Pearl Harbor Day: Let's Remember Our Fallen Heroes and all Those who Serve

Pearl Harbor Day always brings thoughts of my dad who was a survivor of that horrific attack. He was on the U.S.S. Detroit and, as an ensign, was the ranking officer on board. He had just finished the duty watch and was going to bed when the shrill scream of the jets shattered the silence and bombs began exploding in the harbor. Obviously, nobody expected the attack on that early Sunday morning. The battleships, with their boilers down, were sitting ducks. Only two ships got out of the harbor that morning. The Detroit was one. They sent up plenty of fire power but the altitude fuses were locked up so it wasn't very accurate. Perhaps the Detroit was too little a fish for the Japanese to go after. Whatever the reason, they sustained no hits and no injuries. Thank God. My mom was pregnant with my oldest brother and had the Detroit gone down and Daddy been killed, I and my eight other siblings wouldn't be here. Nor would any of our children and many grandchildren.

Thank you, Lord, for protecting both my parents (and my brother) on that day and for getting Mom safely back to the mainland. And on this day of remembrance, please look gently on my dear mom and dad and welcome them into your glory if they are presently in Purgatory. "May the Divine Assistance remain always with us and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen."

On Slavery and the War between the States

I'm reading an interesting book on Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign. Since moving to the Valley in 2002, I'm fascinated by its history which attracted me to Stonewall in the Valley by Robert Tanner when I was browsing the shelves of our little independent library in Woodstock. Initially I just planned to look up all the entries on Woodstock, but when I read the first chapter I was hooked.

One paragraph that leaped out at me referred tangentially to slavery. It described Jedekiah Hotchkiss, the famous mapmaker of the Confederacy. If you've ever seen samples of his maps you were no doubt impressed by their accuracy. A satellite map can hardly compare. The man had a great gift for "seeing" the lay of the land. A few years ago, Larry and I saw a display of his work at Winchester's Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Wow! How could anyone on horseback with little opportunity for a bird's eye view make maps so detailed and so accurate? And to think it was a hobby. At any rate, Hotchkiss's profession was education and he began a number of schools in the Valley, the New Yorker's adopted home.

I haven't watched this yet and, obviously, it's from a Protestant perspective so it probably stresses the English settlement and may ignore the importance of the Catholic Spanish, but that can always be supplemented. I'm going to order it to have on hand for visiting grandkids. You only pay shipping and handling and there are lots of extras. Check it out! They have numerous videos on our American heritage and the political process. Let's face it, kids are being shortchanged in the public schools. Make sure they learn the truth about our Godly American past. We were founded as a Christian nation. Whether we still are is questionable, but the first step in building the future is remembering the past. Our children should be proud of their roots. Many of our families immigrated here for freedom of faith and freedom of opportunity. Let's help our children remember where they came from.

The Christian Foundation of our Country

Separation of church and state is a lie! The founders never intended faith to be banned from government. It was only a government established church that was banned because in England the monarch was head of the church and persecuted (and even killed) those who practiced another faith. Just read about the Catholic martyrs. Learn more about the religious foundations of America and stand up against the lies and distortions of the historical revisionists. Michele Bachman Was Right About the Founding Fathers

The mainstream media had a field day with Michele Bachmann's statement that our Founding Fathers worked to end slavery, but she was right. The Washington Times ran an editorial on July 1st with a long list of quotes from the founders calling for an end to slavery. Seems the lady knows her American history better than the media know nothings. Check it out here.

Wise Words from Washington (and I don't mean D.C.)

I've been reading a little book called Wit and Wisdom of the American Presidents. It's a collection of quotations and George Washington's are filled with solid advice that the current occupant of the White House would do well to follow. Of course we all know that we've never had anyone half as smart as Barack Obama sitting in the oval office. (Washington, of course, never sat there because it didn't exist.) Liberals never cease to inform us of Obama's absolute, unmatched brilliance, like presidential historian Michael Beschloss who claimed on Imus in the Morning (11/12/08) that "Barack Obama has the highest IQ of any President." Imus asked, "What's his IQ?" and Beschloss answered, "I don't know." So much for the research acumen of the "historian." As for the I.Q. test, it's only been around since the early 20th century. Last I checked we've had presidents since the end of the 18th. But actions speak louder than I.Q.s anyway.

Frankly, I care more about a man's M.Q., his moral quotient. Obama's actions so far, indicate his M.Q. is down in the basement: advancing sodomy, promoting murder of children, cannibalizing embryos, demonizing pro-lifers, claiming to be doing one thing while doing its opposite, etc. Compared to George Washington, Obama is an M.Q. idiot.

Here are a few words of wisdom from the General with my comments:

"Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire, called conscience."
Will Obama and the liberals in Congress destroy the conscience rights of doctors and other health care professionals?

"I hate deception, even where the imagination only is concerned."
Liberalism is grounded in deception.

"Few men have virtue enough to withstand the highest bidder."
Where did Obama's campaign millions come from?

"To contract new debts is not the way to pay old ones."
The "stimulus" package saddles our children and grandchildren with massive, unpayable debt. The entire wealth of the country cannot pay off what we currently owe and it is thanks to big government politicians, both Republican and Democrat. Obama, however, is raising the bar of deficit spending to heights we've never seen before in our history.

"Laws made by common consent must not be trampled on by individuals."
This is a totally alien concept to liberals who turn to the courts to legislate every time they fail to get what they want through legislation. Roe v. Wade is the classic example. Look for the ultimate overturning of Proposition 8 in California and the creation of same-sex marriage everywhere by court fiat.

"There is nothing so likely to produce peace as to be well prepared to meet an enemy."
In other words, have a strong army, but endeavor never to use it, another concept alien to liberals who generally "loathe the military." Traditionally throughout our history the military has been about 30% Catholic. Love of God and country are Catholic virtues.

"The tumultuous populace of large cities are ever to be dreaded."
"Flee the cities!" as Matthew 24 advises.

And finally, "Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains taken to bring it to light."

To speak the truth in charity is the duty of every Christian and, in fact, every person of good will. Jesus Himself is truth. Draw nearer to Him and, like Mary, let your soul magnify Him to an unbelieving and evil age. It may, and probably will, earn you hatred and persecution. Do it anyway. It will allow you, like George Washington, who may have converted to Catholicism on his deathbed, to say, "It is well I die hard, but I am not afraid to go."
