The Song Running Through My Head This Morning: My God, My God, Why Have You Abandoned Me?

This hymn has been running through my head ever since yesterday. It started up again this morning, but the words are a little different: It's not "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?" Instead, the words are, "My God, my God, why have I abandoned You?"

It's a good question for Advent.

"The people in darkness have seen a great light." Why are we in darkness? Because we fail to let the Lord of life and light illuminate our darkness.

Why have I abandoned You, Lord, Who are the source and summit of everything? You are the source of my life, my every breath. Why and how have I abandoned You, my God?

What sins have caused me to turn my face away from Him to gaze in admiration at myself who can do nothing good without His grace?

I think it's time for confession.

Have you made an Advent confession yet? He's waiting to turn our darkness into light. What are we waiting for? Let's put confession on our calendars before Christmas. Even if you've gone already during Advent, one more would be an extra blessing and what it offers will be a Christmas gift that goes both ways, a gift of grace from Christ to us and a gift of love from us to God.

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee.
