Guest Post: This is a test, this is only a test… are we failing?

In whom do we trust? The "experts" with their failed models? 

Science has not made us smarter but more afraid. This over dependence on science has left us feeling extremely vulnerable. Our movement towards using science to verify all things, otherwise known as scientism, has very deep and established roots. One could trace that line of thinking back to the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve.

 An over simplistic understanding of science allows one to see for himself: to test, gather results and make conclusions.  This in and of itself is not necessarily bad. But using this method to the exclusion of faith in God leads us to exactly where we are at this moment in time.

Adam and Eve could not resist the temptation to put aside their natural trust in God and test what the serpent offered, to become like God. Remember they had physical interaction with God. And yet Adam chose to go it alone and not seek counsel from his Creator when faced with the serpent proposition. Their test, their sin, resulted not in more security but less! They put aside their faith and trust in Him and for what? Satan’s empty promises. They willingly gave up their true security. They lost their security and gained the knowledge of evil which in turn clouded their knowledge of true good. This is truly an example of the axiom, “sin makes you stupid.”  

Please do not misconstrue my words to say that human beings should entirely ignore science. Science has a role in our understanding of the natural world to improve our lives, to understand and appreciate the natural wonder thus giving more glory to God. Science, though, is not the end all, be all, last word on everything.

In times past, arguably the general public collectively were more faithful. Most acknowledged a Creator at the very least. Most people attended church services regularly. So their response to great tragedy was more along the lines of getting on their knees and rolling up their sleeves. Even many deaths from diseases or natural disasters resulted in very little panic. No long lines for toilet paper found. Why? I suppose because most people understood death to be the beginning of a new life in Christ. And since many more than today had faith in God and lived according Christian principals, there was hope in that death. 

I would imagine that many priests lost their lives in these difficult times in order to bring their faithful parishioners the sacraments and to minister to the dying. It brings to mind a warning from our dear Blessed Lord in Matthew 16:25, “For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it.” Makes me wonder if our Bishops even believe any of the words in the Bible.

Who is charge of our country? Not the one who was elected by the citizens, but a couple of lefty doctors who are relying entirely on science. They use the same failed models that drive so many bad political policies on so-called climate change. They talk of our vulnerability to this virus until we have a vaccine. Dr. Birx constantly speaks about how change in behavior will help bring this to an end.

 The irony in that statement is amazing. Yes, we, as a society, should change our behavior.  Our country should return to God. There is a promise from God which is the key to this whole chastisement found in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “And my people, upon whom my name is called, being converted, shall make supplication to me, and seek out my face, and do penance for their most wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.”  He is very clear here: conversion, sacrifice, penance, and seeking His face are required to initiate the healing. 

Paging all Bishops on earth: We need some leadership here. But again they are too busy planning their next TV appearance or their next appeal for donations. 2 Chronicles mentions nothing about masks, social distancing, or even hand washing but simply an acknowledgement of our evil ways and a return to God. (By the way, social distancing and hand washing are mentioned in other places in the Bible.)

Our collective lack of faith has led to our sole reliance on science. And this reliance has led to our overwhelming feeling of insecurity. If science can explain everything, why do we feel so vulnerable right now? Because like Adam and Eve hiding from God in the garden when they realized they were naked, we are following them and going it alone! 

Adam and Eve trusted in their own wisdom, not God's, and chose the world's way!

We are naked in the garden right now. We are running around in vain looking for security in pills or a vaccine or some social behavior change. How long until the Bishops fire up their forges and start clothing their flock with the Armor of God, with the Blood of Christ found in the sacraments?  (Can you see Adam and Eve doing a face palm and shaking their heads? I can.)
