Flee the Cities and Experience Authentic Culture

Main and Court St. Woodstock, VA
What do I mean when I use the term "authentic culture?" It's pretty easy to explain. It means friendship, community, and shared life. Many times we experience that kind of community in our churches, although even there, some are so large you know only a fraction of the members who attend. But what about the secular community?

When I lived in Alexandria, I knew my neighbors. We lived on Lisbon Lane for almost thirty years and we had a number of neighborhood picnics and other events that helped us get to know one another. So we can all experience community on a small scale even in highly populated areas.

But after we moved to Woodstock, community and culture took on a much more personal aspect. We got to know more people in the community whom we see on many occasions: at the polls, at the grocery store, at the post office, at the ice cream parlor and restaurants. That rarely happened in Alexandria.

Flee the Cities for the Country Fairs

working on the perfect Snickerdoodle recipe for my entry

When I lived in Northern Virginia, I occasionally worked the Fairfax County Fair manning the pro-life table for Virginia Right to Life. Sometimes we were near the table for the gay clinic with their fishbowl filled with free condoms and tubes of lubricant. Being there was a penance; I did not enjoy it. And, of course, we got plenty of flack from pro-abortion fair goers. Now what did they find offensive about the fetal models and the video showing how the baby grows? Plenty of baby haters out there!

Flee the Cities!

This was the fourth shooting in Philadelphia near or on SEPTA buses in ONE WEEK!

Flee New York if You Value Your Life and Your Freedom!

It's not just taxes and high real estate anymore. Flee New York
before they kill you and your children or put you in COVID camps!

January 5th is a watershed day for the people of New York state. A number of bills will be introduced in the legislature that endanger the life and freedom of that state's residents. Let's look at a few.

This is NOT the Country I Grew Up In!

We are in a war between the diabolical forces of evil who want the destruction of all that is good and holy and those who embrace the law of God and follow the golden rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Flee the Cities, Especially Those Run by Democrats!

And it's not just San Francisco. Find a major city that's a total, almost unlivable disaster, and you can be sure it's a bastion of liberalism run by Democrats.

Wasn't There a Single Decent Person to Yell, "STOP?"

"A St. Paul, Minn., man is in a coma today, fighting for his life after a black mob beat him, stripped his clothes off and left him for dead. Even if he recovers, he will have permanent brain damage."

Man in coma after black mob of 50 pummels him

A young white man thinks he's safe living in a black neighborhood. And now he may die, but will definitely be permanently brain damaged. Where are the decent black men and women in these situations who demand thugs stop? If I saw a group of white guys beating up a black, I would try to stop them. Did anyone try to prevent this? Decency in the inner cities appears to be dead. No wonder Jesus said to "flee the cities."

"Flee the Cities!"

War Zones: As The Economy Dies, Murders, Shootings, Robberies And Looting Erupt All Over America
At the risk of being labeled a racist I'm going to point out the obvious about the two flash robbery videos at the link above. The convenience store robbery appeared to involve one white girl and a majority of male black teenagers. The robbery of the men's store appeared to be all black male teenagers. Whenever the mainstream media report on the number of minorities in jail, they generally imply it's because of racism. Maybe, just maybe it's because a higher percentage of minorities commit crimes relative to their numbers in the population.

But I wonder how much of the problem of rampaging black youngsters has to do with fatherlessness, a situation produced in large part by liberal government policies that destroyed the intact black family through insane welfare policies. Johnson's "great society" transformed a culture of mostly intact black families into a culture of single moms, many little more than children themselves, having babies out of wedlock. One of the biggest predictors for crime among black teens is the lack of dad in the home.

But not to worry, the equalizers are at work. The policy of no-fault divorce is at work now to do to the white family what was done to the black family. It won't be long before we see fatherless white males on the rampage as well. In the meantime, you'd be smart to follow the Biblical admonition to "flee the cities." Things are likely to get even worse as the economy continues to sink.

Bear break!

I love living in the country! Ever since we moved to the Shenandoah Valley we've had a continuous source of entertainment in our own yard. Deer wander through our field and nibble off the apple trees next to the house. A doe and her two small spotted fawns are regular visitors. We have an on-going contest with the resident groundhog to see who will get the most tomatoes from the garden. If we could train him to eat whole tomatoes instead of taking bites out of a dozen, we'd be satisfied. The hummingbirds engage in a continuous argument at the feeder over who will eat first. When we trade the hummingbird feeders for birdseed in a few weeks we'll have a wide variety of feathery friends coming to the window. The wildlife can even engage the grandchildren more than a video or computer game!
But yesterday was a real first for us. Our next door neighbor called at lunchtime to say there was a bear in a tree down the street. We hopped in the car along with three visiting grandkids and, sure enough, a few blocks from the town's "business district" was a little bear up a tree right in front of a house, only about fifty feet from the its front door. According to our neighbor a full-grown bear was hit by a car and killed last week and she guessed this might have been her cub. The little one was drawing a crowd and the poor thing looked frightened. Our four-year-old grandson, Ryan, immediately claimed the critter calling him "my bear."
A few minutes after we arrived the police came and shooed everyone off. We asked for St. Francis' intercession on the way home to lead the little beast to safety. Later my husband passed by on the way to an appointment and saw three police cars with officers standing around the tree scratching their heads about the situation. What does one do with an underage bear trespassing in a tree?
Well they must have figured it out because when my husband returned a few hours later the police and the bear were gone. We hope the little one got taken back up into the mountains. He was an adolescent, old enough to be on his own, but he certainly needs to be in a less tense environment.
Which brings me to a good point for Christians. When Jesus told his followers to "flee the city" he probably didn't have our bear in mind - but living in the country is surely a friendlier environment for the human species. If you want proof, talk to my grandchildren.
