Was the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima a Warning for the End Times?

On October 13, 1917, Our Lady made her final visit to the Cova de Iria in Fatima, Portugal. She produced the promised miracle. Not only did the sun dance, but it appeared to plunge toward the earth. Many of the terrified witnesses dropped to their knees and began to confess their sins and make a fervent act of contrition. The sun did not hit the earth that day, it returned to its place in the sky. But was that solar event a warning that a future chastisement would come through the activity of the sun?

Fr. Tom Collins recently began sending me information about the unusual activity of the sun and CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections). Here's his latest email:
A few hours ago, a Youtube video on unusual recent solar activity was released. Astronomers are baffled by what is happening and concerned about how this anomaly could trigger major natural disasters on earth.

In view of the 1917 Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, indicating that the chastisement for unrepented sins would be triggered by the sun, it should be noted that the earth has experienced several direct hits by CEM's ( the odds of a direct hit is about 1/1,000,000,000,000). These direct hits, not human carbon emissions, are the main cause of global disasters and climate changes. And recent CEM's and magnetic holes in the sun indicate that a complete reversal in the sun's magnetic field may soon occur.
Also check out the Dzhanibekov effect, which indicates the real possibility that the earth could unexpectedly go through a sudden 180 degree shift in its axis.
Sadly, after more than a century, the message of Fatima and its call to authentic repentance are still largely ignored even by many Catholics.
God have mercy on us!
Fr. Tom

At the same time I receive this message from Fr. Tom, I was watching Fr. David Nix's talk at the recent Roman Forum sponsored by LifeSiteNews. Fr. Nix spoke about Fatima and the meaning of Mary's words, "In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. He posited two theories of what Mary meant by "in the end" with regard to the end of the world.

In option A, Fr. Nix looked at the seven ages of the Church as described byVenerable Bartholomew Holzhauser, a holy priest of the 17th century who founded the Bartholomites as a secular order of priests to renew Catholic lay life and promote seminary education. The order died out in the 18th century. You can read about his theory of the seven ages of the Church here, but Fr. Nix gave a brief explanation:

First Age: Apostolic time up to the persecution of Nero

Second Age: The persecution of Nero to Constantine.

Third Age: Constantine to Charlemagne

Fourth Age: Middle Ages time of peace up to the Protestant Revolution

Fifth Age: Protestant Revolution  to modern times (17th c. to 20th c.), overturning the sacraments [Most of the stages lasted several hundred years.] We are at the end of the fifth age, a time "when everything seems lost and paralyzed."

Sixth Age:  Will be a time of great restoration. Those destined to aid in the restoration of the Church will, according to the apparitions of Our Lady of Good Success in Quito, will show "great strength of will, constancy, valor, and trust in God."

Seventh Age: Rise of the Antichrist who will reign for three and a half years.

Most Catholics who discuss this believe option A that the end times are not imminent. Those, a minority who believe option B is accurate, interpret the seven ages to say the end of the world is near. Fr. Nix stresses the point that no one needs to believe in or accept private revelations for salvation. And his conference was certainly not gloom and doom. It was a call to be ready every minute. Whether the end of the world is imminent or not, the end for many of us is. Will I see the restoration of the Church? It's possible. Father told a story about Padre Pio being asked by a family if they would see the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He told the parents, no they would not see it, but their children (born in the early 1950s) would.

One of the most interesting quotes was one from the apparitions of La Sallette, that the Church would see "two worm-ridden popes."

"You live in the most thrilling times of all Church history," Fr. Nix said. I was born in 1947 so if any of this is true, I may live to see it. I'm not sure whether to be "thrilled" since Our Lady at Fatima and Akita seemed to predict that the epoch between the fifth and sixth age will involve nuclear war. Although Padre Pio predicted a different disaster, a meteorite striking the earth.

The last coincidence of this post is that Fr. Nix mentioned Cardinal Manning. I recently did a series on his statements about the end times. You can read them here

Now let me say that none of us should be terrified and if that's what talking about the end times does, it would be better not to think about it. Just love God and "do what you please" as St. Alphonsus says. If we trust in God and His Providence, there is no need to fear. "Stay in grace and pray your rosary," Fr. Nix advises. Amen to that. If you aren't praying the daily rosary, make that your new year's resolution!

Will the chastisement come from war? Will it come from the heavens? We have ignored and blasphemed against the Son, the Light of the Word. Would not punishment from a solar event, from our world's light, be appropriate? Only God knows, but we can reduce the punishment by responding to Our Lady's messages. She is the Queen of Peace. God does not want us to suffer. He sends His Mother to warn us and draw us out of rebellion and back to fidelity. will we listen?

Finally, I recommend Fr. David Nix. This short talk is well worth your time. And I would also recommend subscribing to his website

  1. The main message of Our Lady of Fatima, delivered in 1917 to three shepherd children in Portugal, is a call to conversion, prayer, and reparation to bring peace to the world and save souls.
The message is often summarized by these core pillars:
    1. Daily Prayer of the Rosary
The most frequent request made by Mary during all six apparitions was to "pray the Rosary every day." She stated that this was the key to obtaining peace for the world and an end to the war (World War I).
    2. Repentance and Penance
A central theme was the need for humanity to stop offending God. The message urges individuals to:
Amend their lives and ask for forgiveness for their sins.
Make sacrifices for the conversion of sinners.
Offer up daily trials and sufferings as an act of reparation.
    3. Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Mary revealed that "God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart." This involves:
The Five First Saturdays: A specific devotion involving Confession, Holy Communion, the Rosary, and meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary for five consecutive months.
Consecration: Entrusting oneself and the world (specifically Russia, in the context of the 1917 message) to her heart to prevent future wars and the spread of "errors."
    4. A Warning and a Hope
The message included a "Secret" in three parts, which featured a vision of hell and a warning that if people did not change, a greater war (World War II) and the persecution of the Church would follow. However, the message concludes with a promise of hope:
"In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph."

  2. The Miracle of the Sun (October 13, 1917) served two main purposes: it was a "seal" of authenticity to prove the children were telling the truth, and a "sign" to emphasize the urgency of the message they were delivering.
Here is a breakdown of why the miracle happened:
    1. To Provide "Proof" for All to Believe
The three children (Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta) had been widely mocked, interrogated, and even jailed by local authorities who believed they were lying. In response to their request for a sign, the Virgin Mary promised months in advance:
"In October, I will perform a miracle so that all may believe."
By announcing the exact date, time, and location, the miracle was designed to be a public, objective event that could not be dismissed as a private hallucination. It was witnessed by an estimated 70,000 people, including skeptics, scientists, and secular journalists.
    2. To Authenticate the Message
The miracle acted as a "divine signature" on the messages given during the previous five months. It signaled that the calls for daily prayer, the Rosary, and repentance were not just the ideas of children, but an urgent mandate from Heaven.
    3. A Symbolic Warning
The miracle itself—where the sun appeared to "dance," change colors, and then plunge toward the earth—terrified the crowd. Many believed the world was ending and fell to their knees in confession.
A Call to Awe: It reminded a world becoming increasingly secular and "godless" (at the height of WWI and the rise of atheistic ideologies) that God is the Creator and holds power over the universe.
A Conditional Warning: Many theologians view the sun's "fall" as a symbolic warning of what could happen (war and destruction) if humanity did not turn away from sin.
    4. A Physical Sign of Grace
A lesser-known but remarkable detail is that it had been raining torrentially all day; the crowd was soaked and the ground was thick with mud. After the "sun" returned to its place, the witnesses discovered that their clothes and the ground were completely dry, which served as a tangible, physical proof of the event's reality.
Interesting Fact: Even the anti-religious, pro-government newspapers of the time (like O Século) reported the event on their front pages, with journalists describing the sun "trembling" and "making sudden incredible movements."
Would you like to know more about what the children saw specifically during the miracle while the crowd was watching the sun?

  3. While the crowd of 70,000 was watching the sun "dance" and plunge toward the earth, the three shepherd children (Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta) saw a completely different set of visions in the sky.
As the Lady had promised, they were shown three distinct scenes representing the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries of the Rosary. Here is what they saw:
    1. The Vision of the Holy Family (The Joyful)
Initially, the children saw Saint Joseph standing next to the Virgin Mary (dressed in white with a blue mantle). St. Joseph was holding the Child Jesus.
The Action: Both St. Joseph and the Child Jesus appeared to be blessing the world, as they each made the sign of the cross with their hands.
The Meaning: This symbolized the importance of the family unit and the domestic church.
    2. The Vision of Our Lady of Sorrows (The Sorrowful)
Next, Lucia (the only one who saw all three visions) saw Jesus standing in grief and Our Lady of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa) without the traditional sword in her heart.
The Action: Jesus appeared to bless the people.
The Meaning: This reflected the suffering of Christ and the call to make reparation for sins.
    3. The Vision of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (The Glorious)
Finally, the vision changed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, crowned as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
The Action: She was holding the Brown Scapular in her hand.
The Meaning: This represented the triumph of Mary and the protection she offers to those who remain devoted to her.
Key Differences Between the Crowd and the Children
It is a fascinating detail of the Fatima event that the "Miracle" was tailored differently for the two groups:

  4. I received an email from a reader in the U.K. who doesn't use Google, so I'm posting for her. Please pray for Catherine who has many physical challenges requiring 24 hour care. She is truly a victim soul:

    Dear Mary Ann,

I have just read your fascinating article on Fatima. Fatima is my favourite apparition. Many articles on Fatima ignore two things that I think very, very important.

The first is that when the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is done PROPERLY, there will be a period of peace. The consecrations have not been done properly to date and have not produced any peace [I have read that the peace would be about 25 years of peace, good harvests, etc] as a result.

The second concern is that Our Lady said she would come 7 times [if I'm correct]. The appearances at Fatima ran from May to October [ie 6 times]. The last appearance has not happened.

A third comment: it’s rather obvious, but Heaven does not tell lies. The BVM does not visit earth to tell us a ‘load of rubbish’ [as the lady who brought me up would say]. She WILL fulfil her promise.

I think it’s very likely that we live in the pre-last times. But with these two things make me hesitate.

I wish you and your family a Happy, Peaceful and Grace-filled New Year.

    Best wishes,
    Catherine
