Looking back, I ask what did Islam have to do with Old Orlando's Delaney Park Elementary School all those decades ago? Nothing! What did Islam have to do with my college education, living in Italy, all the horses I galloped at Hialeah Racetrack, my marriage, my divorce, my children, my LIFE?  Nothing! Nada. Niente. Zip.

During the agony in the U.K. over precious sick baby Charlie Gard, I kept thinking of the soup nazi on the TV comedy Seinfeld. Only the fight wasn't an on-going joke over a bowl of soup, but a real-life struggle over the life of a child and the parental rights of his mom and dad.

You can tell a lot about the philosophy of a person by the decisions he makes. There isn't much online about Nicholas Francis, the presiding high court judge who ruled over the Charlie Gard case. But he clearly has little regard for the Catholic teaching that parents are the primary decision makers over their children. Francis ruled in favor of the hospital's death wish every time the parents appeared in court.

You know when I make pancakes sometimes I put one on the pan before it's hot enough or, on the other hand, the pan is too hot. The pancake comes out very anemic-looking or burnt to a crisp. Sometimes I just set it aside as not quite good enough to serve guests. 

Is that what our children are now? Imperfect pancakes? The ones set aside for the dog or the trash? Just try again for the perfect pancake?

This reminded me of a friend years ago. She went to the hospital emergency room for what turned out to be type 2 diabetes. She thought she was pregnant at the time and, like many doctors today, the attending physician asked her if she wanted the pregnancy.

Editor's Note: It is good to know the history of any movement and, certainly, the devastation in the Church occurred following the Council and the sexual revolution precipitated by the pill. The death peddlars may have won a round in the U.K. with their soon-to-be elimination of little Charlie Gard. His death will be a victory for the law of self-fulfilling prophecies. Charlie's case was hopeless they said and they went about making sure their medical opinion was verified by his death. Had Charlie received the experimental treatment his parents wanted in JANUARY, the little boy might be improving and doing well today like so many other miracle babies. 

Well, there's a new round coming up with the case of Jahi McMath who was declared dead by a California coroner in 2013, but continues to live today. (Jahi McMath’s family wins backing for argument that she’s alive.) Jahi requires a ventilator to help her breathe, but she is very much alive. Can a dead body begin menstruating? Jahi did. Can a dead body grow and require hair cuts and nail clipping? Jahi does. Can a dead body respond to commands to move? Jahi moves and responds to commands by family members.

Doctors and judges aren't gods. Unfortunately, many of them are confused and think they are. And so they make decisions about the "quality" of life of patients and often devalue those that, in their godlike opinions, just don't measure up.

Charlie Gard has taught us a lot. He's taught us that many parents don't have the right to make medical decisions for their children any more. He's taught us that many doctors resemble Dr. Mengele more than Dr. Schweitzer and that radical judges and courts are modern "Big Brothers."

And he's taught us that the spirit of the Third Reich is alive and well in the U.K.

There's a saying about the missions -- "Some give by going and some go by giving." I thought about that when I read Fletcher's email below. In the early days of the formation of the East Coast Center for Bioethical Reform (CBR), Fletcher stopped by to visit us on his way through Woodstock. We've been supporters ever since.

When I read this article reporting on a 2000 U.N. paper describing the necessity of mass migration to the west to offset aging and declining populations, I wondered if it was fake news. So I did a search on the U.N. website and confirmed the existence of the report published in 2000 that did, indeed, promote the invasion as a "solution." Isn't this just what we'd expect from the Utopian planners who know what's good for all of us? The U.N. has spent years promoting the sexual revolution and the elimination of babies through abortion and contraception because of "overpopulation." Today is the 50th anniversary of the Land O' Lakes Conference.  Isn't Land O' Lakes a kind of butter? Not that Land O' Lakes although that's what I thought of when I first heard about the infamous event years ago.

No, the Land O' Lakes conference was organized by Holy Cross Father Theodore Hesburgh who was the president of Notre Dame University. It's purpose? To revamp the idea of a Catholic University and bring it into the "modern world."

Actually it was more about being accepted by the world and getting a hand in Uncle Sam's generous pockets. The way to do that was to separate the idea of Catholic education from Catholic authority which their statement did.

Catholics are called to treat all persons with charity and justice. That includes those who hate what we believe. It demands a conversion of heart. It demands patience, courage and humility. We need to shed any self-righteousness. But charity and justice can’t be separated from truth. For Christians, Scripture is the Word of God, the revelation of God’s truth – and there’s no way to soften or detour around the substance of Romans 1:18-32, or any of the other biblical calls to sexual integrity and virtuous conduct. Trying to do so demeans what Christians have always claimed to believe. It reduces us to useful tools of those who would smother the faith that so many other Christians have suffered, and are now suffering, to fully witness.

I used to sidewalk counsel at an abortion mill with a man whose style offended a lot of folks. He was
loud and could be abrasive. When he had the bullhorn, some of the folks on the prayer line got uneasy. "What will he say next?" He was especially hard on the men bringing the women to the abortion mill. I loved him! But, I admit, sometimes he even made me cringe.

You know what? He saved a lot of babies. God used him with his abrasive style to reach the hearts of some who were impervious to the velvet glove. I particularly remember the day we saved a little Muslim baby, the sixth child in her family. It was my abrasive friend who did the counseling when the couple pulled into the driveway.

I thought of him this morning while reading comments on the post I wrote yesterday about Catholic bloggers who condemn other bloggers for condemning.

The 24 Congressmen who voted to use OUR MONEY to fund transgender surgery in the military should all be sent packing including Virginia rep Barbara Comstock. They are faux conservatives. If they don't have the brains to know when a man is a man and a woman is a woman, they sure don't belong making decisions that impact our lives.

Not only that, but surgery does not solve the problems of these gender-confused folks. The suicide rate among the transgendered is 20% higher than the non-transgendered. Dr. Paul McHugh, former head of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, calls transgender feelings a disorder of assumption similar to that experienced by emaciated anorexics who consider themselves obese and literally starve themselves to death. On Grammar and The Abolition of Man

What is education doing
to our children?

I just finished reading C.S. Lewis' The Abolition of Man, and, it illustrates what I was saying in my last post -- words matter. Not only that, but the way words are put together, i.e., grammar, matters as well. The saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword." cuts two ways. The pen can be used to spread the truth and goodness as Dante does in The Divine Comedy or the pen can be used to spread the lie and evil like the works of Marx and Hitler.

Lewis' book is about education and how relativism leads to the "abolition of man" making him little more than a social experiment of his "conditioners." It begins with a discussion of an unnamed work Lewis calls the Green Book which is a "little book on English intended for 'boys and girls in the upper forms of schools.'" Lewis doesn't name the book or the authors because, "I do not want to pillory two modest practising (sic) school-masters who were doing the best they knew." At the same time he decries the evils he sees in the "actual tendency of their work."

He particularly emphasizes a "momentous" paragraph where the authors attribute statements of judgment to personal feelings when they write, "This confusion is continually present in language as we use it. We appear to be saying something very important about something: and actually we are only saying something about our own feelings."

Liars know it for sure. Remember when Bill Clinton played games with words. He "did not have sex with that woman." Of course, it all depends on your definition of sex. And then there's the definition of the word "is." Liars like to play with word meanings and that's what Robert Greving illustrates in his article. And no matter how many liars like Fr. James Martin try to dance on the head of a pin the words will still mean what they say -- whether it's truth or a lie.

The homosexual attraction is disordered. It is not "differently ordered" any more than a man's attraction to his dog or to using asphyxiation or BDSM to get it on. Call things what they are and don't play the word games so popular with the Left who never met an idea they couldn't warp and twist. Words have power. Let's make sure the words we use advance truth!

Sometimes I think we are living in a novel. Dickens' story of the French Revolution certainly applies to our age of "enlightened" evil that recognizes 50 or 60 alternative "genders" and promotes the murder of the vulnerable while championing the rights of trees and bugs. Calling our time the "age of foolishness" hardly encompasses the idiocy.

Really? Teenager Gets Belligerent with Police and Demands they Return Her Bong!

This story and the accompanying video (See below.) have troubling implications for the future. This kid, Logan Huysman, is 18 and a legal adult.  She obviously thinks she can do whatever she pleases without consequences. (Although perhaps she was high on drugs at the time.) Can you imagine our country in her hands? I hope she gets a few days in jail and a big dose of community service where she'll be exposed to people in need. I wonder if she's ever done a lick of work in her life. 

The bruises on her arms are no surprise considering she is apparently anemic (because of her drug use, perhaps?) and violently resisted the officers who were trying to get her under control. Be sure to read the police statement on the website. 

I give the officers credit. They were calm, professional, and simply persisted in asking for her cooperation.

Of the various heretical sects that have prowled the earth in these latter times in defiance of the One True Church, perhaps the most adamant and hypocritical has been the "Born-Again Christian" movement, a Protestant sect which perverts Christ's teaching that "a man must be born again" to be saved. (John 3:3)

In the Gospel, Jesus tells Nicodemus, "Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God." (John 3:5) This verse of scripture refers specifically to the sacrament of baptism in the Catholic Church. Jesus says we must be born again through baptism if we want to be saved. Note that the application of water is indispensable, without which there is no being born again.

The born-again sect detracts from baptism and the institutionalized Church. Its objective is to prevent man from being reborn into Christ, that is, to prevent his baptism into the Catholic Church. Accordingly, it instigates rebellion against the vows made at baptism that we remain allegiant to the Church of Rome.

When I mention "The Dark Side of the Moon" to most people younger than me they assume immediately I am referring to a rock band, but what I have in mind is far from entertainment of any kind.  It is the title of a book published in London in 1946, with a preface written by T.S. Eliot.  The real author was to have been Polish General Wladyslaw Sikorski, who died unexpectedly in a plane crash off the coast of Gibraltar on July 4, 1943.

Zinnia repeatedly teaches that penises are simply part of a woman’s body and for straight men to desire only biological women should be an outlier and marginal position.

One hundred years ago at Fatima, Our Blessed Mother warned of the seriousness of the sin of  Catholics, who refused or failed to participate with reverence, attention and devotion at Sunday Mass. The Third of the Ten Commandment directs us to keep holy the Lord’s Day. For those who are members of the Catholic Church, obedience to this requires, unless there is a serious reason preventing a person from joining in this worship, participation each week at Sunday Mass. Since God is the perfection of integrity, communion with Him and others through regular reverent worship of Him is essential for growing in integrity, both as individuals and as a community. Failure to worship Him gradually leads to spiritual malnutrition and the perversion of one’s soul, mind, body and relationships. Thus it is not surprising that the decline in regular Sunday worship in our nation has been paralleled by a concomitant disintegration of the moral fabric of our nation.

This simple observation is filled with profound wisdom, a wisdom that has been seriously eclipsed in the consciousness of many Catholics in the Western world. This eclipse has been manifested to me numerous times in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As appreciation of the importance of this sacrament in the spiritual life has been lost to many Catholics, even those who do regularly confess their sins often indicate a rather superficial understanding of the actual sanctifying dynamic of this sacrament.

I grew up in Beaumont, Texas and lived in a neighborhood full of kids who were told what we almost never hear anymore: "Get out of this house and GO PLAY!" Sometimes the mothers would get together for coffee at the kitchen table of one or the other's house and while some were closer than others, no doubt there was a fair amount of gossip among all of them that was bound to have occurred on any given day. When I was teaching fourth grade at St. Louis School in Alexandria, I had a student whose young aunt was dating the "ideal" man who came to Church with her and put on all the masks that made him look like he would be the ideal husband. I used to see them together in Church. She dated and married him. 

Within weeks of the marriage she was abused. They later separated and the marriage annulled, but what an ordeal for her and her family! 

I immediately thought of my student and her aunt when I read this article. Folks, teach your daughters and granddaughters to beware (and your sons too.) See how your boyfriend treats his parents, especially his mother.

Please join me in offering the rosary today for the repose of the soul of Cardinal Meisner. The pope learned of his death "with great sadness." Well...I'd like to think that's true. On the other hand, wasn't Cardinal Meisner one of the "rigid," inflexible pharisees, a hypocrite who cared too much about rules and lacked mercy? Pope Francis certainly didn't respect him (or the other cardinals of the Dubia) enough to respond to the Dubia or the April letter asking for a papal audience. For a pope who talks about transparency and openness, he is slow to act like he means it.
