What if All Those Who Love the Unborn and Had the Freedom to Do It Rescued?

I've been thinking about and praying for the Red Rose Rescuers (RRR) who are in jail with draconian sentences. They were all denied the right to put on a defense of necessity that justifies breaking a minor law in order to defend life or even property. It's the reason firefighters can break down doors to enter burning buildings or a good Samaritan can trespass to rescue a child or even a pet in danger.

In most cases, the motives of the defendants are part of the case. Not for pro-lifers. The kangaroo courts with their woke judges prohibit any defense that would make the baby visible. I was involved in a few dozen rescues several decades ago, but in only one did the judge allow us to introduce the necessity defense. I'm praying for him today. He allowed our expert witness, a pathologist, to present the humanity of the unborn. And he ruled on the evidence for life. He believed that we had a good faith belief that our actions were necessary to save life. Case dismissed! It never happened in court again. All evidence about the baby endangered by abortion was "irrelevant." The only question, were the defendants trespassing or not -- preordained guilty verdict.

In terms of sentencing, things are totally different from when I risked arrest back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. I went to jail in three different jurisdictions: In Alexandria for 24 hours, in Arlington for four days, and in Buffalo, NY for 24 days. If I were rescuing now, I would likely be in jail for the rest of my life. I did participate as a supporter in an RRR three years ago in D.C. After that I planned to be more active, but every opportunity ran into a snag. I saw that as God closing the door at that time. But what next?

Will there be a right time, a time I'm called to return to the front lines? That time is not right now, though. My pro-life work is to support my sister in the nursing home. My husband and I make a weekly treck to Frederick and back to see her. She's in seriously declining health, and is always eager to see us. But later, presuming I outlive her, will defending the babies on the front lines be God's call for me?

My husband and I are both in relatively good health for our age. I certainly would not risk arrest and imprisonment without his agreement and support, and God would have to give me a compulsion to do it which he did in my younger days. I'm old and tired and not very brave. But I ponder sometimes the words of Thoreau quoted above. We certainly live in an unjust society. It's a society that sends non-violent rescuers to jail for years and gives a free pass to those who torch our cities, injure police and firefighters, and destroy state and federal buildings. Kamala Harris even provided a bail fund for rioters so they could get out and rejoin the BLM/Antifa thugs.

I've always considered the little ones in the womb as the brothers and sisters of my own children. That hasn't changed. What has changed is that I'm old and tired. Maybe it is enough to pray and fast and witness. Is it? I'm confident that God will answer that question as I keep asking about it.

  1. God bless you Mary Ann for being such a good and faithful, longtime servant and advocate for the unborn. You by your example make me want to do more for this especially important cause.
And thank you for the reminder that being pro life means from conception to natural death! I visit my almost 90 year old dementia riddled dad every week in a subacute care facility. Many people who live there do not seem to ever have any visitors and appear to have been forgotten. It makes them come to life when you smile and say hello. It can be hard on one’s senses as aging can add lots of unpleasant sights and smells. I try to remember that despite years of wear and tear the person’s physical exhibit that they are that same individual who once had youth and beauty and vigor. The eyes really are the mirror to the soul 🙏🏼.

  2. I am pro-death penalty for all involved in abortion, including the so-called mother. But I'm not really pro-life. I coulsn't care less about the tar baby; I just believe a woman who would kill her own child should be punished by death herself.
