Of Motherhood and Spring and the Evil Lady Macbeth!

I've always loved the scene in Bambi about Spring arriving and all the creatures being "twitterpated!" I couldn't help thinking of that this morning as I watched a mama doe amble through the yard followed by a newborn, the littlest I've seen this Spring. We have deer in the yard every day and the does know Camp Kreitzer is a safe haven. They often leave their babies here while they go off to forage. Last year we had twins settled down on the side of the driveway just lolling in the sun. What a delight to go out and see them every morning.

Motherhood is in the air around the chicken coop as well. Pepper spent about ten broody days trying to hatch her sisters' eggs laid in the nesting boxes. We cured her with isolation and blocking the nesting boxes during the night. She is back to normal laying behavior.

But now Buttercup is in the mood. She's our Orpington and the most inclined to go broody. She gets very mean and aggressive preparing to protect her offspring. She is now in chicken jail and will stay there until freedom time late this afternoon. We don't let our chickens free range because of the foxes, but letting them out for few hours in the late afternoon has worked so far and no fox or hawk losses.

Most mother animals love their babies and will die protecting them. Our hens want to be mamas, a forlorn hope since we have no rooster. But that won't keep the broody chickens from trying desperately to hatch babies from unfertilized eggs.

Jesus recognized the love of mothers and compared His own love for us to that of a mother hen:

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children as the bird doth her brood under her wings, and thou wouldest not? Luke13:34

It grieves my heart to think that a hen or a mama bear or even an ant protects its babies and human mothers will often kill without a second thought. Adding to the horror are those who celebrate murdering their children. Like Lady Macbeth they call on evil spirits of murder and bloodshed to unsex them. Judy Densch illustrated the evil of ambition as Duncan arrives at her home.  Lady Macbeth calls on evil spirits to support her "foul purpose." How many feminist women embrace evil to the degree that they sublimate their feminine nature of love and compassion and turn it to evil? They are modern Lady Macbeths!

Of course, we know what happens to Lady Macbeth. She falls into insanity like so many who turn from God and commit their lives to Satan. And in my opinion a woman who chooses to unsex herself has a diabolical capacity greater than an evil man. She it is who convinces Macbeth to agree to the murder of the king.

Let us pray today for women, especially those who have unsexed themselves in order to quell the voice of guilt. Many women come to regret their abortions and become voices of hope and repentance. Let us always be available to offer hope. Those who have sinned much and repented are the loudest voices for truth. May we always encourage those voices and help to magnify them.
