It is Spring 2016. One hundred years ago during this season in Portugal (the children could never pinpoint the date)  an angel visited three little shepherd children and urged them to pray. He taught them an act of reparation:

MY GOD, I believe, I adore, I trust, and I love Thee!

The angel, and later Our Blessed Mother, urged the children to sacrifice themselves for sinners and to pray the rosary every day.

With nothing to celebrate about the document, the ladies nevertheless rejoice in their Catholic faith and the fact that they know Christ will never abandon His Church. Tuptim declares with enthusiasm, "That's a wrap!...Finally!" They make plans to meet later at Papa Benedetto's Italian Restaurant to enjoy the prix fixe dinner as a reward for successfully navigating the murky waters of the exhortation without losing the faith. Like special agents completing a mission, they want to debrief and consider their next step. And so, at 6:00 p.m. they arrive for their reservation where the hostess shows them to a corner table. They choose their selections off the menu and order glasses of wine with an order of calamari. When the wine arrives, Topsy proposes a toast.

Biking the Gettysburg Battlefield Reflecting on Choice

Larry and I spent the weekend in Gettysburg square dancing with our camping club. We never have much time on these weekends to see the sights so we stayed an extra day. This morning we biked the battlefield. As I rode around examining the monuments and reading the historical markers I thought of choice. The Kansas-Nebraska Act signed in 1854 was all about choice. Western territories had the "freedom to choose" by popular vote whether to be slave or free. In other words, Kansas-Nebraska, like Roe v. Wade was "pro-choice." Of course, Kansas Nebraska was passed by the Congress and Roe was imposed by the Supreme Court, but both sanctified the notion of the freedom to choose.

Sunday Meditation: Will Parents Being Non-Judgmental Lead their Children to Hell?

I was reading Fr. Jerry Pokorsky's article at The Catholic Thing this morning about non-judgmental clergy, a real indictment against priests who refuse to be shepherds warning their sheep. Instead, they let them run headlong into spiritual danger. But the paragraphs that really struck me had to do with parents:

Someone recently told me about a Catholic religion teacher who was called by a concerned parent. The teacher was presenting the Catholic faith in a methodical fashion. An upcoming topic was to be love and marriage. The parent wanted assurances that his young daughter would not be taught that the lesbian lifestyle of her older sister is immoral. 

If the younger sister came home with a crisp understanding of Christian marriage, she would become hopelessly “judgmental” – a truly horrible person – at least in Dad’s judgment. And she might even find herself denied entry to one or more colleges on the basis of her “intolerance.” You see, believing and living the Catholic faith is “judgmental” and it ruins education – and careers.

Reflections on “Amoris Laetitia” by Fr. Gerald Murray

Pope Francis' "pastoral" approach flies in the face of Church teaching. And the fact that the world loves him is more than troubling; it's alarming. Here are several paragraphs from Fr. Murray's long reflections. Keep in mind that he is a canon lawyer. He knows what he's talking about:

The publication of Amoris Laetitia brought an end to this discipline. [Denying Communion to the divorced and invalidly remarried] Now, the Church’s help and accompaniment of people publicly known to be living in “an objective state of sin” [305] has changed, as set forth in footnote 351 (and somewhat obscurely in footnote 336): “In certain cases, this can include the help of the sacraments.” The footnote refers to two statements Pope Francis made previously encouraging pastors to act with mildness and wide latitude when administering the sacraments of penance and the Holy Eucharist.

I can't say I was especially surprised by the revelation that Michael Voris' past sins involved living an active homosexual lifestyle. He's candid about being a terrible sinner before he reverted to the faith, and that, had he died during that period of his life, he would have spent eternity in hell. He's also expressed great love and appreciation for his mother and her willingness, like Our Blessed Mother, to suffer anything to rescue her sinful children. Like Mary, Michael's mom was willing to experience her own personal crucifixion for the salvation of one specific beloved sinner.

In one sense, this revelation is just. Michael dishes it out and those who hate him, his "tone", and his targeting of higher-ups in the Church are probably chortling. They obviously want to discredit him as a liar and hypocrite. But this doesn't do it. I myself have many sins of my youth. Like Michael, I repented and perhaps those sins made me "love much" more than I would have if I'd never strayed from God's laws.

Every day when we say the Morning Offering we pray "for the reunion of all Christians." I thought of that when I received this comment from my friend, Fr. Tom Collins, today.

It is no wonder the Orthodox are not too eager about reuniting with the Roman Catholic Church.considering the fact that the pastoral theology of the Western Church is so badly infected with a number of secularly transmitted diseases such as moral relativism, Darwinian evolution, and the capitulation to sexual perversion as “respect for freedom of conscience”, what good pastor would want to risk infecting his flock with such highly contagious diseases? He is calling for communities to develop initiatives that really meet the needs of engaged and married couples where they are. (Enthuses breathlessly) This document changes everything, opening the door to a Church that finally cares about all people.

In order to work off their frustration, Topsy and Tuptim meet at the track after their Amoris Laetitia class with Fr. Jimmy and Sr. Joanie. They bring water to drink while walking and also a thermos of coffee to share while sitting in the bleachers (they like to sit at the very top) after their exercise. At the top of the bleachers they are free to discuss Chapter Five where no one can overhear them.

Tuptim: Whew! That was great! (Pouring coffee in styrofoam cups and offering one to Topsy)

Topsy: (Taking it and frowning.) No cream?

Tuptim: Oh, don't be a whiner....(Laughs and throws a napkin at her) I needed that workout after listening to Sr. Joanie earlier. She's upset that the Pope continually referred to "mother and father", "maternal and paternal" and "male and female" instead of also including two parents of the same sex.

At one time or another we have all looked at a logo and wondered what its meaning is or what hidden subliminal message might be entering our subconscious to spur us into buying whatever the company has to sell

When looking at the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) logo for their Relay for Life what first comes to mind? What message does it convey and what strikes us at first glance?

The ACS says that their Relay for Life symbol is a “simple logo in the shape of a crescent moon and the rays of the sun, accentuated by a single star to the left of it”. When seen in neighborhoods, storefronts, college campuses and corporate buildings in the 24 countries which support this effort it will remind all who see it of the “day and night battle for survival many men, women and children face on a daily (and nightly) basis.”

I totally agree with Fr. Murray in the video below. He's a canon lawyer and is concerned about the language and the "excuse cards" that give people a free pass to sin. And that is the implication of Amoris Laetitia. Those people making excuses need their consciences stirred up because their very salvation may be at stake:

Metaphors for Life: The Boston Marathon

Our daughter, fourth of five children, is running the Boston Marathon today for the second time. She had to overcome a number of injuries and challenges to be there today. As I was praying for her this morning it occurred to me that the marathon is a metaphor for life in the Church these days. Many of us keep running the race according to the rules (orthodoxy), while the judges and race administrators play fast and loose and let interlopers join in despite lacking the proper certification and failing to meet the qualifications.

At the same time, those false judges berate the registered runners for their rigidity and lack of mercy toward the cheaters who are unprepared and likely to suffer serious injuries.

Well...life is, indeed, a marathon not a sprint. And no matter what the false judges do we persevere in the race following the rules of the Supreme Judge who will make the final decision and will separate the legitimate runners from those who winked and strutted and made deals with the false judges so they could pretend to be serious runners. We would happily welcome them to the training ranks if they wished, but they are too busy looking for loopholes and shortcuts to listen.

Topsy and Tuptim are back at the coffee shop sharing a cheese Danish and drinking their favorite javas. Chapter four is the focus of today's meeting and they both have their highlighted copies in front of them.

Topsy: I was really excited to read Chapter four. 1 Corinthians 13 is one of my favorite Scripture passages. In fact, my husband and I chose it as the second reading at our wedding. (Laughing)...Not very original; lots of couples do. As I read through the different paragraphs: love is patient, love is kind...I was touched and convicted by some of the reflections. Like the one on "love is not irritable or resentful." Listen (She reads)..."It refers to a violent reaction within, a hidden irritation that sets us on edge where others are concerned, as if they were troublesome or threatening and thus to be avoided." Ouch! That pinched.

Some maintain that nothing has changed with respect to the discipline that governs the access to the Sacraments for the divorced and remarried, and that the law and the pastoral practice and obviously the doctrine remains the same; others maintain instead that much has changed and that there are many new openings and possibilities. The question is for one person, a Catholic, that wants to know: Are there new concrete possibilities, that did not exist before the publication of the Exhortation or not.

I just finished reading Henry V and we went to Blackfriars Theater last night to see the play. Ouch...not a particularly good production. They turned many of the scenes into light comedy.

One that was particularly inappropriate was the tennis ball scene. The Dauphin, prince of France, insults Henry who led a loose and playful life before ascending the throne by sending him, via his messenger, a casket of tennis balls. Henry, who is about to invade France, responds calmly but you can see the rage roiling beneath his self control. Kenneth Brannagh is perfect in his understated anger as the young king. I highly recommend that film although the battle scenes are very graphic and bloody,

For all those couples out there, this is for you....
"Love is a many-splendored thing."

Tuptim and Topsy realize that their schedules don't allow time after class for a visit to the coffee shop or library to go over Chapter Three. Instead they decide to study the chapter intensively beforehand thinking of questions for Fr. Jimmy and Sr. Joanie within the small sharing groups.

They walk into the church basement, take seats in their group circles and get out their notebooks. They're a bit late, though, and Fr. Jimmy and Sr. Joanie are just finishing their long opening prayer invoking the Spirit to come upon them as leaders to enlighten their students, guiding them to the fruits of Amoris Laetitia.

Tuptim, looking over at Topsy mouths..."Here we go!" Topsy gives a slight nod, and rolls her eyes in anticipation of not being able to do so in a few minutes when everyone is looking.

Maybe Tony was the reason disgusting homosexual propaganda films like Brokeback Mountain got such glowing reviews.

Are You Unhappy? Take a Lesson from the Bees.

I just came in from the bee yard which is just across the field from our front door. Sometimes I go out and just sit and watch the bees flying in and out to see what they're doing. The past few weeks they've been carrying in lots of pollen to feed the brood. The colonies are increasing giving us great hope for an abundant season flowing with honey.

The birds and beasts and insects all do exactly what God wants -- no rebellion in their midst. They just do it! That's what I love about nature. We, on the other hand, have the natural law ingrained within us, but have the free will to rebel against it -- to our own sorrow. And I sometimes wonder if the extremes of nature, the natural disasters, floods, tsunamis, etc. aren't a reflection of OUR REBELLION. Perhaps our sins give Satan the power to use nature against us.

Topsy and Tuptim left the study group and decided to go to the library to exchange comments. They set up camp in a meeting room where they can eat lunch. From her bag Topsy pulls out two bologna sandwiches, a thermos of coffee, two mugs and napkins. She sets the table for a working lunch. They both spread out their highlighted copies of Chapter Two of Amoris Laetitia. 

Topsy: Fr. Jimmy was sure in rare form this morning in his intro. One more gushing adjective and I would have run to the bathroom, especially when he said the pope is calling us all to get away from "rigid orthodoxy" to become more "open, expansive and inclusive with equality and justice for all." Sounds like the pope is Superman! And what do all those adjectives mean anyway?

Tuptim: Sr. Joanie was even worse in our small group. She said the doc didn't go far enough, She loves that it shows unconditional love (mimics Sr. Joanie) "for the amazing diversity of God's people, but it really falls short in offering positive change for gays and women. (raising her arm like the Statue of Liberty) The Church is not a list of rules; it's the people." (In her normal voice) Good grief, she went on and on about the Church discriminating against gays and women. You'd think every parish had a gallows.

Pleased to present the Catechism of Pastoral Practice

The study group is meeting in the basement of St. Athanasias Church. Fr. Jimmy and Sr. Joanie [Chittister] are leading the sessions. There are sixteen participants and Fr. Jimmy and Sr. Joanie split the group in half so each leads a small group discussion. In the introductory session, Fr. Jimmy explained that they will study one chapter at each meeting. The initial meeting was get-acquainted time and set the boundaries. 

Fr. Jimmy told the group that there are no wrong answers and everyone's input is welcome. Nobody has a corner on the truth and everybody's opinion is equal. Topsy and Tuptim gave each other a look when he said that, but resisted eye-rolling. Topsy is in Fr. Jimmy's group and Tuptim is in Sr. Joanie's.

But, as the author says, the dissenter rejoices, he himself is in mourning. Me too and other faithful Catholics I know. So much of the apostolic exhortation is beautiful, but like a beautiful dinner that's been poisoned, it will sicken the flock, not nourish it.

I completely agree with James Carroll, the dissenter, that the pope has just brought the practice of pastoral dissent out of the shadows. Those of us who survived the sixties all knew about the dissent to Humanae Vitae: in the confessional, through the conspiracy of silence in the pulpit, through the failure to teach.

For those of us who lived those days it's deja vu. Read the article. It puts things in sad perspective. Keep the faith no matter what those around you are doing. Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, pray for us.

Is Islam a religion of peace?

In July, 2014, ISIS Sunni Muslims posted pictures on Twitter of themselves holding up decapitated heads with additional human heads impaled on a fencepost behind them. There were buckets filled with more heads and additional heads of young men lying on the ground. These victims of Islam’s peace were once someone’s beloved son, husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend just a few moments before the photos were posted. Thousands more victims of the believers of this cheerless religion of anger and rage are gang raped, stoned to death, kidnapped, tortured, mutilated and beheaded, all in the name of Islam violently killing its way to world peace leaving carnage, death and destruction in its wake. The comatose world does nothing except make excuses for this wicked evil because the politically correct name for these religious actions is peace.

Topsy: Hmmm…I wonder what kind of coffee Pope Francis orders when he’s wandering around Rome on foot and stops by Starbucks to pay out of his own pocket? And Obama too. That would be interesting.

Tuptim: Well, whatever it is, they would be the same because Pope Francis and Obama are practically twins, aren’t they?

I'm concerned about what's happening in the health care field. I was involved in fighting for the lives of both Terri Schiavo and Hugh Finn, brain damaged individuals deliberately starved and dehydrated to death because their spouses wanted to be rid of them. In both cases, parents and siblings fought for their lives. In Hugh Finn's case even his mother-in-law resisted the evil her daughter was doing.

Sunday Meditation: Do You Love Me?

In today's gospel Jesus asks that question of Peter --- three times. Why three times? To make up for the triple betrayal on Good Friday. I was reflecting on Peter's betrayal this morning in the light (or the dark) of the pope's apostolic exhortation. I admit outright that I haven't read more than the first few pages yet, but people I respect have read it. And they are saying things that don't exactly bolster one's confidence in the outcome we'll see following the promulgation of this encyclopedic exhortation.

Even though girls are not allowed schooling in many parts of the Islamic world, Zari will help them dream of going to school, having a career and being a doctor. Read here

With her purple face (thankfully covered by a veil in some circumstances), and her brown hair streaked with blue, purple, orange and pink, Zari will be the picture-perfect model to get to the heart of the matter – empowering girls to overcome “entrenched traditional (Islamic) attitudes towards women’s education and careers” outside the home…driving a car...by herself.

The Post said (Picks it up and reads) he "stopped short of changing church laws, while strongly hinting that he wanted to." Wow!

Saturday Morning Trivia: Shakespeare and Sherlock

A few friends and I decided to start a book club to alternate between reading Shakespeare and Church documents. We just started, and our first selection is Henry V. For those not versed in Shakespeare, the play revolves around the main battle of the 100 year war between England and France, the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.  Henry, who lived a loose and lascivious life before mounting the throne, casts off his former self to become a serious monarch, one who intends to claim what he considers his right to French lands.

Last night (in the wee hours when I couldn't sleep), I read Act III which finds Henry and his retinue on the French coast laying siege to the city of Harfleur. This is the source of the famous speech that begins, "Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more." As I read Henry's exhortation to his troops I stopped short at the end when I read, "The game's afoot."

During the Easter season I like to read the Acts of the Apostles and the post Resurrection gospel passages. They are all about Christian witness, i.e., evangelization. Peter uses the word witness over and over after the Resurrection of Jesus. He tells the crowd on Pentecost Sunday about Christ saying, "This is the Jesus God has raised up, and we are his witnesses." (Acts 2:32) After curing the cripple at the Beautiful Gate of the temple Peter proclaims to the amazed crowd, "Why do you stare at us as if we had made this man walk by some power or holiness of our own? The God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Servant Jesus....

Dred Scott revisited: On March 6, 1857 the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision on slavery that helped to ignite the Civil War by escalating the debate.. Written by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, the Scott vs. Sanford decision declared that "a negro, whose ancestors were imported into [the U.S.], and sold as slaves" could not be an American citizen and so could not bring a lawsuit. Dred Scott was just a piece of property. He sued claiming that by taking him into free territory, his owner no longer had the right to keep him enslaved.

Islam is strictly and spiritually a Muhammadan faith, and as such, has no claim to Abraham as its spiritual founder, therefore is not an Abrahamic Faith. In addition, it is Islamic tradition that Muhammad descended from Abraham's son Ishmael, however, this also does not mean that the religion Muhammad founded is an Abrahamic Faith, for religion and faith are of the soul, spiritual and transcendent, and not transmittable by bloodline.

If we don't do it, "the Church is doomed." What are you doing, laity, to defend the faith? Note what Bishop Gracida says about mercy (beginning at minute 4:48). Mercy is not the essential attribute of God as the Kasperites say. "The essential attribute of God is love....We are in a crisis comparable to the Arian heresy." St. John says, "God is love, not God is mercy." Bishop Gracida calls the laity to rise up and say to our heretical shepherds, "NO! That is not true." If heresy is preached from the pulpit the laity should rise up and say, "NO!" Skipping the “no-touch time” – a period of several minutes which must elapse to ensure that death has occurred – a proposal by medical researchers in Holland READ HERE says that, “Instead of dying by lethal injection, people requesting euthanasia could be legitimately killed as their organs are stripped from them on the operating table during transplant surgery.” The researchers believe that doctors should be given the power to kill under these circumstances since it would “improve the quality of the transplanted organ.”

Why was this Pittsburgh news anchor fired? Because she spoke the truth about violent fatherless black youth and dared to post it on Facebook.
