Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P. responded to a gay priest's article in the New York Times describing the priesthood as a "cage" with a powerful rebuttal in a series of Tweets:
“I have no patience for priests who ‘come out’ as gay and insist the priesthood is some sort of cage. Nobody forced you to become a priest. The faithful don’t need to deal with your issues, pal. They don’t deserve to deal with any of our issues. We serve them. Period.
“Priests who insist they ‘can’t be who they are’ in the priesthood mean to say ‘who they are’ isn’t a priest as the Church has ‘always’ understood priesthood. The last thing the faithful need are priests who make their sexuality their primary identity.
“‘Being gay’ and ‘coming out’ may seem to you, Father, as being true to your authentic self, but that’s contrary to your ordination, which makes your authentic self a person in persona Christi in the service of the people of God.
“If you can’t live that way, if you can’t give yourself freely, without making your sexuality “a thing” in this equation, then be a man, be noble, and as our Holy Father Pope Francis says: leave the priesthood.
“The same is true, btw, of any priest who finds himself engrossed and completely distracted by the attention and subtleties of the fairer sex. If your priesthood is about being with women you’re attracted to, your thoughts and language always sexual, you’ve got a problem.
“A Father cannot help his children if he’s a broken distracted mess of a man requiring them to pick him up and set him aright. That’s the classic role reversal of a dysfunctional family. It has no place in the priesthood and the Church.”
Fr. Petri is clearly a true son of St. Dominic (my confirmation saint). May his tribe increase!
I think Fr. Petri’s message to sodomite Priests is really gaining traction. The sodomites thought a new day was dawning; Vatican II was coming to its climax and all things Catholic were being made new in their perverted image. Sexual bacchanal!
ReplyDeleteNo. They were simply being exposed as weeds for a time so that God could then burn the “tares” and harvest the wheat. This is happening, I do believe.
I would add to Fr. Petri’s admonition that this does not limit itself to Priests. We admire them for their iconic discipline in this matter, but they are not alone. We Lay men and women, married or not, are called to continence up to and including chastity. Everything we do, Priests and Laymen alike, must be for God’s glory. Whether it is eating, drinking alcohol, deserts, money and fancy things, use of our time .... sexual urges ..... all of it must be made to submit to the glory of God, first, middle and last.
Mary Ann , just wait till you read the document Francis put out at the end of the summit.
ReplyDeleteParents are the primary sexual abusers of children. Then we have relatives, teachers, strangers, neighbors and husbands of child brides and finally sadly some churchmen.
Talk about using deflection minus proportional stats for each group !
Damn those parents if they would just keep their mouths shut!
"The first truth that emerges from the data at hand is that those who perpetrate abuse, that is acts of physical, sexual or emotional violence, are primarily parents, relatives, husbands of child brides, coaches and teachers. Furthermore, according to the UNICEF data of 2017 regarding 28 countries throughout the world, 9 out of every 10 girls who have had forced sexual relations reveal that they were victims of someone they knew or who was close to their family."
What a deflection!! We won't have our attention taken away from the sin of sodomy no matter how many convenient stats he pulls up. SODOMY is the issue here. All acts of it. Forced or concensual.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet those 28 countries were Islamic. Loaded deck.
