The Rome of Cognitive Dissonance and Doublethink

There's a psychological term that applies in spades to our age of confusion and chaos. It's called "cognitive dissonance" in the language of mental health and "doublethink" in the language of dystopian literature. Both terms mean the same thing: the act of trying to believe two contradictory things at the same time. 

Sadly, modernist Rome has become the icon of cognitive dissonance and doublethink. The Vatican pays lip service to the unchanging Catholic faith taught for two millennia, while, at the same time, undermining it with modernist claptrap. One bishop says contraception and abortion are wrong. Another says there are circumstances when they're not. Moral relativism takes center stage in the synodal church where sexual deviance is love.

Remember back in 1968 when the encyclical on marriage, Humanae Vitae, was released affirming the sanctity of marriage and the marital embrace?

Remember the lavish full color booklets dioceses developed to spread the message to the Catholic faithful to help them understand the teaching of the Church and why contraception violated God's plan of love for the family? Remember all those beautiful sermons and conferences with priests and married couples eloquently expressing their appreciation for the document?

You don't remember that?

Not at all?

Right! I don't either. All we heard was the sound of silence.

Those who Uphold the Doctrine of the Church are now the Dissenters?

I never expected to live to see those who uphold the two-millennial unchanging doctrine of the Church labeled as dissenters. But is it really surprising? The modus operandi of liberals is name-calling. If you can't answer an argument, attack its source. And then tell them how worried you are about the state of their souls for being rigid and unmerciful and how they must have psychological problems if they love the Latin Mass (and the truth)!

 But what I find disconcerting and distressing is that people I thought were faithful Catholics are so starry-eyed over this pope (I think popolatry is a an accurate term) and so enamored of his faux compassion and faux mercy that they are willing to attack anyone who even asks a question -- like the four cardinals who requested clarification of Amoris Laetitia. Asking questions is now dissent?

I wrote a letter awhile back to a so-called Catholic parish in Louisville that is so far out in la-la land it would be hard to find it on a lunacy map. When I say I wrote the letter "awhile back" I admit it's so far back, I can't remember, and unfortunately I forgot to date it. But I got a copy of it in the mail yesterday with an anonymous note on the back that made me laugh. Since the letter is online I can't be sure it came from someone at the parish, but it was, in fact, postmarked from Louisville so it's likely. Nice to know somebody was paying attention.

I'm inclined to agree. Cardinal Bernardin used to do the same thing. He'd articulate a teaching of the Church and then make a statement about conscience or some other point to undermine the doctrine and imply that ignoring the doctrine was fine. Bernardin-watchers got used to the tactic.

Bishop Thomas Gumbleton: Scandalizing in Retirement

Some bishops are so predictable. They spent their active ministry committing scandals without end. Why stop after retirement?

Case in point: Bishop Thomas Gumbleton who spent his entire "career" (I use the term deliberately) pushing the gay agenda and filling the diocese of Detroit, where he was an auxiliary bishop, with dissent.

Gumbleton was notorious for publicly disputing Church teaching on women's ordination, contraception, and the gay lifestyle. And it continues. On Sunday he celebrated an anniversary liturgy for Dignity, the homosexual activist group for Catholics. Support for Dignity was one of the in-your-face dissent activities that caused Rome to force Gumbleton's retirement in 2006 after he refused to resign upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.

But retirement hasn't shut up this loudmouthed dissenter. He continues to scandalize while he publicly disagrees with the solid doctrinal teaching of the current Archbishop of Detroit, Allen Vigneron. And, of course he's the media darling for his attack on Church authority.

Walter Sullivan: "The Good Bishop" - Hahahahahahahaha

I can't stop laughing after reading a description of a new biography of Bishop Walter Sullivan who spent 29 years decimating the Diocese of Richmond which still hasn't recovered. The last time we went to Virginia Beach we visited two churches on Saturday morning and neither one had morning Mass. The parish we went to in Hampton for Sunday Mass was so filled with liturgical abuses we decided not to receive Communion. (The bread used for consecration looked like gingerbread and the fraction was performed by ladies helping out at the altar.) You can read about that particular abomination here.

Walter Sullivan persecuted orthodox priests, allowed rampant dissent to rule in Richmond, and helped advance the homosexual agenda. He allowed a parish in the Norfolk area to hold an ecumenical liturgy where the Protestants and Catholics shared the Liturgy of the Word then went to opposite ends of the hall for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. When I wrote to object I got a letter signed by the bishop saying he was well aware of it and claiming it was legit. Disobeying Holy Mother Church was not a problem for him.

What exactly are the reforms these priests want? And how can they declare themselves "independent?"

Time gives some details:

These [reforms] include letting nonordained people lead religious services and deliver sermons; making communion available to divorced people who have remarried; allowing women to become priests and to take on important positions in the hierarchy; and letting priests carry out pastoral functions even if, in defiance of church rules, they have a wife and family.

Vatican Reins in Renegade Nuns

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) is calling for reform of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the association of radical nuns who promote dissent in the Church. In a "doctrinal assessment" released today. LCWR is critiqued and found wanting in three areas: addresses at the LCWR Assemblies, their policy of "corporate dissent," and their "radical feminism." Among other things, the assessment found LCWR promoting "positive error" in talks given at their conferences, exacerbated by "silence and inaction of the LCWR in the face of such error."

The two-page mandate for implementing the doctrinal assessment includes the following:

1) "To revise LCWR Statutes to ensure greater clarity about the scope of the mission and responsibilities of this conference of major superiors" subject to approval by the Holy See.
2) "To review LCWR plans and programs, including General Assemblies and publications, to ensure... [they] accord with Church teachings and discipline." Speakers at major programs are henceforth "subject to approval" and certain materials must be revised and reformed.
3) "To create new LCWR programs for member Congregations...that provides (sic) a deepened understanding of the Church's doctrine of the faith."
4) "To review and offer guidance in the application of liturgical norms and texts." For example giving a "place of priority in LCWR events to the Holy Eucharist and Liturgy of the Hours.
5) "To review LCWR links with affiliated organizations, e.g., Network and Resource Center for Religious Life." 

The mandate is for a period of up to five years "as deemed necessary."

All I can say is, "IT'S ABOUT TIME!" Donna Steichen summarized all the abuses of the LCWR mentioned in the doctrinal assessment in her book Ungodly Rage published in 1992. It's only taken twenty years for the men in the Church to come to the same conclusions as this godly prophet. In the meantime, think of all the damage done to the people under the influence of these dissenters.

On the other hand, better late than never. So read the full report and rejoice. The coven of witches running the LCWR is being called out. Do you think they'll obey or rally their followers to withdraw to a moonlit grove in the woods to commune with Sophia? After all, many of these women claim that the priesthood is outdated and unnecessary, their function replaced by the community. Of course, that's not what Jesus taught, but what radical feminist nun ever let a little problem like what Jesus taght get in her way? Pray that the nuns change their tune and sing a song of humility and obedience to Peter's successor. If not, sayonara, old babes, we'll pray for your salvation.

Alleluia! Norma Jean Coon Recants Ordination to the Diaconate

Pray for Norma Jean who has publicly recanted her ordination, expressed her submission to Rome, and accepted Church teaching on the all male priesthood. Read her story here.

This is not a small thing. Her humility in publicly repenting will touch the hearts of others opposing the Church and give hope to the faithful that their prayers for those committing heretical acts are not without effect.

May God bless Norma Jean and use her powerfully in the days ahead.  "O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine."

Happy Monday, Liberal Catholics are in an Uproar over "Taliban Catholicism"

I got my laugh for the day (maybe the week) when I opened up my email this morning and found a link to an Associated Press article titled Catholic bloggers aim to purge dissenters. The author, Rachel Zoll, describes orthodox Catholic bloggers saying, "Enraged by dissent that they believe has gone unchecked for decades, and unafraid to say so in the starkest language, these activists are naming names and unsettling the church."

That is good news, indeed! The liberal bishops in the United States who cozy up to pro-abortion politicians, finance groups that support abortion and contraception, let homosexual activists hold pride events in their parishes, and on and on -- I'd say they need a little "unsettling."

Zoll quotes two sides of the spectrum. Michael Voris, commentator of The Vortex on Real Catholic TV and head of St. Michael's Media, a bastion of orthodoxy, says, "We're no more engaged in a witch hunt than a doctor excising a cancer is engaged in a witch hunt. We're just shining a spotlight on people who are Catholics who do not live the faith." And he does it with panache and power!

Then there's John Allen, Rome correspondent for the dissent rag, the National Catholic Reporter. He's the one coining the term "taliban Catholicism," although he says it can also refer to liberals who are enraged by any exercise of Church authority. But on the Internet, Zoll says, "conservatives are having the bigger impact."

When liberals whine about the orthodox, you know you're having an impact. They label every disagreement "vitriol" or "violence" or both. I know; I've been accused of it often enough for disagreeing with a liberal's position. I hope I can consider myself among the Catholic bloggers criticized in this article who are reviled for speaking the truth:

"Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me. Be glad and rejoice, for tyour reward is great in heaven; they persecuted the prophets before you in the very same way."

 Certainly, what we do must be done in charity, but tough love means calling a spade a spade and a heretic a heretic. (By the way, the definition of heresy is the denial of a doctrine that must be believed. Those pro-abortion Catholic politicians who say they can "personally oppose" abortion while publicly supporting it are heretics!)

Trinity: the Catholic School Pat McGuire Killed

In February, the Washington Post Magazine (WPM) carried a puff piece on Trinity University in Washington, D.C. praising its president, Patricia McGuire, as “The Devoted” with a subheading describing her thus: “She spent her life transforming Trinity. So where does Pat McGuire – and the university she rebuilt – go from here?”1 In general the article described McGuire’s commitment to Trinity and her role in empowering women (pro-abortion feminist women like Trinity graduates Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Kathleen Sebelius, former governor of Kansas and currently the Secretary of Health and Human Services; and Maggie Williams, former chief of staff for first lady Hillary Clinton. Trinity has lionized these women as they advanced liberalism and the democrat party.) The author called McGuire “the soul” of Trinity, and he apparently meant it as high praise. But, in fact, McGuire has presided over the demise of a once great Catholic institution that has lost her soul. Trinity once inspired women to be defenders and champions of the Catholic faith. No more.

I know. My mother graduated from Trinity in 1939 with a warrior’s heart. She raised ten children, six of them girls, passing on a strong sense of personal responsibility for practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. And her education at Trinity, along with her upbringing, played an important part in developing her moral conscience. She loved the doctrines of the Church that valued life from its first beginnings. She embraced the Church’s exhortation to a life of virtue and resistance to the seven deadly sins that lead one on the path to hell. She had a strong social conscience rooted in Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical, Rerum Novarum. Sadly, the Trinity that fostered that holy devotion to the truth in my mom is long gone and McGuire helped destroy her.
