A Modest Proposal for the March for Life: Move it to the Right Anniversary!

As tens of thousands prepare to participate in the annual March for Life with a record-breaking snowstorm predicted for the area, I can't help thinking we keep shooting at the wrong target. Yes, Roe v. Wade was an atrocity, but it was only the bitter fruit of an ugly seed -- Griswold v. Connecticut.

An astute friend of mine said years ago that we were never meant to march in the dead of winter on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, January 22nd; that, instead, we should be marching on the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut, June 7th (1965). Why that decision? Because Griswold enshrined the "right to privacy," removed restrictions on the sale of birth control to married couples, and set in motion acceptance of abortion on demand as a personal right, as well as sowing the seeds for death on demand by euthanasia.

It's Contraception, Stupid! It's Fatal to the Faith!

Yup, a root cause of our crumbling society is contraception. Mike Voris pegs it. All the sexual deviancies have their foundation in the rejection of the truth that sexual union and procreation are inextricably connected and cannot be separated without creating a spiritual explosion equivalent to splitting the atom.

Are you unsure about contraception? Read both Humanae Vitae and Fr.John Hardon's article Contraception: Fatal to the Faith. If you are practicing contraception you are in danger of hell. If you are promoting contraception to others, you are in danger of hell. Medical professionals who prescribe and dispense contraceptives are in danger of hell. That is the hard truth. We will be marching on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, but Roe was an aftershock of the real earthquake, Griswold v. Connecticut. I remember a statement from one of my Natural Family Planning (NFP) students. "I was on the way to hell, and NFP saved my life." God made us in a way that allows the spacing of children. The Church teaches that couples may use NFP for serious reasons. When I had cancer and was on chemotherapy at age 39, NFP allowed my husband and me to comfort each other in sexual intimacy without fearing we would endanger a child's life. NFP and the Church's teaching on marriage and sexuality are not punishments; they are part of the good news. Embrace Church teaching on this issue that is so central to who we are as body/spirit persons. Like my young friend realized, the freedom you experience is life and soul-saving!

The Third Rail: Contraception

Years ago a friend of mine said the Lord never meant us to march for life during the cold winter, that we should be marching on the anniversary of Griswold v. Connecticut in June (June 7, 1965). Why? Because Griswold is the Supreme Court ruling that overthrew all the laws against selling contraceptives (the Comstock Laws) and established the "penumbra" right to privacy which is nowhere enumerated in the Constitution. Griswold was the Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood League of Connecticut. Like Roe, Griswold was a 7-2 decision that forbade all states in the U.S. from banning the sale of contraceptives. It's another example of the court legislating. It became the "privacy" decision used to overthrow all laws against abortion, which was always Planned Parenthood's not-so-hidden agenda.

Contraception is abortion's root. Anyone who claims to oppose abortion but supports contraception is foolish or a liar. Wherever contraception is promoted, abortions increase. More on that later. Michael Voris is absolutely right and it's high time we heard more preaching against contraception!
