University: Community of Family or Community of the Barnyard?

I just read an insightful 2005 article by Ruth Lassiter titled The Role of the Shadow Curriculum in Achieving the Pax Academica. You can read the complete article in The Catholic Educator Vol. 51 Winter 2010. 

What underlying message, in addition to academics, does the university community send to the young people in its care? What is their "shadow curriculum?" The excerpt below describes what students experience on most college campuses today, sadly even Catholic ones:

The New Abortion Argument: Untermenschen

From Wikipedia:

Untermensch (German for under man, sub-man, sub-human; plural: Untermenschen) is a term that became infamous when the Nazi racial ideology used it to describe "inferior people", especially "the masses from the East," that is Jews, Gypsies, and Slavic peoples including Poles, Serbs, Belarusians, Russians and Rusyns.

This morning I was reading an article by Brian Clowes, research director of HLI, about the new abortion strategy. The pro-aborts recognize they've lost the life battle. Everybody knows the baby in the womb is a human life. Ultrasound is so extensive now that the window into the womb clearly shows a fully human baby just waiting to be born. So the Planned Parenthood extremists are coming out of the closet. Faye Wattleton, past president of Planned Parenthood summed it up succinctly when she said, "I think we have deluded ourselves into believing that people don't know that abortion is killing. So any pretense that abortion is not killing is a signal of our ambivalence, a signal that we cannot say yes, it kills a fetus."

The "ambivalence" Wattleton describes is coming to an end. Clowes quotes Ann Furedi, head of chain of abortion mills in England:

We can accept that the embryo is a living thing in the fact that it has a beating heart, that it has its own genetic system within it, it's clearly human in the sense that it's not a gerbil and we can recognize that it is human life, but the point is not when does life begin but when does it begin to matter.

Wow! Clearly Furedi believes babies waiting to be born are untermenschen, "inferior people" whose lives don't matter.  But they aren't the only expendable ones. Already born babies are also untermenschen to abortion advocates. Recently a Planned Parenthood lobbyist testified against a Florida born alive bill that would mandate treatment for babies who survive abortions. After all, the mom doesn't want it, the doc tried to kill it, and being born shouldn't make any difference to accomplishing the objective -- a dead baby! After all, some people are worth more than others. And babies in the womb and even out of the womb are just untermenschen. When do they move up the ladder to be fully human? Well that all depends. If you're a Jew or a Slav or a gypsy in the Third Reich -- NEVER. If you're a "cockroach" (Tutsi) in Rwanda's civil war -- NEVER. And for Planned Parenthood, if you're an "unwanted" baby -- NEVER! Abortion at any time before birth and post birth as well! After all, they're just untermenschen.

Pope Francis Makes First Two Episcopal Assignments for U.S....

...and both men were ordained for the Diocese of Lincoln, which seems to me to be an excellent sign. Bishop Bruskewitz was surely one of the most orthodox bishops in the country and one especially reviled by liberals.. The one time I met him, at a fundraising dinner, I also found him to be charming and humble. The two new episcopal assignments are:

Bishop Michael Jackels, current of bishop of Wichita, is being sent to Dubuque.

Msgr. John Folda, currently the rector at the Lincoln seminary, is going to Fargo, North Dakota.

It is interesting to see that his first two American assignments are going to men ordained for one of the most orthodox dioceses in the nation. It will be interesting to watch how these assignments are greeted by Am-church. Read more here.

The Catholic Twilight Zone

Couldn't agree more with Mike Voris on this. In my own diocese the same thing happened in previous years to both kids and adults. Once, my own former pastor, Dominic Irace, refused Communion to a Virginia State Delegate, Dick Black, when he knelt for Communion at the cathedral. So a kneeling politician gets it, but the sacrilegious pols have no problem at all. Well, I'm happy to say that, as far as I know, this no longer happens in my diocese. Several people in my own parish kneel for Communion. When I go to Mass at St. John the Baptist in Front Royal the priest gives Communion at the altar rail (Yes, some churches still have them.) and Communicants can either stand or kneel. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all churches would offer the option. All it would take is a prie-dieu in ONE Communion line to give parishioners the option.

Some people may look at me as hypocritical because I am pro-life. This is because on the day I turned 19, I had an abortion. 

I was about five weeks along when I took the RU486 pill. I was a young, naive girl who thought partying and fooling around had no consequences – much like many teens believe. I was in my freshman year of college at an out-of-state university which my parents were paying big bucks for me to attend. 

I came home for Christmas break, and my mother was adamant about me meeting her friend’s son, so I did. I met him, and we partied together, and had sex a few times. One of those times being without a condom. After all, there were no consequences for me. Read more here....

The Letter below from Virginia State Delegate Bob Marshall illustrates clearly why he is considered the conscience of the legislature. Governor Bob McDonnell has been a big disappointment, particularly in view of his Catholic faith. That this amendment betraying the unborn should be added by a Catholic governor is pitiful. St. Thomas More, patron of politicians, pray for him.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has offered a highly flawed amendment to HB 1900 and SB 921 governing insurance coverage in Virginia which I cannot support.  Instead, I will vote “present” on the Governor’s abortion Amendment at the April 3 reconvened session in Richmond.

What Would Jesus Eat?

I'm reading an interesting book about the way the French eat and why we're fat and they aren't despite a diet filled with butter, real cream, delicious breads and wine at lunch and dinner. The answer, according to the author, is that they eat real food while we stuff our faces with faux food filled with: artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, etc. Some pre-packaged foods aren't too bad. Take the Kellogs raisin bran I ate this morning. The ingredient list includes: whole grain wheat, raisins, wheat bran, sugar, brown sugar syrup and less than 2% salt and malt flavor. Compare that list to Post's Honey Bunches of Oats: corn, whole grain wheat, sugar, whole grain rolled oats, brown sugar, rice, high oleic vegetable oil (canola or sunflower oil), whet flour malted barley flour, salt, corn syrup, whey (from milk), honey malted corn and barley syrup...here's where it gets interesting...caramel color, natural and artificial flavor, annato extract (color), BHT added to packaging material to preserve product freshness.
