Sunday Meditation: "We Are Catholics First!"

This morning we got to Mass early and I had a few minutes to read Anthony Esolen's article in Magnificat on Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, a great Catholic political figure of the mid 20th century. One incident in Adenauer's life occurred in 1933 after he was removed as mayor of Cologne by the Nazis. He applied to an abbey for prayer and rest. Adenauer, a critic of the rising German Reich and Hitler listened to the abbot, a friend, say, "Many of our monks disagree with you about Herr Hitler. German soil, German blood."

This was not a unique position among German clerics as Dietrich von Hildebrand relates in his great work, My Battle against Hitler. Sadly, many men in roman collars and other German Catholics defended the tyrant long after his evil plan was clear.

Adenauer wasn't one of them. He replied to the abbot, "We are Catholics first, Germans second."

Another Reason to Hate the Glory and Praise Hymnal

David Haas, How Catholic is he? Not very, folks.
Let's face it many Glory and Praise composers are about as Catholic as Pope Francis and that isn't saying much! But David Haas -- Yikes!

David Haas writes gay refrain for "pride month."

My colleague, Janet from Restore D.C. Catholicism, outed Haas and his dissent several years ago in Why I will never again sing anything by David Haas. The comments on her post are very revealing, both the positive and the negative. Of course, the negative comments accuse her being judgmental and filled with hate. That is the boring mantra of the liberal Catholic. Ho-hum...If you disagree with me and my liberal pro-gay, anti-orthodoxy, cafeteria values you are evil, hateful, a homophobe, a racist, a misogynist, a climate denier, a child abuser, judgmental...and ugly. Are you yawning?

The Reign of Terror at Providence College: When Catholic Schools Embrace Evil

What exactly is offensive about this?
[Sign the Petition to Providence College and please pass it on. Let's make this go viral!]

First they came for Professor Anthony Esolen... See The Wolves are Howling.

And now the barbarians at Providence College are threatening a Resident Assistant, senior Michael Smalanskas, with anal rape for daring to put up a bulletin board defending the Catholic doctrine that marriage is between one man and one woman!

Overcome the Darkness with the Light of Hope!

When you think the world's in twilight before dark
consider you may be seeing the coming dawn!
There is much these days to rob the most optimistic Catholic of hope. The dark clouds gather not only over our world and our country, but over the Church as well. When oppressive gloom begins to depress us, we would do well to remember the slogan of the Christophers: “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” And if we have eyes to see, that single candle illuminates signs of hope everywhere, because hope is higher and wider than despair. Let me share a few examples.

Anthony Esolen, the persecuted English professor who got into hot water with the diversity barbarians at purportedly Catholic Providence College, recently described an experience at his new academic home, St. Thomas More College in Merrimack, NH:

Progressives use faux social justice to advance liberalism and the welfare state..

Don't be confused. Social justice as defined by the Catholic Church is nothing like the progressives mantra of "social justice." For the liberal Catholic, social justice is synonymous with socialism and the welfare state. It includes forced redistribution of income, "charity" by government, confiscatory taxation, acceptance of abortion-on-demand, same-sex "marriage," radical environmentalism, gender insanity, "equality" through educational brainwashing, etc. It promotes a godless individual autonomy but only when that autonomy conforms to the progressive mindset. God forbid an individual wander off the liberal plantation and think for himself or dare to criticize the "right" to abortion or the "right" to same sex "marriage." Among liberal Catholics the way to "social justice" is through community organizing. It is almost exclusively focused on individual rights, but only to amass power for the organizer. The "social" or society aspect almost disappears.

True social justice from a Catholic perspective begins with the society of the family and recognizes other societies within the state that precede the state and often do things better than the state. Anthony Esolen puts it well:

Letters to Providence College about the Persecution of Anthony Esolen!

I'd like to post your letters to the president of Providence College (or his representative) about the persecution of Anthony Esolen. (Read the original article here.)  Copy them in the comments section below. Here are two samples, mine and a friends. Let's stand up for this great Catholic gentleman against the political correctness at Providence College! Interesting, isn't it, that on their website they call themselves PC. And they sure are!

The Demolition: How Did it Happen?

Anthony Esolen gives some insight in his article, There and Back Again.

I've been reflecting on this and on the collapse of the culture which is so far advanced and can only conclude that the underlying cause is the rejection of natural law.

Most people's eyes glaze over when you mention natural law. We've replaced it with "rights." We all have rights that not only allow free speech, free association, etc., but the right to create our own reality. The poster "girl" for the rejection of natural law is Bruce Jenner. Doesn't he have the right to decide he's really a she? Our culture says yes and those who disagree are gender-phobes.

Insanity Reigns on Campus!

More free speech here than on campus!
What a week! I still can't wrap my mind around the evil attacks in Paris. So I'll focus on our own insanity here.

On campus students are repeating the antics of the 60s. No, they aren't holding sit-ins at the administration buildings. They're using hunger strikes and manufactured injuries to get people fired and turn campuses into bastions of political correctness rather than institutions for rational discussion. I'm not sure these privileged lefties have a rational cell in their collective brain. (Yes, I know I didn't put an s on brain. There's only one -- the brain of the collective, the puppet master of the left.)

Anthony Esolen Gets It: Homosexuals are Made not "Born That Way"

From The Catholic Thing

In 1892, a theater-loving woman named Mabelle Webb moved to New York with her three-year-old boy, contemptuously dismissing the father of the child, a mere railroad ticket clerk. “He didn’t care for the theater,” she said, and she kept him from playing any role in her son’s life, refusing even his surname. She put the boy in the way of show business from the start, training him in music and dance. He left school at thirteen to enter the theater, eventually becoming a mainstay of Hollywood, playing characters similar to himself, sophisticated, condescending, and prissy. He was always her “little Webb.” Notoriously overbearing, she lived with him until her death at age 91. They were smotheringly close. After she died, he let his health go to ruin from grief. He had never married, but had carried on a discreet homosexual life, with mother’s complaisance.

Clifton Webb was born that way.

In 1934, an exceptionally handsome thirteen-year-old boy was haunting about a London cinema house, watching horror films. His happy home had been broken when he was young, by a working arrangement that kept his father in the city while the son was raised by his sister and his nanny, and later by an aunt. He was vulnerable, and a young medical student noticed it. After they watched a movie about a mummy, the student invited him back to his flat, saying that he could give him an experience of mummification, if he was interested.

The boy agreed. He wrote later in his biography that he did not then “know” what life was about. The student gave him a drugged drink, stripped him naked, and bound him in bandages and tape from his toes to his face, leaving only his genitals free. Then he took a cold knife and laid it across the genitals, whispering into his ear that he could kill him or mutilate him now, but of course he wouldn’t, that wasn’t what he wanted. The boy’s heart raced for terror. He thought he was going to die. The student had his way with him, untaped him, and let him put his clothes on and get lost. “At last I knew,” he wrote, thirty years later. He would never marry. He entered show business, and tried to have an affair with an actress or two, but it never lasted. Instead he settled into a life with another man.

Dirk Bogarde was born that way. (Read the rest here....)
