Yikes!

I opened a can of worms with a brief statement on my Facebook wall Sunday night:

Went to a drive in Mass in Front Royal this evening and received my Lord and Savior on my knees. Thank you, Jesus. Thy will be done.

The incredible uproar began!

One gentleman accused me of being in mortal sin for disobeying the bishop. (More on that below.) A fellow blogger said I was committing serious scandal and demanded I take down the thread because the Mass was offered by a priest of the SSPX. Another ranted that I was willing to endanger and even KILL people.

A number of years ago, I read of a macabre Mafia practice, whereby arrangements were made to have an enemy seduced, so that he could be murdered in the act of fornication. In this way, it was thought that he would not only be killed, but also, having been denied any opportunity to repent, he would be eternally damned.

Over the past half century, a similar but even more sinister practice has come to be viewed as acceptable and even noble by a large number of Catholics. The practice they have endorsed as tolerable, or even noble, is the deliberate denial of innocent babies the right to be baptized. Specifically, they have bought into the agenda that it is a form of “social justice” to kill pre-born babies, and thus to deny them the ability to be baptized.

I picked these daffodils yesterday from a little patch in the bed by my driveway.  They are among the very few I continue to grow out of several hundred varieties I grew about 15 years ago, when I maintained a collection of “novelty daffodils” for competition in daffodil shows, sponsored by local societies across the country and in the annual national show held by the American Daffodil Society in a different city each spring.  These blooms are by far not the most impressive flowers I ever grew, but I treasure them nonetheless and here’s why. 

The registered name of this flower is ‘Roberta Watrous 7Y-GYP’.  All show flowers must have either a seedling # assigned by the hybridizer or a name officially registered with the Royal Horticulture Society in London, England to be judged on a show bench.  This flower was named by a woman in Indiana to honor a well known daffodil grower and miniature hybridizer, Roberta Watrous, who lived in Washington, D.C.  Many thought then, and probably even now, it was a pitiful choice of flowers to name for someone so renowned in the daffodil world, a celebrity, as it was, on three continents.  But, the RHS doesn’t argue merits, it only accepts names and codes as they are presented and if they are unique, since no two flowers can bear the same name. 

Sunday Meditation: O Jesus, Sweet Infant of Prague, Have Mercy on Us!

I've received several emails suggesting putting the image of the Divine Mercy on the door. What a  good idea, I thought. So I pulled out my fat file of holy images and began leafing through its contents to see if I had a poster of the Divine Mercy image. I stopped short when I came to the sweet image of the Infant of Prague holding the world in his hand. Then and there I decided He would be the one to greet all who came to our door.

The story of the devotion is very appropriate to this difficult time. Here's a short summary from that wonderful biographer of the saints, Ann Ball:

In 1556, Maria Manriquez de Lara brought a precious family heirloom, a statue of the child Jesus, with her to Bohemia when she married the Czech nobleman Vratislav of Pernstyn. The statue of the child is eighteen inches tall, carved of wood, and thinly coated with wax. The left foot is barely visible under a long white tunic. The statue stands on a broad pedestal, and there is a waist-high silver case which holds it upright. The left hand holds a miniature globe surmounted by a cross, signifying the worldwide kingship of Christ. The right hand is extended in blessing in a form usually used by the Supreme Pontiff; the first two fingers are upraised to symbolize the two natures in Christ, while the folded thumb and last two fingers touch each other to represent the mystery of the Holy Trinity....

When sins are collective, chastisements are collective. Why wonder at the deaths brought on a nation, when governments are guilty of homicidal laws like abortion, and during the epidemic the slaughter continues to have a preferential way? As we see n Great Britain, where the government has even authorized “abortion” at home, so as not to interrupt the carnage during the Corona Virus! And when, instead of bodies, souls are hit, why be surprised that the loss of faith is the chastisement for those responsible? The refusal to see the hand of God behind the great catastrophes of history is a symptom of this lack of faith.

I wonder how many people live in perpetual darkness in a state of mortal sin. How many approach for Communion every Sunday after a week of immersing themselves in pornography or engaging in sodomy, contraception, fornication, adultery, theft, slander, scandal, etc. -- all the seven deadly sins. 

How many then, in their rationalization, professing to be "devout Catholics," betray Jesus like Judas with the kiss of sacrilege?

Yesterday, Fr. Tom wrote cogently about Our Lord saying "No Mas!" I thought of that today as I prayed the Mass at St. John Bosco in front of the tabernacle using St. Jean Vianney's 14th Eucharistic Meditation on "Unworthy Communion" as my "homily." Sobering indeed and a warning to those who dare to profane Christ with sacrilegious Communions.

The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. is closed to the public until further notice says their website.  You cannot  even  visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament!

Fr. Tom sent this comment accompanying the article below: "I could not help but notice how the denial of access to the sacraments due to the current COVID-19 crisis could be seen as a divine “No mas”, due to decades of capitulation to moral and liturgical abuses. Pray that all of us may be graciously blessed with sincere conversion based upon a renewed commitment to be faithful and accountable to the whole truth of God." All I can say is Amen to that! Pray for restoration of the Holy Mass!

I'll be honest. I'm tired of being told how unprecedented the situation with the coronavirus is. Are we hearing this because people are totally ignorant of history? The 1918 Spanish Influenza epidemic infected a quarter of the world's population at the time and killed millions including Jacinta and Francisco Marto, the seers of Fatima.

It was an HiNi virus like the swine flu and there were no antibiotics at the time to handle secondary bacterial infections. A big difference in that pandemic from today's was how hard it hit the little ones and those in the prime of life with the highest death toll among those younger than five, age 20-40, and the elderly over 65. It seems the Lord has cast a net of protection around the least ones, so abandoned in this evil age.

I'm not particularly afraid of the coronavirus despite the fact that I'm high risk. I'll be 73 next week, I have an autoimmune disease, and I'm blood type A which has been shown to be more susceptible to the virus.

My husband and I are exercising prudence with frequent hand washing, cleaning surfaces, avoiding unnecessary exposure to large groups, etc. But panic is not an option. What good does that do? Good grief, I lived through the cold war with bombing raid practice in school and I survived the polio epidemic, measles, mumps, etc. I don't believe this is Armageddon. Although I do believe it's part of the chastisement.

As for those panic-stricken folks emptying the shelves of supermarkets, well...I just shake my head. I'm buying less and using this as an opportunity to empty my freezer and my pantry. I'll leave the Doritos and ice cream for others. After all, it's Lent. I refuse to act like shoppers on Black Friday fighting over....a package of toilet paper.

But one thing does scare the daylights out of me! The tyranny of government officials who are using this as an opportunity to flex their muscles. Some of the brown shirts are essentially putting their citizens under house arrest for the crime of possibly becoming a carrier and spreader of the coronavirus.

Some members of the media have called Clyburn a kingmaker for his endorsement of Joe Biden for president.

I've been checking out information for fighting the coronavirus in a natural way. I don't claim any particular medical expertise, but most of the sources I've been reading are doctors.

Of course your own medical professional is the best source of advice for your particular situation. (Or at least he or she may be. As my somewhat cynical dad used to say, "They call it the practice of medicine because they're practicing on you!")

I'm sure many people are already taking Vitamin D and Vitamin C as immune  boosters. That's an absolute given. In fact, as this article points out, the quarantines may backfire if people don't get out in the sunshine. Consider the folks on the cruise ships restricted to inside cabins for weeks! No wonder so many got sick!

Have no fear, little flock -- not even against the plague!

There’s no doubt about it! In the Sunday night Democratic debate with Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden committed to selecting people for jobs on the basis of their race or sex. This is quintessential racism and sexism.

Soon there will be no Public Masses anywhere! Pachamama is laughing!

Arlington just joined the Mass ban. Here is the list of places suspending public Masses as of now. Soon we will be completely bereft and orphaned.

And how did it come to this?

Consider.

On October 4th immediately before the opening of the Amazon Synod on October 6th Pachamama was carried in honor into the Vatican garden where she was worshiped and venerated. Only two days laters reports came out that Sr. Agnes, the seer of Akita, had received a message from her angel that the chastisement was imminent warning us to repent. Over the next few days and during the whole of the Amazon Synod, Pachamama appeared in various churches honored and extolled. Worshipers bowed to the idol even in front of the tabernacle. Devotees paraded her during the Stations of the Cross and processed her into the synod hall carried by members of the hierarchy.

What? You think I'm a misogynist?

I once had a conversation in the parking lot with a fellow parishioner. She's blunt and a bit crusty and I like her all the better for it. She lamented that we don't have altar girls. I disagreed saying there were too many women in the sanctuary already. Testily she responded, "You're a misogynist!" and stomped off. I laughed. It's the first time anyone has ever accused me of that. I know what the word means, but I looked it up anyway. The definition is even stronger than I thought:

misogynist: a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women.

Me a misogynist? Not hardly!

Yesterday I saw a woman in a shop wearing a face mask, blue latex gloves and a cloth raincoat (the sun was shining) buttoned up to her chin. There was no chance a COVID-19 bug was going to enter her system. 

On purpose - to test her sincerity - I sidled up next to her and coughed while pretending to look at a few articles on a shelf. If she truly had been scared of getting the virus, she would have scrambled away from me, but she just stood there and continued to shop. So much for being afraid of getting Coronavirus, even though she was dressed to the nines in protection gear. I think she was wearing "all that stuff" to get attention, much like Western women suddenly dressing in hijabs wanting others to think they are Islamic. It's for attention.

I'm not afraid of getting CV. Why? Because exactly two - TWO! - people in the entire state of Florida have (sadly) died from it. Out of 23 million people living in Florida, there are 46 confirmed CV cases, and out of those 46 people, only 2 have died. So my chances of expiring from CV look slim to none.

Gratitude: A Great Virtue for Lent and Every Day!

I read an article this morning on gratitude which reminded me of a Chesterton quote. We say grace

before meals to thank God for the food we eat. But here's what Chesterton said:

Abortion will end -- perhaps not in my lifetime -- but it will end. And the reason is people like  Melissa Ohden and Gianna Jessen and a young man I heard call in on the Chris Plante radio show and many others. They are the voices of the voiceless unborn. They are the faces of the faceless unborn. They are the abortion survivors. Some actually survived the abortion procedure. Others survived because their moms in difficult situations chose life rather than the siren song of the death peddlers.

In those days, schools acted in loco parentis and actually protected the virtue of their students by keeping dorms separate and having strict visitation rules.   The post following this introduction is an email I received from friend and Wanderer journalist Dexter Duggan. Dexter wrote to me responding to yesterday's Sunday meditation on slander and righteous anger. He's experienced slander first hand from a Catholic historian who, by all common sense standards, should be an ally. Some readers may recall my posts relating the story of Dexter's abuse by Dr. James Hitchcock in his book, Abortion, Religious Freedom, and Catholic Politics. (See here and here.)

Indeed, Dexter knows what it is to be falsely accused, slandered, and vilified. He knows what it is to have your reputation continuously damaged by falsehoods published in a book used on Catholic college campuses across the country. He knows what it is to be defamed over and over on EWTN and in Catholic interview shows promoting the slanderous book. Hitchcock's refusal to correct the mistakes and defamation reflects more on him than on Dexter. And what it says about him is anything but complimentary to a man professing to be a faithful Catholic.

What possessed Dr. Hitchcock to attack Dexter and The Wanderer in the first place is beyond me. That he refuses to correct his errors and apologize for the slander certainly doesn't demonstrate a humble Catholic mind and heart (that the Lord "will not spurn"). It shows a pride and arrogance that is rather frightening to see in an aged man on the cusp of eternity.

I've was walking around my house a few days ago so angry I couldn't sit down. If I could spit fire, it would have spewed out of my mouth white-hot -- lighting up every combustable item nearby! Ever since childhood I've hated injustice, and too many times I've seen the liars and demons go after good priests and kill their vocations.

US archbishop bans Communion on tongue, claims it’s ‘not crucial’ how Catholics receive

How many liberal bishops like Wester will use the coronavirus as a pretext to ban Communion on the tongue and demand parishioners receive in the hand?

Well...how many bishops enabled the sex abuse scandal with coverups and moved abusers around? I expect to see more liberal bishops follow Wester.

One good thing is that he can hardly ban Communion in the hand without banning Communion under both species. How can he claim putting the host on the tongue is a risk while allowing a communal cup to be passed from mouth to mouth? I wish that practice would disappear forever! Intinction yes, communal cup with hordes of LEMs (lay extraordinary ministers) NO!

Goodness, a bishop is showing some common sense about the risk of contracting the coronavirus from the reception of Holy Communion on the tongue.

As the article points out, the risk of contracting the virus is equal regardless of how the communicant receives and actually the hands are more likely to be germ ridden. I have no intention of changing my practice and will receive on the tongue when I go to Mass. 

Topsy and Tuptim Discuss Querida Amazonia Part III

Topsy and Tuptim just finished planting three dozen daffodil bulbs in random spots at Sacred Heart of Jesus cemetery. They stack all their gardening implements in a bin and stow it in the back of Topsy's Yukon. Topsy retrieves a picnic basket with a thermos, cups, and sandwiches which they take to a bench in the baby garden.

Topsy: (Filling a cup with coffee and handing it to Tuptim...) I love to sit in this section of the cemetery with all the little baby saints. They died in their innocence. What powerful intercessors they must be for all of us, such humble little ones resting in the arms of Our Lady. One of my grandchildren who died before birth is buried here. A precious little one I look forward to meeting some day.

Vincenzo Zani, secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, is organizing the Global Compact on Education, originally scheduled for May, but now delayed until October because of the virus.  He says the meeting was initiated "also" by the other monotheistic religions, Judaism and Islam, but will include participation of other religions and groups like the U.N.'s UNESCO. UNESCO's goals, advertised on Twitter, include gender equality, clean water, sustainable cities, and climate action.

Birth of a Virus   

My husband and I listened to a dystopian novel on our recent trip to Surry, VA. Reading the article above about China's reaction to the coronavirus reminded me of the book: the draconian treatment of the people by "the authorities," the complete lack of respect for individual rights, the abject cruelty.

The article linked above tells the story of a man who went with his wife to China to adopt a baby. He describes the filth they saw and the way they saw people live -- children in split pants urinating in the street creating puddles, people spitting on the floor in restaurants, the markets with raw skinned and bloody chickens lying on the floor waiting to be thrown on the grill. Here's a bit from their experience:

...my wife and I had to rush our newly adopted, 8-month-old daughter to the public hospital…and suddenly it all started making sense.

At any rate, in my meanderings this morning I came across a short article about a psychologist's one piece of advice to his colleagues. That advice was "live below your means." The title stopped me short. What are the benefits of "living below your means?" There are two big ones that are worth thinking about during Lent.
