Good question and good article. Somewhat chilling, however.

Indeed, even when speaking here to his own constituency – his fellow Successors of the Apostles – the Pope couldn’t bring himself to criticize the U.S. Supreme Court’s deplorable 5-4 decision of June 26th! All the Holy Father did was offer some very bland remarks of a more or less sociological nature. The Church, he said, cannot “disregard” the “unprecedented” social, cultural and juridical "changes" that are now having their “effects” (he doesn’t say bad effects) on “family bonds.” He added that since we Christians are not “immune” to social change, well, . . . we’ll just have to get used to this situation in which the sacramental and civil understandings of marriage are no longer as similar as they used to be. The only actual criticism the Pope voiced in this context was directed (yet again!) at social conservatives, not at the rising tide of homophile subversion, militancy and anti-Christian intolerance.

All along the pope has saved his harshest words for "me." I'm that "social conservative" who loves the Church, fights for the unborn and the vulnerable at any stage of life, urges people to reject contraception, encourages big families and home schooling, and debunks the unscientific knee bending at the altars of evolution and climate change.

So where are we going? Only time will tell, but Father's article is a sobering note. Pray for the Synod starting next Sunday and for all the bishops participating that the Holy Spirit will not be overshadowed by the spirit of the age which is decidedly unholy.

Only one Democrat voted for the bill -- Joe Manchin of West Virginia, my husband's home state. Good for him.

Eight Republicans voted against it: Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Dean Heller of Nevada, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Susan Collins of Maine. As far as I'm concerned, Rand Paul is off my list of presidential possibilities.

The Pope's Speech to Congress: What Are His Priorities?

A friend of mine wrote this on his Facebook page after the pope's speech to Congress this morning. 

"About 145 babies were aborted during this speech to congress. I'm not sure how many criminals were put to death during that time but I'm guessing it was quite a bit fewer. Just saying."

It got me thinking. How enlightening would it be to go through the speech with a pen and paper and timer and write down how much time was given to each subject? I only heard one sentence about defending life from beginning to end and very little on the family that couldn't be interpreted as applying to the new definition of family in all its diverse forms. There was a lot more, as my friend points out, on capital punishment and, of course, on social justice whatever you think that means.

When Pope John Paul II visited America in 1993 for World Youth Day, he spoke about life. He reminded us of his 1987 visit when he said:

Is anyone really surprised that Hillary Clinton supports killing babies any time before birth (and perhaps after). Hillary resembles all the tyrants of history who had no problem killing millions of BORN people for political expediency. The Clintons have shown themselves to be completely without honor or moral compunction. The rules don't apply to them because THEY are the special ones. Cheating on your spouse is no problem because the normal rules of conduct don't apply to you. Killing your political enemies is just being pragmatic. Get them before they get you. Besides, you're one of the enlightened ones, the leaders, who can't be expected to follow the rules of the peasants.

And that's the Clintons in spades. Bill and Hillary's child and grandchild are worth something (only because they weren't handicapped). But others have the value the Clinton's apply to them. How useful are they? Can they help you get ahead or will they hold you back and hinder your agenda. Hillary would change her position on a woman's right to choose in one second if it would help her political prospects.

Sometimes I think Hillary is Margaret Sanger reincarnated. She has the same cold, calculating nature as that diabolical mother of our modern, murderous civilization. So, while Hillary brags about communicating with Eleanor Roosevelt, her real soul mate is death peddling monster Margaret Sanger. I'm praying for both of them today, but I have to admit, I'm doing it with gritted teeth.

And yet, the Savior saw something the Pharisees and religious leaders did not. He called Matthew in the midst of his money counting. How many sinners are called in the midst of their sins? Will you be the hand of Jesus echoing His call to follow Him? Are you following Him yourself? How far behind are you? Run up closer so you can reach out and touch His cloak and be healed.

And pray for poor sinners. Have you ever considered going to an extra Mass on Sunday in atonement for those who stay home? Just think how the inestimable graces of one Mass can pour out on a parched heart. Imagine it swelling with love like a dry sponge swelling up with water. We can renew the face of the earth by our prayers and sacrifices. Let's do something today for all the Matthews in the world who are just waiting to be transformed by Christ.

Sunday Meditation: The Most Sublime Charity

I'm reading a short booklet titled The Spirituality of the Little Shepherds Francisco and Jacinta Marto by Fr. Louis Kondor SVD. This morning I read this powerful passage:

Besides the charity which goes out to meet the bodily necessities, there is that which seeks to repair the life of the soul. It is relatively easy to be moved by the necessities o the body. Even without faith, simply through philanthropic motives, well-doing can be pursued. 

But if we are moved by the lot of those who live in sin, of those who are in danger of losing their souls forever, that is the most sublime charity, the fruit of the gift of Understanding that penetrates into the mystery of sin. 

The light of God shone into the souls of these little children of Fatima, the gift of Understanding made them understand the danger of sin, and led them to embrace a heroic life of mortification, to deliver the sinners from falling into Hell.

Her respect for her tiny, very sick patients is so, so evident. Let us all have a heart for God's little ones whether they are sick babies in the womb or the vulnerable elderly becoming like little children in their old age. The sick babies Dr. Parravicini treats are precious in God's sight. The reason for their short lives is a mystery, she says, but they "show the beauty and the truth of God. A Few Clues to the October Synod

Funeral Today: Always a Good Time to Reflect on What's Really Important

This has been a summer of funerals. Today was our fourth in just a few short months. What was particularly memorable at today's funeral was one son's wonderful "memorial" to his father near the end of Mass. It wasn't the typical eulogy about all the great things Dad accomplished. He gave a very brief testimonial of how his Dad's faith and fidelity brought him back to the Church. He called himself a "prodigal son" but testified to his dad's never wavering in the faith. I couldn't help noticing at Communion that only about half the family went up to receive. Later I was talking to someone who said the mom told him her husband offered all his suffering that his children would return to the faith. I felt like that son's testimonial was a spark that might reignite the flame of faith in some of his relatives.

It can make you smarter: "cursive writing has been shown to improve left-right brain synergy and even promote the brain's language and memory functions."

Not only that, but it's beautiful. I like writing on a keyboard. I can probably think and write more quickly on my computer than on a legal pad. But I wouldn't even consider typing a thank you or sympathy note and every card I write (including the several hundred Christmas cards I send) gets a personal note. If your children aren't learning cursive in school teach them at home. One of Ghandi's big regrets (He describes it in his autobiography) was never developing beautiful handwriting.

Keep cursive alive. Send a letter or card with a note in cursive today (unless you are writing to a first or second grade student).

Have a Little Cake and Coffee at the Death Cafe

A friend sent me an email earlier today saying she'd seen a sign in a local coffee shop in Berryville advertising a "death cafe." Yes, you read that right. It's the latest thing. Get together over coffee and cake and talk about death. One promoter of these events says she's "passionate about death."

The founder of the Death Cafe, Bernard Crettaz, organized the first one in 2004. He wanted to remove what he described as the "tyrannical silence" around the topic of death. Crettaz also wanted to renew the pagan tradition of the "funeral feast" in which "the living would renew their bonds while letting go of what weighed on their hearts." The tradition of the funeral feast has some bizarre elements and in some cultures includes animal sacrifice and practices to prevent the spirit of the dead from haunting the living.

Watch this important video. It points out how important the upcoming synod is. Many mystics predicted the assault on the family and this synod, if it undermines the indissolubility of marriage, will be promoting heresy. Watch this and pray. Pray especially for the brave bishops of the Church who are not fleeing from the wolves but facing them down. Note the discussion of the manipulation of language -- "new pastoral care" to affirm homosexuality and Communion for those in invalid marriages is compared to the distortion of Vatican II by alluding to the "spirit of the council." Bishop Schneider calls them "false words" and specifically identifies the strategies of Cardinal Kasper as "a lie."

Debi Vinnedge of Children of God for Life, a vaccine watchdog groups, points out that those who want mandatory vaccination say no new abortions will be necessary since existing stem lines can be used. This research proves that's simply not true.

Check where your children's vaccines are coming from. There is evidence that vaccines produced from aborted babies are linked to autism, lymphoma, and leukemia. You cannot kill one person in order to help another.

Rereading The Hobbit and Reflecting on the Journeyi

The hero's journey is one of the major themes in literature. And as I've been rereading The Hobbit this week and seeing all the crises and difficulties Bilbo experiences, it made me think of my own journey. Many of Bilbo's adventures involve facing evil: evil trolls, goblins, Gollum (who made himself evil by his wicked choices), the wolves, and Smaug. He also experiences the help of friends who bring warmth and comfort to an otherwise dreary quest. And then there are the plodding times through the Mirkwood when all is dark and depressing, perhaps the worst evil of all -- the temptation to despair.

Isn't that a lot like life? We face evil and continuously have to fight it. The temptations to do wrong, the petty meanness so easy to fall into, the temptations to discouragement. "Just give up; it's too hard and who cares anyway?" That's when we need to look up and see the light and remember we are never alone and help is always close at hand.

What is your journey like today? Whatever it is, don't walk alone. Be aware of the spiritual twin walking with you, your guardian angel, who is so eager to help you. Look for ways that you can be a comfort to those around you. Somehow, in encouraging others, our own journey becomes easier. Have a blessed day. You are the hero on the most important journey of all -- life in Christ. Let us pray to be transformed so we can be a guide to others on the journey.

It has been almost five years since I wrote you about the effort of the federal government to impose EOL consultations on us through the use of a carrot and stick.

That alert apparently made its way to the desk of Robert Pear at the NY Times, their healthcare expert.  He was interested in LifeTree's investigative work and ran a story on Christmas Day titled "Obama Returns to End-of-Life Plan That Caused Stir."

On January 4, 2011, the Obama administration withdrew the EOL portion of the new regulation, just 10 days after the NY Times article.  The story had captured the news over the holidays. 

Since then the Big Death lobby, a.k.a. the Third Path Movement, has been patiently at work getting ready to come at this problem again!   

A "Notice and Comment Rulemaking" period is currently under way with a deadline of September 8, 2015, 5pm Eastern.  After that deadline next Tuesday, an important change in how medicine will be practiced will take place unless CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) receives serious negative comments from the general public.   

Here is what has happened.  Please continue to read.  This is important!!

Two new CPT Codes (Current Procedural Terminology Codes, registered trademard of the American Medical Association) can be used by healthcare professionals starting Jan 1, 2016 to record Advance Care Planning Services and apply for reimbursement from the federal government for these "services." 

These Advance Care Planning talks will record wishes pertaining to medical treatment and record them in an advance care document such as 1) healthcare proxy, 2) healthcare power of attorney, 3) living will and 4) POLST/MOST/POST/MOLST form.  (You know, the POLST form that become doctor's orders!)

These codes are 99497 for the first 30 minutes of advance care planning discussion and form completion with the patient by the physician or other qualified health professional, and 99498 for any additional minutes spent with the patient for that purpose. 

PLEASE, take a moment right now to tell the federal government that you oppose this regulatory change.  (See the list of suggested points which you could make, below)

Sunday Meditation: The Call to Be Missionaries to a Neo-Pagan Culture

One of my readers posted a comment on my last article linking to a wonderful blog with an amazing homily by the pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville, SC, Fr. Jay Scott Newman. (Thanks, Alan!) Father makes the point that, rather than bewailing the collapse of the culture, we should welcome it as an opportunity. An honest view of the culture makes it clear that it is more neo-pagan with a Christian veneer. But the "victory" of the sexual revolution exhibited by the recent enshrinement of same-sex "marriage" by the Supreme Court offers tremendous evangelical possibilities. Like the canaries in the coal mines who let miners know when the air was getting impossible to breathe, the jailing of Kim Davis for refusing to bend to a federal judge's demand indicates exactly where this is going. Like the poisoned air in the mine threatening the life of the miners, the cultural air is poisonous for Christians. They will not be tolerated when they stand up for the natural law or listen to the voice of the people. Kentucky voters rejected same-sex marriage in 2004, but liberal judges have been making law for years. Who cares what the voters want, the bigots in black robes will make the rules even when they overturn thousands of years of moral rule. So despite the fact that the state constitution of Kentucky says marriage is between a man and a woman, Davis must bow to the liberal tyrant judge. When she wouldn't, she was jailed for contempt. But the real contempt is on the part of the judge for the Judeo-Christian ethic.

What is the reality here? Kim Davis engaged in a courageous act of civil disobedience against a mad judiciary. Suppose you were a government employee who lived in Germany in 1939 and you received an order to arrest Jews and load them on cattle cars heading for concentration camps. Would you comply? Suppose you were a doctor ordered to carry out the euthanasia laws against the handicapped. Would you participate in gassing the innocent?

Homosexuals have framed the debate as one of civil rights equal to discrimination against blacks. It's a diabolical lie. Blacks suffered because of the color of their skin, a genetic trait. Homosexuals want special privileges based on their BEHAVIOR, i.e., same-sex sodomy.

But the fact is that "gays" don't really want marriage at all. In a recent article in The Nation, four authors outline an agenda that includes disestablishing marriage altogether. What they appear to want is for all things to be viewed through a "gay" lens: relationships, economic factors, health care, work, social issues -- all must be seen according to the LGBTQ vision. The authors promote the "progressive" left and call for crushing the right. No one may dissent from their viewpoint. Christians will bend to the beast or be fed to the lions.

Like I said, the treatment of Kim Davis is the canary in the mine. The Christians in this country will either join together to fight, or they will "hang" separately.

Sanger and her cronies did more to establish the culture of death in America than almost any other modern figure. She considered minorities, Jews, Catholics, the "feeble-minded," etc. as "human weeds," and she did whatever she could to help exterminate them. While publicly pretending to be against abortion, she actually gave women advice on how to bring their period if they missed it. Read her pamphlet on Family Limitation.  She gave an interview in 1947 calling for a moratorium on women having babies. Sanger was a selfish, power-mad narcissist. 

Help get her bust out of the Smithsonian. Media Research Center is urging citizens to call the Smithsonian and courteously demand the removal of the bust from the taxpayer funded museum. If they need a place to put it suggest the Holocaust Museum. She was a big fan of Adolf Hitler.
