On Our 54th Wedding Anniversary I Offer a Great Article on Marriage and Parenting

I wish I had been so smart when I was that age!

Dad Teaches Sons to Do Simple, Loving Acts for Mom Every Week, and It Changes Her Life:

A loving dad and his three young sons are showing the world the true impact of running regular errands for Mom.

Riverside, California-born Brooklyn Powell, 35, and her husband, Jonathan Powell, 36, live in their hometown with their four kids. When Mr. Powell, a business owner, took one of his wife's most challenging errands into his own hands one day, it was a game-changer for the overworked mom.....

  1. Happy Anniversary! May the day be blessed! My dear parents only made it to 48 years and they so wanted to make it to fifty. I will pray for your intensions as a part of my rosary today.

  2. Congratulations, and what a beautiful story! It can be done, and most young people today have such little idea that this is how to do it, with love and caring attention to the other.
Caring about the other, that is the way, and God and faith are critical. The commitment to the commitment, without which it is too easy to bail when times get tough, and they will. A happy marriage is a great blessing from God, but it does require loving effort and patience. It is deeply satisfying to accomplish it.
And what about those beautiful children! How adorable, the little towheads!
Many happy returns of the day to you both! God be with you always.

  4. From one who also got married in 1969, on June 14: Congrats to you both for the sacrifices you obviously made to make it this far. It certainly wasn't easy for us. As a matter of fact, I would venture to say that only by the Power of the Holy Spirit did we survive this long. We have five sons born in four different decades! 1060s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. I am very blessed to still have my dear wife Cecilia. A year ago she suffered a heart attack and stroke simultaneously! It was touch and go for quite awhile. My dear wife is a breast cancer survivor, has stage 4 kidney failure, and osteoarthritis throughout her body, especially in her knees(bone-on-bone for 35 years), and excruciating pain in both shoulders.
I won't go into it here, but our marriage was tested to the breaking point many, many times. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, and humor we made it this far. May yours and our marriage last until Death Do Us Part.

  5. Arthur,

Thank you for your good wishes. It is indeed a grace of God to persevere. Marriage is not easy and the vows to stick it out "in good times and bad for better or worse" are only possible, I think, by the grace of God as you say. I'm writing you and Cecilia's names on a holy card and adding you to my rosary box. I pray for everyone in the box every day in a general intention, but rotate through the cards praying for individuals each day. May God, indeed, help us to make it to the finish line with our sense of humor intact.

And Katie, Mike B., and Kathleen, I sincerely thank you for your prayers and good wishes. We had a lovely day yesterday going out to lunch and for a walk in the woods followed by ice cream. I joked that we were going to take a balloon ride, but we kept our feet on solid ground.
