The Benedictine monks of St. Joseph Abbey publish a wonderful monthly newsletter sharing the life of a saint or holy person. I highly recommend it for spiritual reading. They will send a three-month subscription for free but I hope you will support them. Sign up here.
You can have Masses said at the abbey and they also have a shop that offers beautiful icons and statues.
The monks also offer retreats for men based on the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius both in France and Ireland. I hope you enjoy browsing their website.
Vote your faith. And remember these words of St. Teresa of Avila:
Christ has no body now on earth but yours,
no hands but yours,
no feet but yours,
yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion is to look out to the earth,
yours are the feet by which He is to go about doing good
and yours are the hands by which He is to bless us now.
Before you get too impressed with President Obama's cost-cutting measures, watch this visualization and see what it really means. Still impressed? Meanwhile, the national debt keeps on growing...and growing...and growing...and....
You've no doubt seen the "Juicy" fashion line at your local department store. What do you think about a fashion look that focuses attention on little girls' behinds with the suggestive idea of them being "juicy" consumables. (Any pedophiles in the audience?)
Well, it isn't just fashions, it's suggestive moves and dances. Go to a recital of a big dance school with big buck, often immodest, costumes and you can see little girls straddling chairs, shaking it all up, and engaging in what can only be described as "dirty dancing."
Well, one little girl didn't like being told she had to "shake her booty" for the enjoyment of the crowd. (See below.) She paid a price for her modesty. Good for her and two thumbs down for the cheerleading coach who has the common sense of a lemming!
The American Family Association has a petition drive to support Fayleen for her courageous stand. Go here.
A friend who runs a restaurant had the video below posted on his Facebook page. It shows exactly how government regulation suppresses business. But it brings in more money for government!
BOOK REVIEW:
by Mary Ann Kreitzer, President
Les Femmes - The Women of Truth
Human nature is such that activities we repeat tend to become routine. The one who does something the first time with attention and diligence, is apt to do it casually and carelessly after dozens of repetitions. If the activity is trivial, casual performance doesn’t much matter; but when it has cosmic significance like the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, indifference and carelessness toward the sacred mysteries are tragic. Such slovenly participation at Mass is, unfortunately, common. And so I began Victor Claveau’s book On Holy Ground: Church and Mass Etiquette, with eager anticipation hoping to find a tool to encourage more respectful attention at Mass. I wasn’t disappointed.
This post can be easily summarized by this scene from the film, Brewster's Millions. Please excuse the rough language, but it is so fitting I just had to connect it to the post.
There's mounting evidence that the American people are fed up with business as usual on Capitol Hill. Rasmussen is reporting an interesting poll result today. Sixty-five percent (65%) of "likely voters" in their random poll said they would choose to throw out the entire Congress and start over. Here are the questions:
By Rasmussen Reports
1* Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the Democratic Party?
2* Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the Republican Party?
3* The following results are a combination of responses from questions 1 and 2.
4* Suppose you could vote this fall on whether to get rid of the entire Congress and start over again. Would you vote to keep the entire Congress or get rid of the entire Congress?
5* Do you consider yourself part of the Tea Party Movement? [those who answered "no" or "Not sure" were asked] Do you have any close friends or family members who are part of the Tea Party movement?
You can see the complete report here.
A couple of other interesting findings from the poll.
82% of Republicans and 78% of unaffiliateds say dump them all. Despite their party’s control of both the House and Senate, Democratic voters are fairly evenly divided: 44% say it’s better to keep the entire Congress, but 38% would prefer to give all the national legislators the heave-ho.
Among all voters, just three percent (3%) have a favorable opinion of both parties, while 18% view both unfavorably. Seventy-nine percent (79%) offer mixed reviews.
Twenty percent (20%) of voters nationwide now say they are members of the Tea Party, with another 10% who say they aren’t members but have friends or family members who are. Sixty-one percent (61%) say they have no ties to the grass roots movement. [This is a particularly interesting statistic since it takes about 20% of the population to foment a revolution. Which means that liberals are in big trouble if the tea partiers get really organized!]
Election Day is coming. Go out and vote - not Republican or Democrat, but pro-life! Support candidates who will defend the unborn child who has no voice but yours. And, above all, pray. Pray that the Lord blesses us with men and women after His own heart.
Archbishop, soon to be Cardinal, Raymond Burke speaks the truth. Will pro-abortion Catholic politicians listen? If they don't will they be denied Communion to prevent sacrilege? In many dioceses they will not only not be denied Communion, they will be given podium's in Catholic churches scandalizing the faithful and leading them into confusion and sin.
Here's a portion of his statement in the video below:
"You can never vote for someone who favors absolutely what's called the right to choice of a woman to destroy human life in her womb.... This is the most fundamental and critical area, the protection of innocent and defenseless human life. But you could never justify voting for a candidate who not only does not want to limit abortion, but thinks it should be available to everyone."
For God’s sake, why do you damnable sodomites pursue the heights of ecclesiastical dignity with such fiery ambition. - St. Peter Damian, 1049
The USCCB will hold its semi-annual meeting in a few weeks. One of the items on the agenda is the election of a new president. If things go as expected the vice president, Bishop Gerald Kicanis, will move up. And what a fitting appointment he is for the bishops' vile bureaucracy. One of Bishop Kicanis' claims to fame is his enabling of mega-sex abuser, defrocked and jailed priest, Daniel McCormack.
Kicanis was the rector of Mundelein Seminary in the 1990s when McCormack was a seminarian there and knew of three cases of "sexual improprieties," one involving a minor. Kicanis recommended McCormack's ordination anyway. His assessment even after McCormack's history of child sex abuse was, "It would have been grossly unfair not to have ordained him. There was a sense that his activity was part of the developmental process and that he had learned from the experience. I was more concerned about his drinking. We sent him to counseling for that." Sexual activity with a minor is part of the "developmental process?" Please!
So 23 youngsters (at least) were sexually abused and psychologically damaged because it was "unfair" to recognize McCormack's homosexual depravity for what it was and refuse him ordination. To see exactly how horrible McCormack's actions were go here and read what one father only recently learned about the homosexual rape of his young son over a three-year period. He can thank Bishop Kicanis for helping it happen.
How many "sexual improprieties" involving minors are necessary, Bishop Kicanis, to know someone shouldn't be ordained? Current USCCB head, Cardinal Francis George, was also involved in promoting and enabling McCormack. He kept him on even after his own review board recommended action and after McCormack was arrested on charges of molestation.
McCormack went to jail in 2007 but the men who enabled him were elected by their brother bishops to run their national group. And now Bishop Kicanis, who could have stopped McCormack at the outset from having access to kids, is positioned to move into the top slot.
God help us.
For an interesting article on the liberal Bishop Kicanis go here.
Not just Catholics, but specifically Catholic priests as you can see from the photo at left. The priest's button reads "Ignore the Poor." Can you imagine the uproar if a group of Republicans sent out a postcard attacking rabbis in yarmulkas and prayer shawls? Or Muslim imams in turbans? The liberal media would be frothing at the mouth with indignation. As for the button, the Catholic Church gives more money to the poor than any other denomination. This is nothing but a disgraceful slur on both Catholic priests and Catholic laity. In fact, it looks like hate speech to me.
But apparently the post card bigotry hasn't aroused even a whisper in the mainstream media. A google search on the issue didn't provide one secular outlet in Minnesota or anywhere else about the bigoted campaign. But there were plenty of articles criticizing Archbishop Nienstedt's refusing Communion to homosexual activists. Interesting, eh?
Barbara Boxer is apparently one more Democrat who loathes the military. I enjoyed this spoof on her notorious remark correcting a military officer for being polite. But actually, Ma'am is a courtesy she doesn't deserve. Let's pray she gets the boot on election day.
I've written before about the new approach to palliative care. It used to mean keeping a patient comfortable and providing them all they needed to end their life naturally without suffering. But today, palliative care is just as likely, perhaps even more likely, to mean starving and dehydrating someone to death while drugging them so the "caregiver" can pretend the victim isn't suffering. But now the Josef Mengeles working in some hospices want to take the step a little further. They want to study their victims while they kill them.
Writing at his blog on the First Things website, Wesley Smith tells us, It Takes a Long Time to Starve a Severely Disabled Infant to Death by Withdrawing Medically-Supplied Nutrition. Reporting on material presented at the 18th International Congress on Palliative Care he shared the participants' findings on removing "artificial" nutrition and hydration (presumably tube feeding) from sick infants. Hal Siden, MD, from Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Vancouver, British Columbia presented a case series showing that some infants can live much longer than expected - almost a month after food and hydration are removed:
I got my laugh for the day (maybe the week) when I opened up my email this morning and found a link to an Associated Press article titled Catholic bloggers aim to purge dissenters. The author, Rachel Zoll, describes orthodox Catholic bloggers saying, "Enraged by dissent that they believe has gone unchecked for decades, and unafraid to say so in the starkest language, these activists are naming names and unsettling the church."
That is good news, indeed! The liberal bishops in the United States who cozy up to pro-abortion politicians, finance groups that support abortion and contraception, let homosexual activists hold pride events in their parishes, and on and on -- I'd say they need a little "unsettling."
Zoll quotes two sides of the spectrum. Michael Voris, commentator of The Vortex on Real Catholic TV and head of St. Michael's Media, a bastion of orthodoxy, says, "We're no more engaged in a witch hunt than a doctor excising a cancer is engaged in a witch hunt. We're just shining a spotlight on people who are Catholics who do not live the faith." And he does it with panache and power!
Then there's John Allen, Rome correspondent for the dissent rag, the National Catholic Reporter. He's the one coining the term "taliban Catholicism," although he says it can also refer to liberals who are enraged by any exercise of Church authority. But on the Internet, Zoll says, "conservatives are having the bigger impact."
When liberals whine about the orthodox, you know you're having an impact. They label every disagreement "vitriol" or "violence" or both. I know; I've been accused of it often enough for disagreeing with a liberal's position. I hope I can consider myself among the Catholic bloggers criticized in this article who are reviled for speaking the truth:
"Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, for tyour reward is great in heaven; they persecuted the prophets before you in the very same way."
Certainly, what we do must be done in charity, but tough love means calling a spade a spade and a heretic a heretic. (By the way, the definition of heresy is the denial of a doctrine that must be believed. Those pro-abortion Catholic politicians who say they can "personally oppose" abortion while publicly supporting it are heretics!)
If you want to see one of those "taliban Catholics" in action visit Real Catholic TV and watch The Vortex. Above all, read the article. It will make your day! But skip the comments -- they're an anti-Catholic diatribe. No surprise. The article is posted on MSNBC after all.
As for what one exemplary prelate thinks of that "taliban Catholic," Mike Voris:
A friend sent me the post below which is circulating the Internet. I thought, wherever it comes from the ideas have real merit and demonstrate the Biblical principle that "All things work together for good for those who love the Lord and serve according to His purpose." It's a great reminder to us that, no matter how bleak things look, God is still in charge and faithful to His people.
So never lose heart. In the Old Testament, God often used pagans and the enemies of faith to chastise His people and bring them back to Him. Isn't that what He continues to do today?
President Obama is part of His plan. When the wicked rule, the people call out to God for mercy. So, thank you, God, for President Obama who is working so hard to reinvigorate conservatism. That's one part of his agenda we can support whole-heartedly!
Subject: Wise Old Woman on Obama
A Different Slant On The Obama Presidency
One 82-year-old lady loves Obama and she may have a very good point. She says that Obama is amazing, and is rebuilding the American dream! She gives us an entirely new slant on the "amazing" job Obama is doing, and she says that she will thank God for the President. Keep reading for her additional comments and an explanation.
When discussing Obama, she says:
1. Obama destroyed the Clinton Political Machine, driving a stake through the heart of Hillary's presidential aspirations - something no Republican was ever able to do.
2. Obama killed off the Kennedy Dynasty - no more Kennedys trolling Washington looking for booze and women wanting rides home.
3. Obama is destroying the Democratic Party before our eyes! Dennis Moore had never lost a race. Evan Bayh had never lost a race. Byron Dorgan had never lost a race. Harry Reid - soon to be GONE! These are just a handful of the Democrats whose political careers Obama has destroyed. By the end of 2010, dozens more will be gone. Just think, in December of 2008 the Democrats were on the rise. In the last two election cycles, they had picked up 14 Senate seats and 52 House seats. The press was touting the death of the Conservative Movement and the Republican Party. However, in just one year, Obama put a stop to all of this and will probably give the House - if not the Senate - back to the Republicans.
4. Obama has completely exposed liberals and progressives for what they are. Sadly, every generation seems to need to re-learn the lesson on why they should never actually put liberals in charge. Obama is bringing home the lesson very well:
Liberals tax, borrow and spend.
Liberals won't bring themselves to protect America .
Liberals want to take over the economy.
Liberals think they know what is best for everyone.
Liberals are not happy until they are running YOUR life.
5. Obama has brought more Americans back to conservatism than anyone since Reagan. In one year, he has rejuvenated the Conservative Movement and brought out to the streets millions of freedom loving Americans. Name one other time when you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America !
6. Obama, with his "amazing leadership," has sparked the greatest period of sales of firearms and ammunition this country has seen. Law abiding citizens have rallied and have provided a "stimulus" to the sporting goods field while other industries have failed, faded, or moved off-shore.
7. In all honesty, one year ago I was more afraid than I have been in my life. Not afraid of the economy, but afraid of the direction our country was going. I thought, Americans have forgotten what this country is all about. My neighbors and friends, even strangers, have proved to me that my lack of confidence in the greatness and wisdom of the American people has been flat wrong.
8. When the American people wake up, no smooth talking teleprompter reader can fool them! Barack Obama has served to wake up these great Americans!
Again, I want to say: "Thank you, Barack Obama!" After all, this is exactly the kind of hope and change we desperately needed!!
November 2nd is HUGE!!!!
Please encourage others to Vote.............forward this onward, if you like.
A South American bishop has seen the enemy and it's the United Nations. Archbishop Hector Aguer of La Plata, Argentina says by promoting abortion and homosexuality the U.N. and its "satellite organizations" (like Planned Parenthood) are working to “shift paradigms of behavior and alter the definition of what real human rights are.”
Who's behind the wicked agenda? The Archbishop sees international powers who "despise the poor." He expressed his opinion in his weekly reflection on the television channel, America TV, as reported by Fides news service:
"We should be aware that here there is a conspiracy in the worst sense of the word. There is a plot to homogenize thinking and behavior in the world and it comes from the world's power centers. In particular, it comes from the centers of political power, supported by the centers of financial power. We are witnessing a new colonialism, a new imperialism....
"There are many problems to be solved in Argentina! For example, poor pensioners, who are always marginalized, who will never have the pension they deserve, and the large number of young people without work or study, and internal migration that leads to new settlements in subhuman conditions, increasing poverty, insecurity ... Regarding this, we see that the state cannot fully protect the lives and property of the population, but it takes time to rebuild the civil code, the penal code, and to impose these new paradigms that are but the tip of the iceberg of a new colonialism, a world imperialism that despises the poor in particular....
"[I]n the name of human rights, the United Nations - which should be entrusted with their care – instead becomes a transgressor of natural law. This occurs because for many years now, these centers of global power have had ideologies contrary to the nature of the human person and, therefore, contrary to their dignity, rights, and corresponding duties, imposed on them."
Archbishop Aguer sees the matter more clearly than do many U.S. bishops. The U.N. is probably the greatest enemy of the family in the world creating international documents that promote "reproductive rights" (newspeak for promoting abortion and contraception), replace parental rights with the authority of the state (U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child), and advance homosexual activity as a protected "civil right." The U.N. is so immersed in evil it reminds me of C.S. Lewis' evil bureaucracy, NICE, in That Hideous Strength.
And who is the major financier of all the evil at the U.N.? The American taxpayer. The U.S. is the largest contributor to the U.N. and its affiliated organizations providing about 22% of its budget. The actual amount is difficult to pin down because so many agencies underwrite U.N. programs. For example the Department of Health and Human Services contributes to UNICEF and the Department of Energy contributes to the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency.
Trying to identify the actual budget impact of U.N. funding, Sen. Tom Coburn in 2006 asked the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for the real amount totals from 2001-2005. It was considerably more than what was reported by the State Department. The figures presented were:
2001 - $3,183,166,000
2002 - $3,934,814,000
2003 - $3,841,323,000
2004 - $4,115,155,000
2005 - $5,327,276,000
One of the good things President George W. Bush did was to cut off funding for the U.N. population control agency because of their support for China's forced abortion program. Otherwise totals in some years would have been even higher.
In fiscal year 2009 OMB's annual report listed U.N. funding at $6,347,415,000. So in only nine years the U.S. contribution to the U.N. has almost doubled. The number of jobs at the U.N. increased by about 40% during that time as well. In view of the fact that the U.N. spends so much time and money: undermining the sovereignty of nations, challenging parental rights over the upbringing and education of their children, supporting moral abominations like coerced abortion, and draconian population control programs, and violating the moral and religious values of independent nations, isn't it time for taxpayers to challenge U.S. funding of this evil bureaucracy?
If you want to find out for yourself what the U.N. is up to, subscribe to the Friday Fax of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM). C-Fam's mission is "To defend life and family at international institutions and to publicize the debate." They have done a masterful job with a tiny staff of exposing the evil agenda at the U.N. that not only fails to protect the individual but works for his destruction, especially the most helpless little ones in the womb.
Announce that the U.S. is returning to the principle of zero real growth in the U.N. regular budget,
Identify key reforms to improve budgetary constraint and insist that the U.N. adopt and implement them,
Demand that large donors be given more influence over U.N. budgetary decisions and restore legislative withholding if the U.N. fails to adopt changes to that effect, and
Demand increased transparency and accountability at the U.N.
These things sound reasonable and like a preliminary move toward reining in this out-of-control liberal monster. Something must be done. Archbishop Aguer is right about the United Nations as it is today, a tool of powerful interests who are promoting an ugly new world order that destroys the rights of the individual and "despises the poor." That moral and religious people are forced to pay for it with our taxes as it undermines our rights is an injustice that must be addressed.
Surprise, surprise...children of same-sex couples are more likely to be homosexual. This finding of researcher Walter Schumm enrages the homosexul community, but to the average person it's just plain common sense. Children learn what they live. How can a child raised in a same-sex household get the normal view of the complementarity of the sexes. It just ain't very likely! But to gay activists who want to make everyone think their parenting is normal, the truth is inconvenient. Someone might use it to (Horrors!) question the wisdom of homosexual adoption. Here's a section from the Catholic News Agency article:
Schumm, a professor of family studies at Kansas State University, said he rigorously tried to disprove his own theory. Ultimately, he reached a conclusion that mainstream sociologists, and even a prominent gay activist, have described as common sense.
In new research and an analysis of more than two dozen earlier studies, Schumm found that 27 percent of lesbian parents' children identified themselves as homosexual, and 19 percent of the children of gay men; by contrast, 5 to 10 percent of the children of heterosexual parents self-identify as homosexual.
Furthermore, Schumm observed gay parents' children increasingly identifying as homosexual as they emerged from adolescence. His analysis of families with older children showed that one-third of gay fathers' families, and 58 percent of families of lesbian mothers, included at least one gay or lesbian child.
“Most scholars actually agree with the concept that gay people ought to be more likely to have gay children,” he told CNA in an Oct. 19 interview. “Even people on the liberal side of things actually pretty much agree with the idea that there are going to be social influences.”
He noted that prominent gay activist Jim Burroway has criticized proponents of the “parental influence” theory but has also said that such findings would not be surprising. In a column published on a gay and lesbian website in 2006, Burroway noted that virtually every theory about the origin of homosexuality would likely predict a higher incidence in children of gay parents.
Schumm's article is scheduled to be published in the November edition of the Journal of Biosocial Science.
My husband and I took up square dancing two weeks ago. Well, actually, we are reverts to square dancing. Twenty-five years ago we danced at the plus one level which means you can dance the basic 75 calls (Mainstream) and about twenty-five additional. But we are back to the basics because, while we can remember the names of many calls (Flutter Wheel, Chain Down the Line, Relay the Deucie, Load the Boat, Tea Cup Chain, Do Paso, etc.), we can't remember the several moves that make them up. So we enrolled in square dancing 101 and are lovin' it!
Last night after class I got to thinking that square dancing is a good metaphor for life. The square is a microcosm of society. Your family (the couple) is thrown into a diverse community (the square) made up of people from different backgrounds, different religions, etc. (like neighborhoods, the workplace, etc.). You all have to work together to accomplish a goal (the dance). If somebody goofs up, it affects the entire square (just like sin affects the entire culture). Sometimes the others in the square can pull the person back into line (admonishing the "sinner"), but sometimes the square breaks down completely (societal meltdown).
There are strict rules in square dancing that must be followed at the caller's direction (the creed of square dancing so to speak). You may prefer swing dancing (you do get to "swing your partner"), but you are not free to "do your own thing" in the square because you'll break it down. And you won't be welcome if you refuse to follow the rules. (Remember when society's institutions kept people in line?)
If you obey the caller's directions (the "commandments" of square dancing), you can complete the dance successfully (like the "dance" of life) and have a lot of fun. If you don't follow the caller...well, you'll never enjoy the dance.
Last night was interesting. Some combinations worked well together. Others broke down continuously. We were in one square that completed all the moves with only a few hand grabs to get an out-of-line dancer back on target. Others were one goof up and break down after another. All the couples in those squares could do was "go home" (the couple's position at the beginning of the dance) and start over. (Does this remind you of a sacrament?). Sometimes the caller would give the couples having problems extra guidance during the breaks (words from the wise).
Part of the problem was the individuals who skipped classes. If you miss learning the moves, how can you complete them in the square? The importance of learning and studying the square dancing "creed" got a graphic demonstration.
One other thing that struck me was the importance of virtue, patience especially. Larry and I missed the first three classes, but we had no trouble joining on the fourth night because we already knew the most basic moves. Much of what we learned 25 years ago is coming back. One or two repetitions is enough for us to do the calls pretty fluently. The new couples don't have that advantage. Everything is different and they have to remember moves, sometimes complicated, that they've only just learned. I'm in a hurry to move on and get to the point we can join a club, but the class matches the pace of the slowest learners. That's when it's important to remember that you can be an "angel" (the term used for accomplished dancers who come to help). We aren't officially angels, but can help keep the square from breaking down.
When we danced 25 years ago, square dancing was a youthful activity. There were plenty of older couples, but I would have guessed the average age was somewhere around 30. From my observations these days, it's definitely an older crowd. I doubt if there's anyone in our class younger than 45 (I'm being generous) and many are older than we are. Why, I wonder? Are the young folks doing most of their socializing on Facebook and playing World of Warcraft? Are they too busy to take the time to learn? Is babysitting too expensive? Whatever the reasons, it's too bad because square dancing is a fun, healthy, social activity.
I'll mention one other aspect of my metaphor. A serendipitous conversation led us back to square dancing. I was at the church pancake breakfast and sat down with a couple I didn't know. In passing conversation they mentioned that they square dance and the memory of it brought a smile to my face and a lift to my heart. They gave me information on classes and a week later, we were back on the dance floor. Doesn't that demonstrate the power of witnessing. The husband has called us several times to check up on our progress and encourage us. Wouldn't it be wonderful if more people did that to encourage one another in the faith!
Square dancing seems to me to be a very Catholic activity, part of the true, the good, and the beautiful. It was a family activity for us 25 years ago since, in addition to dancing in a club, we belonged to a square dancing camping group that included all kinds of activities for the children. Our two oldest took lessons and danced for a few years before our life with five children got too busy and complicated and we dropped out. But when I mentioned to our oldest that we were dancing again, she said, "Maybe when we move back to Virginia (They're in the process of trying to sell their house in Texas) we can take lessons and dance too." Nothing would please me more than to share a square with Alice and Chris. And you too if you've a mind to join the square!
A friend alerted me this morning that Fr. Z recommended my blog to his readers at What does the prayer really say? I read Father's column in The Wanderer and visit his site often so it was a thrill to see his post! He often makes me laugh, like his referring to the National Catholic Reporter as the "National Catholic Fishwrap." Amen!
My friends at Defend Life in Baltimore sponsor a Face the Truth Tour every summer that exposes thousands of people in a number of cities from Hagerstown to Baltimore to the Delmarva Peninsula to the graphic reality of abortion. Two years ago, police in Harford County, MD violated the free speech rights of the Face the Tour group. Not only were 18 arrested but the women and girls had their shirts pulled out and their breasts inspected in front of the men.
Fortunately, Defend Life doesn't play nice when violation of constitutional rights is involved and they sued. The 4th Circuit recently upheld their complaint. Judge Richard D. Bennett denied immunity from prosecution to the police officers involved and his decision read in part:
The Amended Complaint sets forth sufficient facts to suggest that the Trooper Defendants, through their arrest of Plaintiffs, executed a policy of suppressing free speech that was based upon an unconstitutionally vague and overbroad ordinance...This Court finds with respect to the alleged sexually invasive strip-search at the Detention Center, Plaintiffs have sufficiently stated a claim.
I particularly enjoyed this spoof because my nephew played the "modern major general" in The Pirates of Penzance when he was attending Bridgewater College -- and did a very credible job of it I might add. I've put the Gilbert and Sullivan original beneath the spoof for fun. Hope you enjoy them both
The video you are about to see is a commentary on a documentary by the ministry "Thine Eyes." See for yourself the witness of tens of thousands of young people who participate in the March for Life every year and promise that a tidal wave of life is coming to the voters' booth soon. Respect for life is the primary moral issue of our age and those who fail to defend it must answer to God. Plan now to attend the annual March for Life in January and check out an abortion mill near you. No doubt the sidewalk warriors will welcome you joining them in prayer. You can visit Thine Eyes and contribute to their ministry here.
Channing Moss was impaled with a piece of live ordinance. The medical people could have followed protocol and let him die, but they saw the value of one human life and did what they had to do. What a miracle story! Get out the tissues and say a prayer of thansgiving.
One of the bright lights of the pro-life movement died Friday. Dr. Mildred Jefferson, former head of National Right to Life, a pro-life physician, and ardent defender of the unborn served in so many ways. Feminists for Life ran an article honoring that reads in part:
Regarding her own career, Jefferson asserted, "I am at once a physician, a citizen, and a woman, and I am not willing to stand aside and allow this concept of expendable human lives to turn this great land of ours into just another exclusive reservation where only the perfect, the privileged, and the planned have the right to live."
Dr. Jefferson, who called the pro-life movement "second only to the abolitionist movement in the profound change it has brought about in American thinking," helped to found the National Right to Life Committee, which she served both as president and as a member of the board. She was a founding member, past president, and board member of the Value of Life Committee of Massachusetts and Massachusetts Citizens for Life, and headed the Right to Life Crusade.
Jefferson also encouraged pro-life college and university students to organize. "If I had my way," she said, "there would be a pro-life group on every college campus here in the United States and in its territories.... I hope that wherever you [students] have a department of women's studies or black studies that you will have a corresponding pro-life movement."
Please pray for the repose of the soul of this pro-life hero. I had the great blessing of meeting and having dinner with her years ago when Bishop Thomas Welsh invited pro-life leaders to an event honoring her. I was humbled in her presence. I'm reminded of what Henry Hyde once said:
When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I've often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God – and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world – and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, 'Spare him because he loved us,' – and God will look at you and say not, 'Did you succeed?' but 'Did you try?'
Certainly Dr. Jefferson was not alone on Friday when she faced the Author of all life. She was surrounded by the little ones for whom she so eloquently spoke, and I have no doubt they spoke for her.
The Gardasil vaccine that is supposed to protect women from cervical cancer continues to ratchet up the deaths among young women. Judicial Watch, the watchdog organization released a special report in 2008 detailing almost 9,000 adverse events following reception of the vaccine including 18 deaths between 2006 and 2008. Other serious responses include Grand Mal seizures, coma, paralysis, outbreaks of warts, auto-immune diseases, etc. The Judicial Watch report outlines problems with the FDA procedures including the fact that Merck used an aluminum-based placebo in the trial that may have tainted the results.
Spain removed Gardasil from the market in 2009 after two girls were hospitalized with serious reactions within hours of receiving the shot. Unfortunately, the suspension was related only to the involved batch of vaccine.
In 2010 India suspended its program after 4 girls in a group of only 120 died following reception of the vaccine.
Even a doctor who helped get the vaccine approved, Diane Harper, has criticized Merck's aggressive program to administer it to children as young as eleven. In the same article, another doctor, Scott Rahner married to a physician, told CBS what happened to his daughter after she received the vaccine. “My daughter went from a varsity lacrosse player at Choate to a chronically ill, steroid-dependent patient with autoimmune myofasciitis. I’ve had to ask myself why I let my eldest of three daughters get an unproven vaccine against a few strains of a nonlethal virus that can be dealt with in more effective ways.”
This is the story of big pharma these days. Vaccines like Gardasil are rushed to market with FDA approval, often gained through the intervention of those connected to pharmaceutical firms. Gardasil continues to result in serious complications including death. Since its approval 53 deaths have occurred following Gardasil vaccination. In some cases the CDC downplays the deaths as coincedence or unconfirmed because the reporting entity (sometimes Merck) sends in reports that don't contain enough information to follow up. Clearly, however, death and serious reaction is the result for some recipients. That two U.S. governors tried to make this vaccine mandatory for all teenage girls is chilling. Just ask the mothers of girls who died or were seriously injured after receiving Gardasil.
Think about it. If Ford had the same record with its cars, wouldn't we see a massive recall?
Susan Boyle wowed the world when she sang "I Dreamed a Dream" on Britain's Got Talent. Her Cinderella story thrills millions around the world. Now she tells in her recent book how doctors advised her mum to abort her and said she'd never amount to anything. “What they didn’t know," she wrote, "was that I’m a fighter and I’ve been trying all my life to prove them wrong.” (Read more here.... )
And she has! The dream goes on for Susan Boyle, and for all who see her as an inspiration and proof that the dream can come true!
40 Days for Life is in full swing, praying and saving lives. In Birmingham, AL, the sidewalk warriors reported saving twins. Here's the report from the 40 Days Blog:
“It is a rare time to witness a save during the 40 Days for Life campaign,” wrote Judy in Birmingham, “but I was present for two saves simultaneously! Yes — TWINS!”
Prayer volunteers watched as a young woman, her boyfriend and her grandmother walked into Planned Parenthood. The grandmother seemed downright unfriendly. Judy said “she went inside for a half hour — and came out a totally transformed woman.
What happened during that half hour? “The prayer volunteers on the sidewalk prayed fervently for the woman’s granddaughter,” Judy said, “a very young woman determined to abort her babies. When she came out … she said that she had decided to keep her babies.”
The grandmother, who was standing beside her, said, “Yes, she’s having TWINS!”
“It was indeed a rare and joyful moment,” said Judy. “We all smiled and thanked God for His gift of life — in this case, GIFTS of life.
There's a 40 Days for Life near you. Jesus prayed for 40 days in the wilderness. Won't you join Him at an abortion mill near you for at least one day? Check out the locations at the website.
My friend Missy Smith is running for Congress in the District of Columbia against Eleanor Holmes Norton. One of the most important part of her campaign is educating voters on the life issues. Missy is an abortion survivor who knows the personal pain of a mother killing her children. She founded the organization Wake Up! and is an eloquent defender of both the unborn baby's right to live and the baby's mom to be protected from the lies, unscrupulous actions, and butchery of the bottom feeders in the abortion industry.
Getting ads like Missy's on TV is almost impossible because the drive-by media loves abortion almost as much as radical feminists and liberal politicians. But the media is obliged to take political ads and have no right of censorship. So running for office is one of the most effective ways to get pro-life ads on TV. Check out the two below which are scheduled to run in the late news hours on the three major networks. And please help purchase additional air time by contributing to Missy's campaign. I did and I pray you will too. Every little bit counts. Give the widow's mite and receive the blessing promised by St. Luke, "for the measure you measure out will be measured back to you." Think of the harvest of grace you will receive from God who will reward you for standing up for his babies. He will not be outdone in generosity!
The coverage of the rescue of the Chilean miners gave me goosebumps and made me raise my hands and heart to God in thanksgiving. How inspiring it was to see the miners saying their faith sustained them during their long months underground as those above worked to save them, and to hear the Chilean president thank all who participated in the rescue and, above all, God. What a joyful ending to a potentially tragic situation. It witnessed to the ingenuity of men and to the endurance of the human spirit.
We live in a feminized culture, but this rescue episode was primarily the work of men: from the engineers who designed the drill and rescue capsule (God bless America!) to the miners themselves who work under the earth. What an appropriate day to return to daylight than October 13th the anniversary of Mary's last apparition at Fatima -- the day the sun danced. One could imagine all heaven dancing to celebrate man's goodness. We are, indeed, made in God's image and likeness and this rescue day gave witness to that wonderful reality! Praised be to Jesus Christ, both now and forever!
Pope Benedict's language to the Synod of Bishops from the Middle East may not be as direct as saying we live in a diabolically possessed culture, but that's the fundamental meaning under the words. Addressing the synod on October 11th, the pope focused on a number of societal problems: terrorism in the name of religion, economic exploitation that dehumanizes man, drugs, and the devaluation of marriage. He said, “These are false divinities that must be unmasked, because they are not God.” Addressing the marriage issue, the pope said, “Today marriage does not count and chastity is no longer a virtue… these ideologies that dominate and that are imposed forcefully are divinities.” He called them "false gods."
Yes, the gods of lust, greed, and anger are raised up by many people who fall down and worship at their feet. The enslaved souls talk about freedom - freedom to choose all things no matter how depraved. But these poor souls are enslaved and work for their masters to enslave others. The demons have been busy in the media and the courts and at the highest levels of government and business where they have many devotees. And they never rest. The assault comes from all sides.
The god of lust brought us abortion-on-demand, legalization of sodomy, and is busy advancing the assault on marriage. Freedom to choose is denied to the voters as judges impose worship of the false gods. A federal judge in California ruled last September that the Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) policy of the military is unconstitutional and must fall. On Tuesday she issued an injunction forbidding enforcement of the DADT act. The military has 60 days to respond. But the writing is on the wall. The demon of lust must rule everywhere.
Can anyone doubt that "gay marriage" is coming in the same way as Griswold v. Connecticut (legalizing contraception), Roe v. Wade (legalizing abortion), and Lawrence v. Texas (legalizing sodomy). Screwtape has many patients under his dominion especially in the federal courts.
That's why Christians must be prepared to be martyrs. They will be called fools by those who believe themselves to be wise. They will be mocked and ridiculed by the rich and powerful. They will be cursed and assaulted in front of abortion mills and even in their own businesses when they refuse to kowtow to the god of lust.
What's the response? To fight and not grow weary because the victory is our God's. Every man must die and his last battle will determine under whose standard he serves for eternity. Jesus Christ calls on the slaves of the enemy to surrender to Him. He will break their chains and draw them to Himself even in their final moments if they repent.
Can anyone doubt that we live in an age chillingly similar to the first century? The response is not despair but faith and hope. And, above all, the culture should know we are Christians by the love we have for one another and for our enemies. "Love God and do what you will," says St. Augustine. And never give up.
My husband and I saw Secretariat last night. What a film! What a horse! His Triple Crown performance has never been equalled, but the story behind the horse shows the power of love, courage, and determination. Penny Chenery Tweedy had to fight and risk everything to keep and race Secretariat.
After her parents died she faced $6 million in death taxes. If you want to know why so many family farms are sold for taxes, this movie illustrates it. Penny Tweedy was able to sell breeding rights in Secretariat to raise the money, but there was a clause in the contract that required performance. If Secretariat lost two races, the contract was void. She had the determination to risk everything because she believed in the horse and the film shows the special relationship between the animal and his owner.
And he did lose. The first race at Aqueduct in New York. But, as history shows, he went on not only to win but break records that stand today. His performance at the Belmont Stakes made him a legend.
I don't know how much of the film's story is true and how much artistic license, but the relationships among the characters makes the film. And it's interesting to look at news coverage of the time. The film even copied the clothing worn by the major characters on race day. Penny Tweedy has a cameo during one of the race scenes; see if you can pick her out before they show her photo at the end. It's a great production and we plan to go again with some of our grandchildren. It's a great metaphor for St. Paul's statement about running the race. Do it like Secretariat - with all your heart!
It's really interesting. Liberals fight to prevent conscience laws to protect Christian medical personnel and pharmacists who refuse to participate in killing babies, but they let Muslims censor innocuous speech and even violate the rights of others. Can you imagine the outcry if a Christian cab driver refused to drive to an abortion mill? We've already seen the outcry against pharmacists at Walmart and other chains who refuse to dispense drugs to kill babies. Obviously refusing to handle pork is a more serious issue and more deserving of protection than refusing to kill babies.
Phyllis Schlafly has a good election guide for voters in the form of questions to ask candidates. She doesn't, unfortunately, include questions on abortion, although she has one on defunding Planned Parenthood. But my primary questions are about protecting the lives of the innocent.
Will you vote for legislation recognizing the personhood of the unborn no matter how that life begins: conception, cloning, IV fertilization, etc.?
Will you vote to regulate abortion facilities like other outpatient surgical clinics?
Will you vote for parental consent and notification laws to protect minor girls from predatory abortion practices?
Will you vote to require medical assistance to babies born alive after abortion?
Will you vote for laws making it illegal to take a minor out of state for an abortion?
I'm sure there are others, but this is a start to determine whether the candidate claiming to be pro-life really is. And, of course, he should also commit to defunding Planned Parenthood the biggest abortion provider in the world.
I had a discussion this morning at our parish pancake breakfast about the moral obligation to attend Sunday Mass under pain of mortal sin. (N.B. My friend goes to Mass every Sunday so the discussion was theoretical.) The issue centered around whether it is really grievous matter such that God would send someone to hell forever for deliberately missing one Sunday Mass or even missing occasionally without sufficient reason (illness, incapacity, caring for someone who cannot go, etc.). My statement that the Church teaches it is a mortal sin got a shrug and the question, "Show me where the Church has made an ex cathedra statement about missing Mass." Of course that same response could be given about any number of sins. As far as I know there are no ex cathedra statements about contraception or fornication. Is there an ex cathedra statement about abortion or sodomy or embezzlement?
A few days ago I received the following E-note from the Republican National Coalition for Life. What encouraging news! Why, in the face of the clear success with non-embryonic stem cells and the failure of embryonic stem cells to show such success, do scientists continue to pursue it? Playing God perhaps? Is it "empowering" for the scientist who has severed his ties to the Almighty to dabble in life itself? Look at Josef Mengele and Jack Kevorkian. Pray for scientists ethically pursuing medical breakthroughs. They offer true hope!
Important Break-Through In Non-Embryonic Stem Cell Research
A huge breakthrough in stem cell research was announced last week as a new study revealed another technique to create stem cells without destroying human embryos.
Known as "induced pluripotent stem" (iPS) cells, these cells are functionally equivalent to stem cells derived from embryos, but iPS cells do not have the ethical concerns of creating or harming human embryos or of requiring the use of women's eggs. The new process also has the technical benefits of being a simple technique with a high success rate that can produce a large number of both patient-specific as well as disease-specific stem cell lines.
Many stem cell researchers are heralding the new technique and indicating that they will be concentrating in this area rather than embryonic stem cells in the future. This development underscores the need for any federal funding to be directed at this ethical, cutting edge area of scientific research rather than embryo-destructive research.
Prior to adjourning, the House passed by a voice vote the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act (S. 3751), a five-year reauthorization of the National Cord Blood Inventory Program which had previously passed the Senate. Umbilical cord blood is an ethical and effective way of procuring adult stem cells which are successfully treating over 70 diseases and does not involve destroying human embryos.
For more information on this exciting scientific breakthrough, you may be interested in these links to recent news articles on the subject: Associated Press, Bloomberg, Boston Globe, NPR, Reuters, TIME,Washington Post, and USA Today.
Meanwhile, federally funded embryonic stem cell research projects are continuing thanks to a recent federal circuit court ruling which reverses an August 23 preliminary injunction issued by federal Judge Royce Lamberth. Even though the Dickey-Wicker federal law bars federal taxpayer dollars from being spent for research using human embryonic stem cells, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has reversed the preliminary injunction, allowing federal funding of such embryo-destructive research to continue until the case is decided, ultimately at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The recent suicide of a homosexual student at Rutgers after a sex act was posted on line is tragic. All suicides are tragic. But what's irresponsible is the way gay activists are politicizing this to promote their agenda. All Christians (and the "far right"), they claim, are guilty of killing the young man by our words. I don't know a single person who justifies the students posting the sex video on line. But gay activists have made the event a jumping off point to engage in another round of "jamming," the term used to describe demonizing all who criticize immoral homosexual acts by accusing them of intolerance, homophobia, hate speech, and on, and on. You can read about their strategy here.
The treatment of this particular suicide, which is certainly sad, is much different from the treatment of young women who commit suicide after abortion. A 13 year study in Finland of all deaths in THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF WOMEN, age 15 to 49, found a statistically significant increase in suicide the year after abortion. Women who gave birth had the lowest death rate. Have you heard the media talk about that? Have you heard them blame the pro-choice crowd and the abortionists for killing women with their lies? Not a chance! Because, like sodomy, abortion is a protected act and the liberal media supporting their pro-choice cronies will do all in their power to make sure abortion continues and expands.
Homosexuals may, in fact, be more at risk of suicide with or without provocation. According to a paper by Dr. Neil Whitehead, homosexuals have "higher rates of suicide, depression, bulimia, antisocial personality disorder, and substance abuse." But the gay movement wouldn't want to hear about that, because it indicates that their lifestyle is dangerous to the mental and physical health of those who engage in it.
Well, as a matter of fact, it is. Which is why parents should love their children enough to encourage them to get out of it.
I started my day today with a vicious comment on my Bishop Loverde, Where is Fr. Haley? blog. I'm used to it by now so I don't get the powerful adrenaline surge any more. (I have always hated cofrontation and am very familiar with the fight or flight reaction that makes me want to run.)
This morning's post just made me sad. This lady's attitude explains graphically the hostility of the gay community toward Christians. Many would feed us to the lions if they could because we dare to condemn, not them but their perverted lifestyle or the lifestyle of their children. Either we accept it and celebrate it or we shut up. And if we won't, they'll shut us up with hate crime legislation.
There's no fleeing -- so Christians better hold their ground and fight. Read Ephesians 6, put on the armor of God and take up your sword, the Word of God. If we don't start holding our ground we won't have any left in the entire world.
The Catholic Church calls it immoral, but that hasn't prevented plenty of Catholics among others from taking advantage of in vitro (IV) fertilization to get the baby they want. The technique has allowed millions of infertile couples to have children, but at what cost? The impact on their children is only just beginning to be seen.
And what's the bigger implication for society? Here's a portion of an article on The Heritage Foundation website about Nobel prizewinner Robert Edwards, developer of IV, that should arouse the concern of all about the potential for coercive eugenic screening. Is that coming next?
As Edwards worked to develop procedures and culture media that could sustain human life, many of his research subjects died, including embryos conceived using his own sperm. In addition to refining the success rate and safety of his techniques, Edwards developed techniques for pre-implantation genetic diagnosis that would allow parents to identify genetic diseases before taking the developing human being from the petri dish to the womb. The same techniques increasingly allow scientists to select embryos on the basis of their sex or other desired physical characteristics, practices that remain controversial.
“Soon it will be a sin of parents,” Edwards reportedly said in 1999, “to have a child that carries the heavy burden of genetic disease. We are entering a world where we have to consider the quality of our children.”
I love this! What a beautiful way to sacrifice for the babies. I'm pinning on my little bare baby feet since I'm not on a college campus, and I'm praying and fasting for the unborn this week. May the Lord use all the graces from prayer and sacrifices to save the lives of these little innocent ones and the souls of their parents.
The video below shows a confrontation between students, administration, and police at Carleton University in Ottowa, but it could have happened at Notre Dame or Georgetown. Pray for the next generation of pro-lifers. They fill me with hope for the future. May God bless and multiply their efforts. If "offensive speech" has no rights, no speech has rights. What is acceptable today, is the offensive speech of tomorrow. Pray for the zeal and courage of these students. With prayer, zeal, and courage we can make a revolution for life.
Lately, there's been violence at some abortion mills. Oh, you think, those radicals pro-lifers again. No -- abortionists and their clients are packing heat and looking for trouble.
Abortionist Gary Boyle brandished a handgun in the faces of members of 40 Days for Life who were praying and distributing literature last Saturday outside his Charleston, SC facility. He claimed he feared for his life from the pro-lifers offering abortion alternatives.
If you've ever been to a prayer vigil at an abortion mill you know they are peaceful and prayerful. Often the abortion mill deathscorts will harrass the pro-lifers to prevent them from interacting and offering help to women. As someone who has spent thousands of hours sidewalk counseling at abortion mills, I can testify to the fact that the only verbal and physical violence I ever saw came from the other side. Cursing, swearing, obscene gestures, threats -- but nobody ever waved a gun in my face.
Well, the anti-freedom marchers came to Washington last Saturday and displayed their socialist colors along with the Communist hammer and sickle. Look at the first video and then check out the video from one of the big tea party demonstration in September 2009.
Where do the liberals want to take us? Straight to a socialist country in the image of Cuba. Remember the boat people trying to escape? Where will you run if they create an America in the image of Castro, Stalin, Mao, and company?
Maybe this is why the rally story ended up on page A3 of the Washington Post with no photos. First, they had a fraction of the numbers of the tea party rallies and Glenn Beck's freedom rally and the crowd was overwhelmed with socialists who want to overthrow our Consitution. Americans for Prosperity has a second video that shows more footage of the crowd marching.
Watch and compare.
Now here are two arial shots of the Glenn Beck Restoring Honor Rally and the "one nation" socialist rally last Saturday sent by my friend Fletcher Armstrong from the Center for Bioethical Concern. America is on the rise. Pray for the day our Constitution once again becomes the law of the land.
A friend called me today to say she thinks we need the equivalent of a Catholic Tea Party to wake up Catholics and get them energized to defend the faith. It's a message that seems to be germinating in the minds of other orthodox Catholics. Mike Voris discussed it a few days ago on The Vortex. Here's his take on it.
The dissent group, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, hates the idea of a Catholic Tea Party which means the idea has merit and should definitely be pursued. The image of Catholics in the pew getting angry enough to start exposing and doing their best to boot bad bishops must have them quaking in their boots. After all, these dissenters only have power because they are entrenched in chanceries around the country under betrayer bishops waving the banner of liberalism. Bad priests like Frs. Richard Sparks, Richard McBrien, and Richard Rohr (Poor St. Richard!) have only been able to advance their evil ideas because of bad bishops who enable them. They have a helluva lot to answer for and I mean that literally. Jesus told us we'd know men by their fruits and theirs are as rotten and putrid as the failed Irish potato crop.
So I told my friend I'm all for a Catholic Tea Party. Whatever we can do to educate Catholics about faith in action the way the tea party movement is educating voters about the Constitution, let's do it. The Catholic dissenters may have money poured into their coffers by the likes of George Soros, but we have the power of the Holy Spirit. Ultimately, they don't have the chance of a snowball in hell.
