This article explains pretty well why kids go off to university and turn into liberal zombies. They catch it from the professors of doublespeak who indoctrinate them in the hypocrisy of Orwellian doublespeak. No surprise really. In 2005 the Washington Post reported on a study that showed exactly how far out academia really is:
College faculties, long assumed to be a liberal bastion, lean further to the left than even the most conspiratorial conservatives might have imagined, a new study says.By their own description, 72 percent of those teaching at American universities and colleges are liberal and 15 percent are conservative, says the study being published this week. The imbalance is almost as striking in partisan terms, with 50 percent of the faculty members surveyed identifying themselves as Democrats and 11 percent as Republicans.
The disparity is even more pronounced at the most elite schools, where, according to the study, 87 percent of faculty are liberal and 13 percent are conservative....
The most liberal faculties are those devoted to the humanities (81 percent) and social sciences (75 percent), according to the study. But liberals outnumbered conservatives even among engineering faculty (51 percent to 19 percent) and business faculty (49 percent to 39 percent).
The most left-leaning departments are English literature, philosophy, political science and religious studies, where at least 80 percent of the faculty say they are liberal and no more than 5 percent call themselves conservative, the study says.

here. It addresses the charges and counter charges of both sides in the debate. If I had college-age kids today, I'd send them to community college for two years or a local university with them living at home. I'd also monitor the course selections to make sure they aren't taking "Graffiti as Communication" (a real course) or other nonsense. If you can afford to send your kids to a good solid Catholic school, few though they are, great. But if you need to depend on state options, a little parental mentoring in those first few years can be a great help to help kids survive intact against the relentless liberal propaganda so graphically illustrated at the University of North Carolina.
The president of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, Michael Galligan-Stierle, told The New York Times in January that students attending religiously affiliated colleges should have known what to expect. "No one would go to a Jewish barbecue and expect pork chops to be served," he said.
ReplyDeleteGalligan-Stierle was responding to the DEMAND made by a female student at Fordham University, a Jesuit college in New York.
Couple that with the fact that more than half of American Catholics say religiously affiliated colleges should be required to include birth control in health coverage.
My primary concern is not with secular universities and what happens there. You don't expect Catholic values to be taught at the U of NC. But, one ought to expect authentic, traditional, Catholic teaching and values should be presented unambiguously and courageously at Catholic Universities. Unfortunately, that is not always the case with examples too numerous to mention.
Add to that the very weak witness given by our hierarchy with their abysmal failure to discipline Catholic politicians in their sacrilegious reception of the Eucharist (with, dare I say it, interference provided by Canon lawyers) and the Catholic Church is far from its New Springtime.

So I read this article to say that the more educated one becomes, the more liberal one becomes. Guess that's why the conservatives are so ya-ya on homeschooling and isolationist practices.

In case you wonder who I define as a conservative, I take Russell Kirk's definition:
The conservative is a person who endeavors to conserve the best in our traditions and our institutions, reconciling that best with necessary reform from time to time. “To conserve” means “to save.”
Some things are worth saving even when their destruction allows the "progress" of building another shopping mall.
