Cardinal Arinze on Altar Girls

When I travel, one of the things I find disturbing are the Masses with altar girls. Most of the parishes in my diocese don't use altar girls. And it's always a source of distraction to me. One of the things that makes me long for home. Bishop Keating who refused to change the policy called the altar boys his "farm team." Since girls can't be priests why initiate a false sense that they will one day be able to be?

  1. I hope that the use of female "altar boys" is one of the liturgical abuses that the Holy Father will correct.

  2. as the instructor for Alter servers I am constrained to use girls, I do not seek out girls but if they volunteer I have no choice but to teach them. I have found that they are very faithful and more pious.

I will ask the boys to be servers, and I pray someday that I will have only boys. The Bishop in Richmond VA says that I must allow the girls and so I do.
