Modesty, Especially at Mass: a Picture's Worth a Thousand Words; a Video's Worth 100,000

  1. I occasionally help usher at my parish, so I stand in the back of the church. I wish young women wouldn't wear tight slacks.

  2. What I liked best about this video is that the people represented our Catholic culture. They were dressed modestly and soberly. There was none of this African or Latino or Asian costuming. Our Catholic faith represents European culture. Just ask Pope Benedict. That is why he chose Benedict as his name—Saint Benedict is the Patron Saint of European culture. I am tired of hearing African or Asian or Latino music in Church or celebrating their “feasts.” Our Faith is a European faith and it has been our responsibility to bring that faith and culture to civilize the rest of the world. I went to a funeral recently of the mother of our housekeeper. It was at a Catholic Church in South East Washington DC. People came in the most outlandish costumes like they were form Nigeria or someplace. These are Americans. They have been here since slavery days, but they had all this “African American” music and were swaying and clapping in Church. I never saw anything like it! It was hardly respectful of Our Lord’s Presence in the Tabernacle. And the Mexicans in a neighboring parish have a mass with Mariachi music. It is like a fiesta or something. Like our pastor says, “Latin yes, Latino no.” I always wear a suit and tie to mass and I never let my children come to mass unless they are properly dressed—and that includes dresses and veils for the girls. I never permitted them to wear pants, even in the winter.

  3. Some sectors of our "melting pot" have not assimilated to this culture, which sprung through Western civilization. The CIC at the White House is one of them, which is why he supports the illegals.

  4. Bob, in all fairness to the young ladies, their slacks are so tight because they lack the material for a more proper fit. And where is that material going? It's going to young men's slacks that are 5-sizes-too-baggy so that they droop down and show their underwear. (A little satire, but you get the point)

These "proper dress at mass" things are only HALFWAY good, and I think you know where this is going. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Men of all ages must wear suit and tie and not look like they just crawled out of an alley after a brawl. The one video devoted only a few seconds to men, and even at that, the fellow had his sleeves rolled up and no jacket; that is NOT proper Mass attire.

  5. Well what do you expect from a “president” who is only one generation removed from the jungle, whose father was Muslim and whose mother was an atheist. Culture and Catholicism cannot be separated. We have a culture that was created by Catholicism and preserved in the monasteries of Europe for generations until Protestantism corrupted it. And nowhere is our culture better expressed in the Latin Mass with its beautiful music and ritual and art. That is why we need to preserve the Latin Mass—not as the “extraordinary form” but as the normative form of the mass. It is an essential building block, indeed the foundation, of civilization. God has used his Church to create this ritual which is “the most beautiful thing this side of heaven” to be a missionary tool to bring civilization to the backward peoples of the globe. And we for our part must treasure it too. That is why dressing properly for Church is so important. I agree with one of the other writers, that men must be careful about their appearance. At least a jacket and tie, if not a full suit is how men and boys should dress. And we need to make sure our shoes are shined as well. We owe God that much. thanks to all who work on this blog!!! you too are missioaries.

  6. The first video shows how seriously they take the idea of modesty at Mass in Philippines. I've attended Mass in three or four different parishes in Philippines and there is usually a poster (for lack of a better word) at the entrance of the church which illustrates proper attire for Mass.
Men need lessons in proper church attire as well though not for reasons of modesty. At my parish, I am the only man (other than ushers)who regularly wears a tie to church.

  7. thanks Patrick but being Catholic is not european it is Jewish cos it started with our Lord and His Mother,St Joseph and apostles etc who are all Jews, so the thing about Africa and thier feasts is that the Novus Ordo infiltrated into the church what the church preached againt. in Africa particularly where i come from, we have very very decent attires it is now that girls have started wearing european attires miniskirts, slack, jumpers, tubes thanks to tv,its even worse they now wear bikinis, so you see we are all suffering , i dont wear trousers, i stopped about ten yrs ago and never looked back,i am a traditional Catholic and because i am Catholic i appreciate the fact that when you are addressing God even an elder you dont back Him rather you give your back to the crowd whom you are representing or maikng intercession for and face whom you are talking to, in our African tradition when you address a King you dont turn and walk you reverse till you are ourt of his sight so you see we have some very beatiful traditions thathelp us to serve God and know Him better.God bless you always.mariaDolores
