Is it just me? Or does the destroyer of the Jesuit order, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, remind you of the villain in the Poltergeist series, Reverend Henry Kane? Arrupe is renowned for relaxing the "rigidity" of the order. And now there's talk of canonizing the man. God help us when single-handed faith-wrecking machines are considered fit models for the faithful!

Rev. Henry Kane, the devil's right-hand man |
It isn't just you.
ReplyDeleteI think there are some recent beatifications and canonizations that are done quickly and without the need for miracles, etc. That Arrupe was a headache to JPII who came so very close to suppressing the 'jesuit church' but Arrupe was able to forestall him, sadly.
ReplyDeleteArrupe destroyed the Jesuits just as Jorge is destroying the Church so of course Arrupe has to be declared a saint. He's already classified as a Servant of God. We must have leftist Communist saints to admire.
ReplyDeleteThe story of my spiritual director is indicative of the destruction Arrupe wrought on the Jesuits. He had joined the Jesuit Order in 1947. The Jesuits have (had?) a very lengthy formation, and he was finally ordained in 1960. As the Vietnam War was heating up he requested, and received, permission from his Superiors to enlist as a chaplain in the US Military. When his enlistment was up, he returned to the States to discover that the Jesuits had become quite a different Order.
ReplyDeleteThe Council had happened whilst he was in the military, with all the intendant 'reform' of Orders and Institutes. He took a look at what the Jesuits had become, said, 'This is not the Order I joined', and walked away! No laicisation or anything.
He 'married', invalidly, of course, since Canon Law absolutely forbids an ordained Priest from attempting marriage.
He had children and a successful business career. When his children were grown, his 'wife' died, leaving him a widower. At some point after that, our Archbishop, whose Cathedral was across the street from my house, called him. As Father told the story, His Excellency said, 'Matt, don't you think it's about time to come home?'
A few months later, he was the Pastor of a Church in the town I lived in where I met him. Father has passed way, and of your charity, I ask for your prayers for the repose of his soul.
I am folically challenged and I think all you guys are just prejudiced against us old bald guys! Just kidding......................definitely his doppelganger
