Almsgiving with a Clear Conscience: Don't Give to CCHD and Other Judas Catholic Groups!

I occasionally get asked what charities are safe to donate to. I have a few favorites of my own with Aid to the Church in Need, the Poor Clares, and the Little Sisters of the Poor among them. We also support a number of pro-life groups. Sad to say, many of the Catholic groups are among the most egregious when it comes to supporting intrinsic moral evils like abortion and contraception. The Lepanto Institute has a great webpage with reports on various charities both secular and religious. Their reporting on the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services exposes their deep connection to abortion, contraception, and sodomy. Catholic Judas groups often support organizations that help defeat pro-life politicians and elect radical leftists. And they use money from the people in the pews to do it who erroneously believe their hard-earned money is helping the poor and downtrodden.

The Lepanto Institute exposes the abject evil of of CCHD. They are a major contributor to Marxist community organizing. The goup was poison from the beginning, a plan hatched by Msgr. Jack Egan and Saul Alinsky to pick the pockets of American Catholics using the poor as window dressing.

In a 1974 Playboy interview Saul Alinsky said,
"If there is an afterlife, and I have anything to say
  about it, I will unreservedly choose to go to hell."

What can I say? The bloom is off the rose. I can still appreciate much of Fulton Sheen's work, but I can never read it again without a critical eye.  Learning about Sheen's Teilhard enthusiasm got me looking a little deeper into his social justice work. Stephanie Block, an expert on Alinsky community organizing, told me awhile back about Fulton Sheen's connections to Alinsky activities in Rochester. I didn't look into it at the time and forgot about it. It's disturbing to see that Sheen was an active enabler of Alinsky's radicalism. If he were alive today, I hope he would realize the error of some of his beliefs and actions and repudiate them. We'll never know. 

Would Sheen have supported a priest like Fr. Michael Pfleger in Chicago? I can't imagine it, but the priest he made his social justice guru, Fr. David Finks, sounds a lot like Pfleger who's even too much for liberal Cardinal Blase Cupich. Finks worked with the Alinsky organization FIGHT that targeted Kodak. During his tenure at the USCCB, he helped to create the notorious Catholic Campaign for Human Development which allowed Alinsky organizing groups (that support intrinsic evils condemned by the Church) to pick the pockets of the faithful. He later left the priesthood and married. And this was the man in whom Sheen put so much trust. It is disheartening to see how a man can be misled into undermining the good he does with their right hand, by the evil he supports with the left. But I don't intend to inter the good Sheen did with his bones. We have much to thank him for: his vigorous opposition to Communism, his constant urging for priests to make a daily holy hour, the excellence of so much of his writing, the conversions he fostered like Bella Dodd. The CCHD Collection Begins in Some Dioceses: Get Ready to SAY NO LOUD AND CLEAR!

In many dioceses the CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development) collection is taken near Thanksgiving, but in some it is earlier and the name has been changed in order to confuse the patsies in the pew. 

CCHD: It's all about funding Alinsky groups, not helping the poor!

This coming weekend Catholic churches all over the country will once again be taking up a collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, It is heavily advertised as helping the poor, but about 50% of the grants go to enrich and enable Alinskyite community organizing groups with agendas directly opposed to the Catholic faith and using means that are fundamentally immoral. That, in itself, is not surprising since, like Machiavelli, Alinsky believed accomplishing his ends justified any means.

Hold on to your wallet: The CCHD Collection is Coming Up!

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection is coming up and, as usual, Catholics will be hoodwinked into giving thinking their money will directly help the poor. It doesn't. A significant portion goes to community organizing groups directly involved in promoting moral evils and electing "progressive" politicians.

In most dioceses the collection is taken up the weekend before Thanksgiving. Some dioceses are calling the collection something else and holding it at different times as a disguise. For example, my friend Janet sent this email about the DC Archdiocese's collection:

The only changes I’ve seen have been on the part of the progressive cartel to obfuscate the nature of the collection. For instance, in the DC archdiocese, the collection is now held in August and is called the “Communication and Human Development” Collection. Cute, huh?

CCHD - The Scandal Goes On and On and On and.....

I sat in Mass yesterday (not at my home parish) and listened to the announcement for the second collection to benefit CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development). It was all the usual drivel about how the collection helps the poor, yadda...yadda...yadda. Not a word was said about the organizations receiving grants that promote abortion, contraception, homosexuality, etc. Of course, that would have a chilling effect on the purse and pocket pickers running the so-called "charity."

CCHD has a scandalous past and its present isn't too pretty either. As Michael Hichborn of the Lepanto Institute revealed today, things go on as they always have with Catholic money funneled to organizations undermining everything Catholicism stands for. Read their report about 2014-2015 grant recipient Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NBCCC). It promotes homosexual activism and communism! Yes communism!

Why?

Why do the Catholic bishops allow this to go on? Write to your diocesan bishop and ask why they continue to fund this national collection? Its continuation undermines the trust of the flock for their shepherds. What would you think of a shepherd who went out every night with a knife and bled his sheep? That's what CCHD does to the sheep in the pews, and it's way past time for it to stop!

Don't give to the CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development) collection this weekend and tell your friends to boycott! Unless, of course, you want your donation "for the poor" to go to abortion, contraception, promotion of same-sex "marriage," porn-pushing, prostitution enabling, salaries of community organizers and the election of political Marxists. Yes, Virginia, CCHD is funding all those things and the promotion of illegal immigration to boot! Tell the folks living on the border dealing with the drug lords, murders of ranchers, destruction of property, etc. what a great thing illegal immigration is. Last year, Gamaliel affilitates received almost $800,000 in grants. This "faith-based" community organizing group is notorious for promoting the liberal agenda. This collection is helping to push the U.S. over the cliff. And we're still waiting for an apology for all the Catholic money poured into ACORN. Cardinal Dolan? Anyone? Anyone?

In view of the information below about the U.S. bishops' domestic "charity," the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD),  I have a question:

Who is more zealous about winning souls?
The prince of this world or the U.S. bishops?

IT'S BAAACK...ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR CCHD -NOVEMBER 17-18

In about ten days, most dioceses in the United States will take up the annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. For years, researchers have demonstrated that a large portion of the collection goes to Alinskyite community organizing groups that advance abortion, contraception, same-sex activity, and cultural Marxism. In 2010 the controversy alarmed at least ten bishops enough to withdraw from the collection. But since then it appears to be back to business as usual. That is a particularly sobering thought in view of this week's election considering that it was a CCHD grant that gave the most pro-abortion politiician in history his start. (Thank you, bishops.)

Officials at CCHD continue to claim that changes have been made in the collection to correct all the abuses, (No problemo, amigos.), but, in a recent report, American Life League demonstrated that dozens of groups that support intrinsic evils and violate the bishops' own guidelines continue to receive millions in funding. In fact the 2011-2012 grantee period shows that grants to evil organizations more than doubled in amount from the previous year. So much for correcting abuses. Here's the summary from the report:

Summary
Review and Renewal Audit: ALL’s study of 2011–2012 CCHD grants found that 46 of the 195 Catholic dioceses in the United States had grantees in violation of the CCHD’s Review and Renewal guidelines:

• 27 of the 192 grantees currently funded by CCHD are directly involved in activities contrary to Church teaching. In addition, 45 are actively involved in coalitions promoting such activities.
• The total number of grantees in violation of CCHD grant guidelines is 72, or 37 percent.
• Two additional grantees are included in the report due to the actions of their leaders, bringing the total number of grantees profiled to 74.
• The total amount granted to offending groups is $2,889,500, which is an increase of $1,026,500 from the amount granted to offending groups in 2010–2011.
  • Thus, 38 percent of the $7,658,500 granted by CCHD in 2011–2012 went to grantees in violation of CCHD guidelines.

One more question:

Whose kingdom is the Bishops' Conference working to advance?

Michael Hichborn of American Life League has it exactly right in his comment preceding this article and his comment at the end. Are there no Catholic groups that help the homeless? Not only that, but how many organizations aren't quite as honest as Chelsea and wait to get caught with both hands in the cookie jar? Boycott the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).

I never thought I would catch myself saying this, but Kudos to the Chelsea Collaborative for having the honesty to return CCHD funding. But the big question is, why did CCHD go chasing after them like a forlorn lover, begging them not to go?

CCHD Continues Funding Liberalism

In fact, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development which promised to mend its ways is now worse than it was twenty years ago. Instead of only 30% funding of Alinskyite groups, it's now over half. My friend, Stephanie Block, who's been exposing CCHD corruption for decades. Stephanie explains how the bishops "charity" is drumming up support for the HHS mandate while the bishops pay lip service to opposition. Remember that old saying, "Put your money where your mouth is?" Well, you can tell what the bishops (or at least their bureaucrats) support by where the money goes and it sure isn't for the defense and expansion of the faith. When will it end? When CCHD is abolished and the bishops conference is completely defunded. Don't give a nickle to CCHD. It resembles the evil organization in C.S. Lewis' That Hideous Strength. 

OPEN LETTER TO PRIESTS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Dear Father,


You are no doubt well aware of the on-going controversy surrounding the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). The recently released American Life League report evaluating CCHD grants found that the situation in 2010 was worse than the previous year. Sadly, the same scenario has repeated, like an endless loop, since CCHD’s establishment in 1969. Concerned Catholics expose grantees who directly or indirectly promote abortion, contraception, liberation theology, the gay agenda, etc. CCHD engages in “reform,” but the objectionable grants continue. In this latest go-around, CCHD has attacked ALL and others accusing them of an “agenda” and claiming their critique is rehashed information. But within weeks of ALL’s exposé, CCHD defunded a group in the report.

Recently Real Catholic TV entered the fray with a CIA (Catholic Investigative Agency) review on CCHD which is devastating. Twenty-four percent of the collection last year went to groups that either directly or indirectly support abortion, contraception, the homosexual agenda including same-sex marriage, and cultural Marxism. Real Catholic TV exposed several additional groups besides the ALL list. The fact is, millions of dollars collected through CCHD from unsuspecting Catholics went to these evil organizations.

Serious questions must be addressed with regard to the annual CCHD collection:

American Life League was Right After ALL

As soon as American Life League (ALL) and Reform CCHD NOW released their latest report on the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) showing how it has increased its funding of objectionable groups, CCHD went into overdrive to discredit them. All their info was rehashed, we were told, exaggerated and innacurate. CCHD had investigated. ALL has an agenda. Yada-yada-yada. Well, it appears that ALL was right after all -- at least in one recent case raised by ALL which leads astute readers to ask, "How many others." See here.

Turns out that that the NYC AIDS Housing Network lied about not violating Church teachings and that, in fact, they distribute condoms, an act that not only violates Catholic teaching, but is counterproductive in controlling AIDS as the experience in Africa shows. (The only program showing significant reduction of AIDS is the one promoted in Uganda, premarital abstinence and marital fidelity. That's the real solution to the AIDS crisis. See here. African countries with the highest rate of condom distribution also have the highest rate of AIDS.)

But I digress. The fact is that CCHD, with all their "vetting" and all their paid bureaucrats working in chanceries around the country and at the national office in D.C., can't find the material that a few activist researchers, mostly volunteers, turn up easily.

May one be forgiven for thinking that CCHD is the one with an agenda that includes funding liberal organizations and electing liberals to state and national government? How many other grantees have CCHD bureaucrats "vetted" who are actively engaged in undermining Catholic teaching and promoting liberalism? As I've written before in, "Who to believe?", CCHD is far from trustworthy.

For my part I'll stick with ALL, Reform CCHD Now, Stephanie Block, the Catholic Media Coaltion, The Wanderer, and the all the other trumpet blowers who believe CCHD is all about funneling money into Alinsky groups and electing liberals who will work to empower, not the poor, but the community organizers. It's been going on for decades. Why should we believe things have changed? I agree completely with Janet Baker of Reform D.C. Catholicism, a member of the Catholic Media Coalition who outlined the horrible treatment of Rey Flores in Chicago who tried to reform the local organization and direct money to truly worthy organizations. Rey was fired for doing what every CCHD officer should be doing! Here's what Janet wrote after noting the injustice to Flores from this "social justice" organization:

It is my serious contention that the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is beyond reform. It is a blight upon Catholicism that should be abolished as soon as possible. At the very least, it should be stripped of the name "Catholic" (which it did not have originally) and expunged from the Church. Let's boycott any and all future collections and starve this nefarious beast. (See article.)

In 2009, I made the video below to alert folks to CCHD's corrupt agenda. Nothing really has changed despite all the huffing and puffing at the bishops' conference. Who do you trust to spend your charity dollars wisely? CCHD or yourself? When the CCHD collection comes to your parish in a few weeks, drop  an acorn in the basket. It isn't just nuts who are running things at the CCHD; the organization is an enemy of the Church.

ALL and CCHD: Who to Believe?

The American Life League (ALL) recently released a report of the on-going problems with the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), the bishops annual anti-poverty collection. The report indicates that problems with CCHD have increased in the past year and that the bishops' charity is actually funding more bad organizations than it did last year despite its well publicized review of the process. The response from CCHD to the ALL report was a brief news release accusing ALL of releasing rehashed and innacurate data that is without substance. Hmm...who to believe?

This debate isn't new; it's raged now for several decades. CCHD claims to be helping relieve poverty, while critics point out that many of the recipients of Catholic money diametrically oppose Church teaching and work to organize for abortion and homosexual rights. So what about the latest round in the debate? Who's right? On which side does the balance of truth fall?

ALL released a 200 page report outlining the offending organizations with specifics about those involved in, for example, condom distribution, promotion of homosexuality, etc. The brief response from CCHD and the two page press release from bishops involved with the program at the national level claim the allegations are rehashed and recycled information that are without substance and that the organizations have been reviewed. They also accuse ALL of pushing an agenda without addressing any of the specifics in the ALL report. In essence, their response was, "We've vetted the organizations and they're fine. Trust us."

Stephanie Block addressed the CCHD response in a cogent piece at SperoForum: Without Substance: The debate over the Catholic Campaign for Human Development goes on and on... Block is an expert on Alinsky organizing and has researched the bishops charity for over twenty years including its direct ties to Alinsky community organizing groups.

After years of disinformation from the CCHD and a history of funding liberal causes, it's hard to take their two page denial and attack of ALL seriously. As Block points out, with specific examples from CCHD's most recent grant report, the organization continues to funnel Catholic dollars into objectionable organizations that are less interested in alleviating poverty than in promoting political causes that often violate Catholic teaching. As Block says, the debate goes on and on and unfortunately so does the reality that CCHD simply can't be trusted.

Should a Catholic Support the CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development)?

The CCHD's annual collection is billed as an anti-poverty measure. Who can possibly argue with helping the poor, eh? But since the inception of the collection, a strategy that included collaberation between Msgr. Jack Egan of Chicago and community organizing guru Saul Alinsky, faithful Catholics have complained that much of the money goes into organizing for liberal causes. Many groups supported in the past have direct ties to abortion, contraception, and liberal politics. Opposition to the collection has grown to the degree that CCHD has apparently mounted, not so much a cleanup of the organization, but a new strategy to make opposition difficult.

Let me explain. Traditionally, the collection for CCHD is the weekend before Thanksgiving. But in the past year or so, diocese have taken a new approach to the special collection by taking it up at odd times. As we were passing through South Dakota, the bulletin for the church in Spearfish was advertising it for September. In some places, even the name has changed. The collection in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. labeled it Communication +. Now isn't that interesting? It comes across to me as a measure to eliminate the effectiveness of the opposition and fool as many people in the pews as possible. What does that say about the bishops' bureaucracy?

Catholics need to be careful about where they put their money. Sadly, in many dioceses, the people in the pew cannot trust that their bishop is protecting the interests of the most vulnerable. When Catholic money goes to organizations that enable the culture of death, it's time to rise in righteous anger and fight. One way is to stop giving to special collections altogether.
