| Judge Joseph Laplante |
The decision by the Supreme Court is somewhat ambiguous and the issue over birthright citizenship is still an open question. Nevertheless, Laplante's action was arrogant.
The article below is fascinating because, in addition to some brief comments by Fr. MacRae, the "author" was an AI generated response to a question:
QUERY
Recently the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that U.S. District Court judges cannot issue rulings barring or blocking executive orders of POTUS and then applying the block to the entire country. Shortly after that, U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante blocked President Trump’s Executive Order on birthright citizenship. This brought a lot of attention to Judge Laplante. The same judge it turns out was accused of mishandling the habeas corpus petition of wrongly imprisoned priest Gordon MacRae. I understand that you have also weighed in on that case. Here is a link to a critical article: “A Grievous Error in Judge Joseph Laplante’s Court”
It's a new world out there with AI more and more involved in our lives. How soon will AI take over as Newspaper editors, reporters, etc. Already driverless taxis are being introduced in our cities. But the role of AI is a separate issue. For now, take a look at the AI article on Beyond These Stone Walls. And please pray for justice for Fr. Gordon MacRae.
Judge Joseph Laplante, President Trump, and the Case of Father MacRae
Apparently, Supreme Court excepted class action suits which could receive a national ban; also LaPlante allowed gov't 7 days for an emergency appeal (which gov't has yet to file): "Laplante’s decision will stop the executive order from taking effect July 27 in New Hampshire and other states that don’t currently have injunctions, but the decision has been stayed until July 17 to allow the government to appeal, he announced in court Thursday...Laplante’s decision to issue a national injunction Thursday stands in contrast to his decision in the February case to narrow his ruling. At that time, he had called it inappropriate for a district court judge to issue a national injunction. On Thursday, he clarified that position. “It’s a better process to narrow these types of decisions and not have judges create national policy,” Laplante said at one point during oral arguments. But at a different point, he added: “I wasn’t a judge that was comfortable with a national injunction. But class action is different.”

People rooting for this ban, don't know the hassle it will put Americans into having to prove both parents were citizens before they can get a SSN/passport (i.e. a birth certificate will no longer prove ANYONE is a citizen of the U.S.). "“With respect to citizenship, an SSN applicant may currently demonstrate U.S. citizenship by providing a birth certificate showing a U.S. place of birth,” the document says. “Once the EO takes effect, a birth certificate showing a U.S. place of birth will not be sufficient documentary evidence of U.S. citizenship for persons born after the EO takes effect.”
