Sunday Meditation: St. John Bosco, Our Parish Patron Saint

St. John Bosco: 1815-1888

Among modern saints (anyone recent enough to leave a legacy in photographs), St. John Bosco must be counted as one of the most fascinating. Even as a young boy his evangelical zeal set him apart from his peers. And yet he was all boy with a talent for running races, tightrope walking, and engaging in gymnastic stunts. He juggled and told stories and used all his talents to attract an audience of youngsters whom he taught the catechism. Like a magnet, he drew young people to him and carried a special love for them in his heart and a zeal for their salvation that carried over into his priesthood.

Italy at that time was suffering from internal struggles and many poor young boys were coming to the cities where they lived on the streets and often got into trouble. Don Bosco set about solving the problem by opening an oratory, a combination home, church, academic and trade school. He concerned himself about both their bodies and their souls and his mother soon moved in to help with the cooking and organization.

The primary/caucus season is upon us with the first event in Iowa only a few days away followed a week later by New Hampshire.  This may be the most important election we've ever faced as a nation. It's clear we are self-destructing. If things aren't turned around, the country founded under God on the principle that "all men...are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights" may completely disappear. It's already well on the way. Of course, no man is our savior except Jesus Christ, but a godly man after the heart of God can be a leader who fosters and encourages reform.

There is something else about this election that is unique. The man who steps into the oval office after his inauguration will be serving his first year during the 100th anniversary year of the apparitions of Our Lady at Fatima, Portugal. She promised to protect that country and preserve the faith there forever.

Except for a very few exceptions (the District of Columbia being one), the Federal Government has no right to occupy land throughout the U.S. so how come the feds "own" such a huge chunk of the west? That's basically what the standoff in Oregon was about that led to what may
be the cold blooded murder of LaVoy Finicum by FBI agents.

Note also the info about the lawyer defending abortionist Douglas Karpen in a previous case being a political donor to the DA, Devon Anderson. There is a foul stench associated with this case and readers would do well to remember also that the biggest abortion mill in the United States is in Houston. How much money is being poured into the coffers of judges, prosecutors, and other government officials by the abortion industry in Houston to suppress investigations of abortion and grease the skids for the killers?  Is it just a coincidence that the Houston Planned Parenthood building is shaped like a cash register?

Following the intercommunion with the Lutherans recently at the Vatican, it should come as no surprise that the pontiff will travel to Lund, Sweden in October to open the 500th anniversary year commemorating Martin Luther's revolt against the Church. [Source] Remember that Martin Luther was condemned for heresy and excommunicated. His actions spurred violence throughout Europe and spawned numerous other heretical sects. Many saints arose as they lay down their lives to provide the Mass in places like England and the Netherlands where persecution was rampant. I wonder -- will the commemoration include references to them or would that put a damper on the Luther love fest?

We're still neophyte beekeepers, but learning is half the fun. And you'd be surprised how often bees come up in the writings of the Church and how many saints and holy men and women were beekeepers.

Here's a bit of trivia you probably don't know. When Lucia of Fatima was professed as a Dorothean sister her mother asked her what she wanted as a gift. Her answer? A beehive. Can you imagine carting that on a bus or train? I imagine the area around her mother cleared out pretty fast.

So now I have another intercessor to join St. Ambrose, St. Valentine, and St. Rita. Sr. Lucia of Fatima, please pray for our girls to survive this cold, snowy winter and start off strong and healthy in the Spring.

13 Hours and Why Benghazi Matters!

I went to the movie 13 Hours last week. What a gut-wrenching experience. The terrorist attack on the consulate and the annex in Benghazi was brutal, relentless, and obviously planned. The two American ex-Navy seals killed at the annex by mortar bombs illustrate graphically that this was no random protest. Those Libyans involved were trained and had the weaponry to inflict devastating damage. Random protesters don't fire mortar bombs from the seat of their pants and hit their targets!

Throughout my years fighting abortion, I can't count the number of people who insisted, "I'm not pro-abortion; I'm pro-choice." That statement, of course, means absolutely nothing unless the choices are identified. I'm "pro-choice" too and so is God, when you come down to it. He is the ultimate pro-choicer since He gave us free will. But He gave it to us so we could freely choose THE GOOD. It is a miss-use of free will when one uses it to choose evil. Honoring the Stranded March for Life Pilgrims

Stranded in the snow with hundreds of other Catholics and a few priests? What to do? Why -- build an altar out of snow, set up a sound system, and pray in Thanksgiving -- which is the meaning of "Eucharist." The witness of these young people is going viral and a media that ignores the March for Life every year is covering the students in the snow -- not only the Mass, but their kindness to fellow travelers: passing out food and water bottles, offering the use of the bus restroom, etc.

 They do, indeed, show that the pro-life movement is a witness to love: love for the murdered unborn, for their deluded parents, for the paid killers in white coats who so desperately need prayers for repentance and conversion, and for the entire mass of humanity, especially those in challenging situations.

And one message of these lovely students comes through loud and clear! Life is beautiful!

Dymphna and I Agree: Washing Women's Feet on Holy Thursday is a "Side Show!"

I love to read Dymphna's blog, especially her random thoughts posts. Today she offered random thoughts while she watches the snow. This one was especially on target:

"In parishes around the world, Holy Thursday has been a sad and sometimes sacrilegious side show for years. Now the side show is official."

No doubt readers know to what she is referring, Pope Francis authorizing the washing of women's feet on Holy Thursday. Of course it's been going on for years with priests disobeying Holy Mother Church. The pope himself engaged in the disobedient practice in Argentina. So is it any wonder that he would now institutionalize the disobedience when he has the chance?

A friend of mine sent me the statement below which he said was posted yesterday as a comment on The Vortex. This, my friends, explains it all. How many bishops stand on the podium at the March for Life like politicians? One of the reasons we still have abortion is because our shepherds have never acted like they believe the baby is the same as the rest of us. If they did, they would have been leading the sit-ins to save the babies. And if they all ended up in jail; there would have been signs on the churches saying, "No Mass today, our priests are all in jail." How long do you think abortion would have lasted if every bishop had acted that way?

So many marches: in the rain, in the snow, frigid temperatures and mild, sunshine or clouds. How many out of the 40+ was I there? Thirty-five? I haven't gone in a few years because of health issues. I never thought when I started marching in 1974 that we would still be fighting to save the babies over forty years later.

The early years when the March began at the Capitol: Jessie Jackson speaking so eloquently in defense of the babies then turning traitor to become a champion of killing -- while so many black babies are slaughtered. Oh, the tragedy of greed for money and power and how it brings down those who could be great leaders for life.

I am grieving for Holy Mother Church. Somebody posted two quotes on Facebook yesterday comparing a statement from Pope Pius XII about the unchanging Church and a quote from Pope Francis. The difference was amazing. I tried to find them but couldn't. If anybody else sees them, please post them in the comments.

The wisdom of Pope Pius compared to the banality and silliness of Pope Francis' statement was staggering. Sometimes I think our Holy Father is Barack Obama's twin brother. He makes things up as he goes along and attacks anybody who disagrees with him.

How I long to see Pope Pius XII canonized instead of all these modern popes who have ruled over our dwindling Church and created so much confusion.

A Modest Proposal for the March for Life: Move it to the Right Anniversary!

As tens of thousands prepare to participate in the annual March for Life with a record-breaking snowstorm predicted for the area, I can't help thinking we keep shooting at the wrong target. Yes, Roe v. Wade was an atrocity, but it was only the bitter fruit of an ugly seed -- Griswold v. Connecticut.

An astute friend of mine said years ago that we were never meant to march in the dead of winter on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, January 22nd; that, instead, we should be marching on the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, June 7th (1965). Why that decision? Because Griswold enshrined the "right to privacy," removed restrictions on the sale of birth control to married couples, and set in motion acceptance of abortion on demand as a personal right, as well as sowing the seeds for death on demand by euthanasia.

When Christ's Church Becomes a Social Hall

My husband and I decided to attend Mass this past weekend at the parish up the road, St. John the Baptist in Front Royal. I like to go to Confession there because both priests give encouraging direction during the sacrament that always makes me reflect more deeply on my own spiritual condition. And they are obviously in demand because both lines are continuous during the entire hour and sometimes beyond. Long lines aren't the result of long confessions either. When I got in line there were about eight people in front of me and I waited about 20 minutes. I estimate the priests hear between 50 and 75 Confessions on Saturday afternoon. The parish also offers the sacrament every day after the morning Mass as well as the "Welcome Home" program of evening Confessions on Wednesdays. What a blessing for those parishioners!

Two thumbs up for the Nebraska Bishops who recently came out with a statement on student participation in sports urging the Nebraska Schools Activities Association (NSAA) to support a policy that children participate in activities according to the sex listed on their birth certificates. Frankly, it's just common sense. Why should boys who generally have greater size and strength be allowed to participate in girls' sports. It's unfair to the girls who work hard to excel to have to compete against boys. How many girls could beat a 6'2" guy (like Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner) in a layup playing on the girls' basketball team? And what kind of injuries could a guy in a girl's uniform do to his opponent on the girl's wrestling team? Somebody needs a reality check!

When Princess Diana died suddenly and tragically in an auto accident in 1997, Mother Teresa and her fellow nuns held an overnight prayer vigil for her. While the secular world canonized Diana instantly, Mother Teresa responded more realistically and more charitably, with prayer and sacrifice. Salvation is not guaranteed to anyone and Diana's past and present offered no assurance of her readiness to face the personal judgment. The Tabernacle Isn't Just a Piece of the Furniture!

And by 2018, all the church's in his diocese will move the tabernacle back where it belongs -- in the center of the sanctuary. Praised be to Jesus Christ and two thumbs up for Bishop Morlino!

And two thumbs up to the pastor of St. Louis Catholic Church in Alexandria, VA. St. Louis was our family parish for over thirty years. During that time we grieved to see the tabernacle moved to a tiny side altar. In the latest renovation, the current pastor, Fr. Matthew Zuberbueler, moved Jesus back where he belongs to the center of the Church.

When a worshiper enters a Catholic Church, there should be no question about its purpose, the honor and glory of God especially in the Real Presence of His Son here on earth. The larger "house of the Lord" is only there for the worship of the one who dwells within the little golden house on the altar. Thank you, Bishop Morlino and Fr. Zuberbueler. May other bishops and clergymen follow your example to make the house of the Lord a fitting place for worshiping the King of the Universe.

Are they truly refugees or is the massive infiltration of Muslims to the West a silent invasion, Al-Hijra in fact, i.e., taking over a country by immigration?

I read a head-shaking editorial in the Nov-Dec issue of Gilbert Magazine yesterday by Sean Dailey. It argued in favor of welcoming Syrian refugees saying that opposition is fueled by baseless fear of terrorism that is generating a "rage" unrelated to "clear thinking." According to the writer, "fear sees every desperate foreigner as a terrorist," while most are just individuals "fleeing horrific violence and oppression." He concluded his editorial by equating refugees with the holy family seeking shelter.

Is the Mercy of Pope Francis Filling Confessionals with Penitents?

Not according to an Italian priest who sent a letter to Sandro Magister at Chiesa. Some of its contents are heartbreaking to say the least. Is a "penitent" who reflects no sorrow for sin and has no firm purpose of amendment to avoid sin in the future making a "good confession?" I recommend you read the entire article and entire letter from the priest. I plan to make sacrifices today in atonement for the two "penitents" Father mentions and also for Pope Francis:

"The facts are these. Since the opening of the Holy Year backed by Pope Francis and on the occasion of the Christmas festivities of 2015 - as also since Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been sitting on the throne of Peter - the number of faithful who approach the confessional has not increased.... The trend of a progressive, rapid diminution of the frequency of sacramental reconciliation that has characterized recent decades has not stopped. On the contrary: the confessionals of my church have been largely deserted. 

Sunday Meditation: Is the Mass "Very Long and Tiresome" for You?

I found this quote from Chesterton today on a link from a blog I often visit. It set me to thinking about my own Mass experiences.

My husband and I go almost every day. I doubt if we miss Mass more than a dozen weekdays every year. I don't say that to boast; it is more a necessity to preserve me from being one more casualty of Satan's wiles. Daily Communion is as necessary to me as eating. I once read that perhaps those born into the Catholic church are given that grace because they are the ones most likely to be lost without the graces that come through Holy Mother Church. Knowing the potential for evil in myself, I believe it.

Our Visit to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Well, I've accomplished my first resolution of the new year. On Monday we traveled with our youngest daughter and her three little children to the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Considering it takes us two hours to get there, the children were incredibly well-behaved in the car, even the 21-month-old. And nobody took a nap!

We started our pilgrimage in the crypt church with the noon Mass which included Christmas carols. The shrine cafeteria was closed so we "lunched" on junk food from the vending machines before going upstairs to walk through the Jubilee Door of Mercy.

Ordinary Duties as we Approach Ordinary Time

The past few days I've found myself immersed in the ordinary duties of family life. After a week of a dozen house guests coming and going, I've been changing beds, doing laundry, putting away the punch bowl and party plates, cleaning out the refrigerator and making soup and freezer dishes from leftovers, picking up stray toys (I keep a stash for the grandchildren), and generally "redding up" as my West Virginia husband always says.

I actually like to fold laundry. Since my children were young I've made it a practice to pray for those who will wear the clothes, sleep in the beds, use the towels, etc. Today I've also been praying to St. Anthony that all the items in the Camp Kreitzer lost and found will return to their rightful owners.

St. John Neumann, Pray for Us!

If you aren't familiar with St. John Neumann, fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, please remedy the situation at once. What a great saint! He himself was an immigrant to the United States where he exhausted himself in service to God's people. A gifted linguist, he was the perfect priest to be sent to America where multiple immigrant people often had no priest who could speak their languages. Neumann, on the contrary, was fluent in six languages including Italian and taught himself Gaelic so he could hear the confessions of the Irish immigrants in the coal-mining region of Pennsylvania who had no English.

St. John began as a diocesan priest, but desired the fellowship of community life and later entered the Redemptorists.

Sunday Meditation: Will You Be a Star or a Roadblock?

At Mass this morning, Father challenged us to be "stars" to those in our lives who are seeking the truth. People look to many "stars" in the world: rock stars, sports stars, TV and movie stars. But how many seek the only stars that really matter: those who lead us to the light and the truth.

The Three Kings dropped everything to follow the star and it was no small feat. We don't know how far they came, but scripture certainly gives the impression it was a great distance. St. Jean Vianney tells us they left everything, faced the ridicule of their own peers, and willingly accepted the challenges of the journey.

My Second New Year's Resolution: Pray for Our Military Living and Dead!

Watch this lovely tribute to the veterans of World War II. My dad, a navy ensign at the start of the war who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, was one. Son of a church organist and a musician himself (Daddy played the organ for the Catholic services at the Naval Academy when he was a student there), he would have loved this. And so I dedicate this to my dad and all those brave men and women who served in World War II and for all those who continue to serve. I resolve to pray for them at Mass and when I say my rosary during 2016. "No greater love is there than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." May we all pray for peace during 2016, the peace that comes through loving God, loving our neighbor, and doing the duties of our states in life with the help of Jesus through Mary.

Happy New Year and My First Resolution of 2016!

To make a pilgrimage to the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception this week walk through the door of Mercy, say the twenty decades of the rosary there, pray the consecration prayer to Mary in the Blessed Sacrament chapel, and seek the intercession of all the saints and angels for a year of grace and mercy from the Lord. And, of course, I will be offering everything for the love of Our Lord, for all my family and friends, for the conversion of sinners, and in atonement for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
