In the Thick of the Battle

I've almost finished reading the Aug/Sept issue of Catholic World Report. There's an interesting article about new film, Cristiada, being made about Mexico's war against the Church back in the 1920s. Most Catholics have heard of Fr. Miguel Pro, one of its victims, but how many really understand what was going on when an atheistic dictatorship launched an all-out war against Catholicism and killed thousands of priests and religious and Catholic laity.

Coincidentally, I've been reading about the war against the faith in 16th and 17th century England and I recently picked up another book about the Spanish Civil War which also saw thousands of clergy murdered for the faith.

So many wars throughout history have been anti-Christian or specifically anti-Catholic. I think that's why the Lord of the Rings is so powerful. The battle is always the same: good vs. evil, the dark attempting to overcome the light, hatred vs. Christ's command to love, the struggle not to be seduced by "the precious" creatures of the world.

I'm so glad to be Catholic. It makes puzzling it all out so much easier that it would otherwise be. Life is hard, but the faith is a lamp unto our feet. It may only light up our next step, but we are never left alone in the darkness even when the lights are going out all around us.

I can totally relate to that quote from personal experience. There's a really animated debate that I thought would be of interest on evolution vs. intelligent design going on at http://www.intelligentdesignfacts.com
