly and nearing the finish line, so intransigent in their hatred for God.
Remember Nancy, Joe, and all you other politicos blaspheming God, "Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven." [Matt 7:21]
During this Easter season, let us pray for the coming of the Kingdom on Earth that "God's will be done."
May Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, reign in our hearts.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.
