• FINALLY -- The year from hell is coming to a close. Of course the new year will find Satan as active as ever, but perhaps our prayers, fasting, and almsgiving can bind him and release many of those enslaved in his service. I'm praying for that! My new years resolutions are 1. to pray a Memorare for that intention every day along with the Angelus three times a day, 2. to make little acts of sacrifice for that intention, and 3. to make almsgiving in the form of practical assistance and financial aid a weekly intentional activity.

In my experience, two subjects on Facebook bring out the big guns among Catholics: diocesan mandates about masking and Communion in the hand and the SSPX. Sad to say, the shooting begins almost immediately whenever these subjects come up.

I'm going to focus on the mask-on/mask-off controversy in this post with an analogy from Dr. Seuss and his story, The Sneetches. 

For those who've never read The Sneetches, there were two groups: the sneetches who had "bellies with stars" and the "plain-bellied sneetches with none upon thars." Best on the beaches were the star-bellied sneetches. They wouldn't play with the unstarred sneetches or invite them to their weenie roasts. In fact they treated the poor starless sneetches abominably. I won't ruin the story for you; but it's a great lesson in true tolerance and respect for differences and also a warning about the temptation to be social climbers and snobs who look down on your neighbors.

The joy of Christmas transitions to grief today over the death of the first martyr, the holy deacon St. Stephen. What wisdom! Holy Mother Church reminds us that we are in the Church Militant, not at the church picnic despite our Christmas day joy. Remember, at the birth of the holy babe, Herod sits on the throne and will soon see the news of a "newborn king" (brought unwittingly by the three wise men to this diabolical ruler) as a threat to his own rule. And so he plots believing that, in his worldly power, he can thwart the will of God. Stupid man!

Welcome the Light of the World! Merry Christmas from Les Femmes!

Still complaining about the "executioner" figure in the Vatican's current Nativity? Here's a bit of perspective on that. 

Note that in the lower right hand corner of this ancient Eastern icon of the Nativity is the Devil seen conversing with St Joseph. ("Oh, horrors! What is HE doing there?!! It's positively pagan!)

Well, I'll tell you what he's doing there as well as in the Vatican's Nativity and it isn't pagan at all.

NASA tells us that on December 21st a spectacular event will take place in the heavens. Jupiter and Saturn will align in "the great conjunction" to create the "Christmas Star" for the first time in almost 800 years. 

The last time the joint planets dazzled the world occurred during the Middle Ages on March 4, 1226. What a blessing to be gifted with this awesome sight, not in March, but in Advent on the cusp of Christmas! Coming at the end of such a challenging year, it offers a brilliant sign of hope.

Ever since I called Books-a-Million's (BAM) corporate offices years ago about pornography books (they said they were "art books") placed next to children's Valentine's Day books, I have been interested in "book placement" in BAM and other book stores. "In many big-box stores, publishers pay for good placement on front tables, end caps and window space in the same way General Mills and Procter & Gamble buy space for their breakfast cereals and detergents in supermarkets", says literary agent Andy Ross.

The Valentine's Day story goes as follows: I was perusing the children's Valentine's Day books on a table placed low enough so that children could pick up the books and look at them, when I looked at the table next to the children's table. All books on the second table, also low enough so that children could pick them up and thumb through looking at pictures, were pornography books of adults having sex. Being horrified at the possibility of a child looking at porn, I called the sales person over, then asked that the store manager join us. 

Pointing to the children's table next to the porn table I asked whose idea it was to place the two tables together. Was BAM promoting pornography to children? The answer was that they were adult Valentine's Day "art" books and "book placement comes from corporate" so there was nothing they could do.

This Year's Beautiful Vatican Nativity - I love it!

Everyone in the world can have their own opinion about what speaks to them or what does not. I am allowed to have my own opinion of things. I will not follow the crowd. Just because Fr Z , Ann Barnhardt and Taylor Marshall (who thinks the ANGEL is Mary!!) don't like the nativity, does not mean that I have to not like it too. (The pieces on either side of the angel are too far from the figure. They are the angel's wings but the effect of wings is lost since they are not placed close enough to the figure. See the photo below of the wings correctly placed.)

Because I like the Vatican's nativity am I less Catholic? A degenerate person? Bad to the bone? Shall we all cancel Grandma Moses because she wasn't a Renaissance painter? Toss Van Gogh's paintings out the window? Change Williamsburg's Folk Art Museum to a museum containing famous American painters whose work more resembles acceptable societal images than simple folk art? 

Maybe I just appreciate art (I was an art major for the first two years of university, one of those years in Venice, Italy at the Accademia) - all art, including modern art, folk art, ancient art, European art, Asian art, African art, and most of all, the beautiful artwork my children made when they were small, like the "Turtles with Cupcakes on Their Head" and the "Zebra Standing on an Anthill" which I framed.

My sister is in a nursing home in Frederick, MD, so I totally get what Eric Peters is talking about in his Letter to the Warden of the Prison for the Elderly. I've had only one outside visit with my sister since last March and even then we had to wear masks and stay six feet away from each other. No touching! A guard was stationed nearby to make sure we didn't break the prison rules.

There was already a spike before Thanksgiving, and it has slowed since: Nov. 10 - 17: +24% Nov. 17 - 24: +14% Nov. 24 - Dec. 1: +12% Dec. 1 - 8: +6% As you can see, the most recent week's figure is one-fourth as high as that for the week of November 10. If the numbers had been reversed, we'd have been lectured to nonstop: see what you stupid rubes did by traveling? Since the numbers once again do not correspond to what the cartoon version of the virus would lead us to expect, Team Apocalypse has simply moved on to something else, not chastened in the slightest. Meanwhile, check out this graph, showing the massive divergence in deaths by continent. Differences of that scale can hardly be attributed to policy differences between continents, much as the "listen to the science" crowd wants us to believe that wise government policy can navigate us through a spreading virus. I think the only explanation must be something like pre-existing immunity." She represents the hope, the expectation, the longing for a Messiah. It is Mary whose "yes" begins the fulfillment of God's promise to send a Redeemer. Mary waits while the Word Made Flesh dwells in the darkness of her womb. She prepares for his coming lovingly sewing His swaddling clothes. She longs for the day when the Son of God will be born like the sun rising in the East to bring light to the world. Mary, the Mother of God, is Advent's icon.
