Editor's note: I received this email today from my friend Bob Marshall, former Virginia state delegate and often called the "conscience" of the Virginia legislature. Sad to say he was replaced by a transgender "woman" whose campaign ads included how he put on his makeup which always brings to my mind the expressions about putting lipstick on a pig or not being able to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse. Sorry, Dan, you're still a man! After you pray the healing prayer, please say a prayer for poor deluded Dan (Danica) Roem whom Manassas voters continue to support and is now running for state senate. MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (August 5, 2019 – Feast of Our Lady of the Snows) On August 1, 2019, at the 38th Annual Chesterton Conference, held this year in Kansas City, I read to the 500 attendees the following letter from Bishop Peter Doyle of Northampton, England, a man who has always shown me the greatest kindness and respect:

I love G.K. Chesterton! And how I long to see his cause for canonization advanced.

He is a real-life Santa Claus, not only in his girth, but in his magnanimous spirit. I use that word deliberately, a word that comes from the Latin: "magna" for great, and "animus" for soul. He was, indeed, a "great soul" who loved his fellow man and never preened his brilliance to impress an audience. When asked, "What's wrong with the world?" he responded humbly without a pause, "I am."

Thinking about Chesterton recently, I embraced the acronym WOW! to describe him. Three of his greatest characteristics were his sense of WONDER, his OPTIMISM, and his WIT. He exuded joy and cheerfulness, a man who, like comedian and social commentator Will Rogers, "never met a man [he] didn't like." He could debate and criticize an atheist contemporary without the conversation degenerating to the level of animosity. Don't we desperately need that kind of respectful exchange today? In fact, the writer H.G. Wells, with whom he vigorously disagreed, once said:

I love Gilbert Magazine. Today I was reading as I ate my stew and was thrilled to see that Chesterton's cause for canonization is being investigated by Bishop Peter Doyle of Northampton, England. Well, what a gift that would be the Church: the "apostle of common sense" raised to the honors of the altar! Certainly our age needs common sense more than almost anything else.
