On the fifth day of Christmas, I offer this beautiful gift from Bach, my favorite classical composer. Listening to a little Bach every day is guaranteed to make your season brighter. And what better time to do it than during the 12 days of Christmas! Enjoy listening as you read this brief excerpt from the Christmas Oratorio:
He came poor upon earth
Who can extol the love aright,
our Saviour chershes for us,
for that he pities us,
Yea, who is capable of comprehending,
how man's distress so moved him?
Make us rich in heaven,
The son of the All Highest comes into the world
because its salvation pleases Him so well,
and like unto His beloved angels,
that He will Himself be born as man.
Lord have mercy on us!
In D major, of course--the key of joy. Sprightly 3 beat (or 6), just like the music to the "Gloria Patri" of the Magnificat. The two (Magnificat and this Oratorio) are musically similar, too. JSB knew his theo!
ReplyDeleteI always find it sad to see Christmas trees piled next to the trash cans on the 26th. Even saw a newspaper letter where a neighbor was taking his Christmas lights down on Christmas Eve. Growing up we had neighbors who thought we were weird because our tree was up until the 6th. By the way I went to the grocery store yesterday and Valentine's Day candy was already visible.
