Is Just War Theory Dead? Are Babies Just Collateral Damage?

Bombing of Yassin Mosque in Gaza City --
Are Churches, synagogues, and mosques appropriate targets during wars?

Regular blog visitors know that I'm a big fan of Chronicles Magazine. The January issue ran a sobering article titled Sowing the Seeds of Future Terror by Mark G. Brennan. I recommend it for anyone who is an unbridled cheerleader for Israel's response to the horrible terrorist attack of October 7th. Yes, Hamas deserves our condemnation and Israel has a right to defend herself, but do the peaceful civilians in Gaza, the babes in arms and innocent children, deserve annihilation for the sins of Hamas?
In response to the attack, Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, made this shocking vow:
Gaza won't return to what it was before...We will eliminate everything.
During a press conference in mid October, Gallant re-emphasized that promise:
We will wipe out this thing called Hamas...— the Islamic State of Gaza — will be wiped from the face of the earth. It will not continue to exist. There will be no situation in which Israeli children are murdered and we all go about our business.

How has Israel gone about fulfilling this vow? By dropping what are described as super-bombs on Gaza, bombs that leave incredible devastation when used to carpet a city. The result has left landscapes resembling Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Does the ruthless murder of Israeli children justify the ruthless murder of Palestinian children?

And where do those mega-bombs come from? Ask our home-grown warmongers. Ask Lindsey Graham, Nikki Haley, Chuck Schumer, Matt McConnell, and scores of others. Is unlimited support for Israel related to campaign donations? The Guardian, which tends toward the left, did an analysis and found that war backers received the most in campaign contributions from the pro-Israel lobby. Where are the voices calling for moderation?

The United States has provided both mega-bombs and more limited weapons, but the devastating super-bombs seem to be Israel's weapon of choice to "eliminate everything."

During the Vietnam war, the U.S. bombed that little country with more than twice the bombs used in Asai and Europe during World War II. At the time the military considered even 500 pound bombs too large for urban use. But against Gaza the 2000 pound super-bombs are being used unsparingly.

To make matters worse for the fleeing civilians, there is no way out since neither Israel nor Egypt will accept refugees from Gaza leaving them stranded in tent cities that are often like a living hell. Brennan describes a 35-year-old mother of six living with her children in a tent city in south Gaza. She told The Wall Street Journal, "I wish I was killed in Gaza and didn't have to live this life here."

To see professed christians in Congress cheering for this and demanding more and more money to finance Israel's scorched earth policy is shameful. Have they never heard of just war theory? You cannot indiscriminately target a civilian population without committing a grave moral evil.

More and more proof is coming out that Egypt warned Israel of the impending attack. Did the political leaders decide the death toll would serve their purpose to launch all-out war against Gaza with a veneer of justification? There is more and more evidence that FDR and Churchill wanted Japan to attack the U.S. to justify our entry into World War II. It's very easy for corrupt politicians to consider the resulting deaths unfortunate but necessary collateral damage.

It's hard to get an accurate report of the death toll when both sides are filling the airways with propaganda, but the fact is that civilians are the primary target in Gaza. And Brennan points out that we will reap a harvest of hatred because of our support for unlimited and unmerciful war on the innocent. Add the atrocities in Gaza to the atrocities here on our home soil in the abortuaries of America and admit that we deserve here what's happening in Gaza.

One of the four cardinal virtues is temperance. It calls for a moderate response in all situations. God Himself called for moderation in Exodus and Leviticus when He cautioned the Israelites to go no further than taking "an eye for an eye."

Israel has a right to defend herself against aggression, but all-out war against mothers and children is a crime that calls to heaven for vengeance. Some people may not be willing to wait for God's hand of justice before they act on their own. As Brennan concludes his article:

We reaped our first harvest on 9/11. One of those six children in Gaza may someday even enact Youv Gallant's immoral "eliminate everything" pla because he watched his mother die of despondency. Americans should pray he soesn't Google, "Who gave Gallant those bombs!"

Let us pray and fast for peace and stop funding the annihilation of Gaza.

  1. "All-out war against mothers and children" - this is pure propaganda. Israel's military is the most precise in the world and has 4 times less casualty rates of combatant-to-civilian than the US army, which itself is also very precise. But, then again, we've all seen the plastic "Philistine babies", the suicide vests on what is considered a "defenceless civilian" by the West, but is considered a "brave martyr" by the Philistines... Also, Hamas is very popular among the "innocent civilians". Personally, I won't lose sleep over the Philistines of today - those who attack Jews are automatically condemned by God. And commit suicide by Israel, considering Israel's great military strength. The Philistines of today chose to become KGB lackeys - so they are now inadvertedly fulfilling the Soviet overall purpose for Islam (which was to be the tide of useless cannon fodder that might lessen the stock of Western arms - because it's good for nothing else).

Had Israel actually been genocidal, it would've done what Surovikin done to Grozny and Aleppo. Literally no building was left with windows and by far most of the buildings weren't standing. And, personally, I agree with the Israeli defence minister. Barbarians do not fear the Cross or the Star of David - they fear the sword, the mace and the missile. The Soviet-created state of the new self-proclaimed Philistines should rightfully follow the Soviet Union into the dustbin of history.

  2. So, Anonymous, killing moms and their children is a-okay with you? As long as they're the "Philistines of today?" I'm a mom and grandma -- targeting civilians whether you are Hamas or Israel is immoral and violates Church teaching.

The crew and their families of the USS Liberty which was attacked "by mistake" in international waters in 1967 by Israeli Air Force and Naval units might disagree with you. Not very precise.

So too might the ghosts German women, children and other innocents who were murdered in what the US Army Air Forces called the "carpet bombings" of German cities might disagree with you.. Not very precise.

Also the ghosts Japanese women, children and other innocents who were murdered in what the US Army Air Forces called terror raids which dropped fire bombs from low altitudes on wooden and paper Japanese cities. General Curtis LeMay took the very expensive and Norden bombsites out of his B-29s to make the bombers lighter for more firebombs. After the war LeMay said that if the USA lost he would have been tried as a war criminal.

And even LeMay, along with all the US Combatant commanders, condemned the use of the very impercise Atomic bombs calling their use uncivilized.

  5. "Killing moms and children" - Israel does not do so deliberately. In fact, Israeli military is the one explicitly trying to minimize casualties.

Church teaching is for the idealized scenarios of war, which cannot happen yet as of today. In war, people die - there's always more civilians dead than combatants, the question is "how much more". Israel is the one obeying that teaching, minimizing casualties.

For all of this, I blame the new self-proclaimed Philistines. In their bid to attain the twisted "martyrdom for Allah", in their arrogance and viciousness, they have brought war to the somewhat-peaceful lands of Gaza and Israel. There was always going to be a boiling point of Israel finally refusing to fall for the tears of the battered serpent and cleaning up the problem for good and the Philistines seem to have provided it.

Also, I did notice how immediately the article veered into "America is bad". As if the war in Vietnam wasn't a righteous war that had the objective to protect Vietnam from Soviet domination.

Someone fiogot to tell the Legions of Rome about that in 70 AD.

Nor did anyone tell Nebuchadnezzar when he stormed Jerusalem, captured the King, put the King's sons to death in front of him and then put the King's eyes out. Thus beginning the Babylonian captivity.

This presumes that a Zionist state has a right to exist in the Levant. This is false. The Jewish people have no right to a homeland, especially not in territory that is rightly either the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem or a province of the Byzantine Empire.

    1. Richard,

"Hamas created by Israel and USA" - got it, you're another "the West is bad", always. Even if that's not even remotely true. Hamas and "Palestine", for your info, was created by the Soviet Union - as openly revealed by sources like Alexander Litvinenko and Ion Mihai Pacepa. Islam always had more in common with Marxism and, in fact, the particular strain of Jew-hatred even comes from Russia ("Protocols of the Elders of Zion"). "There are 2-billion Muslims in the world" - you are forgetting a few things. Israel's military has confirmed and multiple successes against Arab militaries, both individual and combined. Strategy and technological supremacy does trump Islam's advantage in sheer numbers. It's telling that the Islamic Arabs have abandoned their tactic of brute force. Second - the faction you're hyping up, the so-called new Philistines of today are HATED by their ostensible close "allies" (the new Philistines repaid Egypt for it's help once upon a time by killing a beloved Egyptian culture minister - who, by the way, was a proponent of peace. Similar things happened in all of the "Philistine refugee camps"), while the rest of the Islamic world beyond the Middle East (Indonesia, South Asia) does not give a damn about the new Philistines.

      As for your other comments...

"Ghosts of Japanese women" - the entire nation of Japan, at that time, was the most vicious factions of WW2. Those women and children? Had the US invaded over land, those women and children would be impaling US soldiers on bamboo sticks, as they were trained to do. In the last gasps of Imperial Japan, it de-facto conscripted every citizen to fight to the death, with suicide by attacking the enemy considered a "glorious" end. Only the Emperor's surrender - the same Emperor that is still revered by pagan Japanese as a demigod - prevented more bloodshed from taking place.

"Someone forgot to tell Legions of Rome" - ah, yes. Where are they now, I wonder? Where is Nebuchadnezzarr, too? Where are the Nazis? The Soviet Union? Or, perhaps, the Assyrians? Or ancient Egyptians? Even now, the Jews have directly challenged the Islamic empire by their very existence - and the aforementioned empire can do nothing at all to them in terms of open military conflict. The Jews have survived 15+ vicious empires of the ancient world. Maybe, the anti-Semites of today would at least be capable of some pattern recognition - because, clearly, a people with such survival record are better as allies than enemies and having them as enemies have not brought success to any faction that made them their enemies. "Israel versus Judah" - Israelite tribes were right, because they rebelled against unjust taxation. Something, I believe, the Americans can certainly empathize with.

"Benjamin Netanyahu had been Israel's prime minister for most of the two decades preceding the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, and was criticized for having championed a policy of empowering Hamas in Gaza... Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian Authority were also critical of Israel under Netanyahu allowing suitcases of Qatari money to be given to Hamas,[652] in exchange for maintaining the ceasefire.[648] The Times of Israel reported after the Hamas attack that Netanyahu's policy to treat the Palestinian Authority as a burden and Hamas as an asset had "blown up in our faces".[648] - wiki

    4. Richard,

"Palestine" as an ethnonym was bestowed on Yasser Arafat and the "PLO" by the Soviet Union in 1967. Before that, it was strictly a geographical term - meaning Jewry, even. Not Arabs. Even the PLO leaders - like Zoher Mohsen - admitted this. They also admitted that "Palestine" as it is used now is solely a tactical move, because the Arabic state of Jordan cannot claim Jerusalem, while "Palestine" can - and the end of the "struggle" is, of course, Islamic Arabic unity and the eradication of the Jews.

Litvinenko converted to Islam when he was long since in Britain. "He hated Russia" - he hated FSB, the Russian ruling class. Litvinenko even wrote "Blowing Up Russia" about the activities of FSB against the Russian public. He hated the Soviet Union, too - the thing which trained Islamic terrorists in the first place. "Litvinenko was paid by UK intelligence services" - once he was in Britain, of course.

"There is no credible evidence" - Mitrokhin archive is more than credible. As for the whole "poor Philistines" schtick... That was a result of Yasser Arafat copying Ho Chi Minh's propagandists - re-framing the war from the Islamic colonialist genocide attempt that it was into a "struggle for human rights", transfering the wrong-doings of Islamic terrorists (apartheid, racism) to their opponents, the Jews. As with Ho Chi Minh's own drivel, American college students eat it right up.

"Empowering Hamas in Gaza" - on the contrary, Netyanyahu's ploy was to divide the Philistine enemy into two factions, make the world see Hamas for what it is. Netyanyahu permitted the transfers of Qatari money to Gaza, as to not be seen to be impeding humanitarian efforts. His misplaced mercy - and faith in the stupified world's ability to divine what the true enemy is - blew up in his face (too many Marxists everywhere), for such barbarians do not understand the languages of money or even basic logic - only a bloody sword that dashes them into pieces again and again. And, here we are - the October 7 attack was the Philistines' "repayment" for Israel's mercy, as well as would-be rousing call for other "allies" (as if Saudi Arabia would risk itself) to join in the struggle instead of talking (Israel/Saudi Arabia were talking about normalization of relations). The new Philistines are separated from the Islamic world at large because the rest of the Islamic world - while also hating Israel - is not as suicidal about it. They much prefer funding Marxist colleges in America, which would raise governing figures that would change existing policies for the benefit of Islam - all without a shot being fired. This was also taught them by the KGB.

Re: Israel's military has confirmed and multiple successes against Arab militaries

      You are very ill informed.

Israel success in the '56 war was due to the Anglo/French invasion of Egypt. In '67 Israel pulled a Pearl Harbor and launched a sneak air attack which destroyed the Egyptian on the ground. In '73 Egypt returned the favor and launched a surprise attack which won it back the Sinai and surprised again the vaunted Israeli Mossad. In '83 Israel invades Lebanon and became mired down in a 17-year guerrilla war which ended with Israel expelled from Lebanon in a literal route. In 2006 Israel again invaded Lebanon which again ended in another rout. Between '06 and the present the IDF has launched one futile attack after another on very poorly armed Muslims. Hamas which has not a single tank or aircraft has been fighting the high tech IDF for almost 5-months now.

    9. Richard,

"Turned Israel into your God" - not really. I just do not condone civilized nations cowering before barbarians. "Israel is vulnerable" - not really. You've managed to spectacularly omit all of Israeli successes, which were aplenty, considering the Arabs' unity at the time. There's a reason why the barbarians turned to treachery and lies. To do what they have failed to do militarily.

"Warmongers" - ah, I know your deal now. This must be the insult you're using for everyone that advocates resisting the barbarians' advance at the expense of the freedom-loving and civilized peoples. That's why there's this defence of Islamic terrorism, of Hirohito's Japan... Let me guess. You also think that Ho Chi Minh was a liberator of Vietnam and Putin's Russia is an army of saints from heaven, even through Putin himself literally tried to give Hitler an excuse in that recent interview.

Now, the Hamas falls - and it does so alone. "Demonstrations" - can those grant Hamas weapons and manpower sufficient to fight? Do they have some physical consequences? They don't. "Turkey and Pakistan" - ah, yes. Turkey that has it's own spats to worry about (Ukraine and Armenia/Azerbaijan are closer) and Pakistan, which merely talks the talk, but won't walk the walk, especially for an Islamic faction that is not even liked by Islamic leadership in other countries - and when the price would be upsetting the pre-eminent military in the Middle East. As I've said... They hate Israel, but they know when open warfare's not the way. They'll cheer on Hamas, yes - but empty cheers do not win wars. Weapons, supplies and men do, but those aren't given to Hamas. Egypt and the others have not forgotten the Philistine radicals assassinations and terrorism, either - in fact, they zealously block the tunnels, preventing their "fellow comrades" from escaping.

"There was no reason to invade Japan" - ah, it only raped the entirety of South-East Asia and was part of the Axis. There were all the reasons in the world to defeat Japan. "All the senior US commanders stated that Japan was already defeated" - it was when you look at the wider picture. But when you dig into projected casualty rates from the invasion and the actual culture of the Japanese at the time, you'd realize that the atomic bomb was the more humane solution. And it was a bluff, in the end - Japan would not have surrendered if it knew that America had only two bombs at the time, which were both used.

"Abandoned the worship of the one God" - which didn't happen until much later. Originally, they revolted for the right reasons. Besides, this kind of thing would obviously happen; God warned the Jews that mimicking the surrounding nations by installing a king would not go well.

  12. You changed the description of the picture at the beginning of the article..? .... I made a comment from my phone earlier today which hasn't yet shown up...usually takes several hours from my phone. But underneath it you had, "What if this was Manhattan or Los Angeles?" My comment was "It WAS Manhattan on 9/11" and Israel didn't do that.

Hamas blocked the exit for their own civilians so the people could be used as shields. Egypt doesn't want the Palestinians in their land so blocked the southern exit at rafah.

I never believe statistics from Muslim outlets, just as I don't believe statistics from Ukraine. Are Israel's and Russia's statistics more true? Don't know but they ought to be given the same amount of press time.

There can be no 2 state solution because Ishmael hated Isaac. Ishmael still hates Isaac. Recently (2 days ago?) Hamas said it would continue it's terrorism against Jews.

Along with over 100 other hostages, he two red-headed Bibas children are still being held hostages with their mother, that is, if any of them are still alive at this point. Certainly the mother was raped by the three who took her to their house.

  13. I changed the picture so I deleted your comment, Susan. Isaac hates Ishmael just as much as Ishmael hates Isaac. Hate and vengeance are not from God. You intimate that the gang that captured Mrs Bibas did not rape her at all. And you know this how? They were the same group of men who minutes before killed young people at a music festival, raped and murdered families - men, women and children....but, according to you, suddenly upon capturing a young Jewish mother and her babies, the terrorists turned into angels. Your view of reality needs tweaking a bit.

Mary Ann, you say "Isaac hates Ishmael as much as Ishmael hates Isaac". It doesn't say that in scripture. I know that all people are God's children, and despise the killing of innocent people as much as you do, but also know at times God told the Jewish armies to kill every last man, woman and child of the enemy. God's ways are definitely not our ways. I don't know what news you read. Try going to the IDF X account for daily updates. Don't believe all things from the leftist media.

The Palestinians VOTED for Hamas to rule over them. Many of the "innocent" women you speak of are/were married to Hamas terrorists and let their children be trained at a very young age to become terrorists. Now the crocodile tears. They're all innocent victims of the Jews? Not hardly likely in 75% of the cases. Why aren't the Arab states taking in the Palestinians? They don't want terrorists there. Egypt? Same.

Meanwhile, while weeping over displaced Palestinians, the same amount of Israelis are being displaced, running to air raid shelters everyday while their country is bombed from the north and west in addition to Hamas missiles still whistling over their heads only to land on innocent Israeli citizens.

You need to read Leon Uris' THE HAJ.

You won’t be able to argue with people who think self defense takes priority over the gospel. They have to be corrected first. They’ll just poopoo it as trying to make Christianity a suicide cult.

Meanwhile the devils who run this world sell the idea of killing one’s enemies by arranging situations where people seek vengeance under the guise of self defense.

  19. Does Saint Comerford commit rash judgement against other people when he posts his self righteous statements that other posters are anti-Catholic, un-Biblical, advocates of mass murder of innocents, culpable of the destruction of Israel, and warmongers?

Just asking, since apparently I'm an ignorant convert who was never privy to Catholic doctrine until later in life, therefore not supposed to make comments which, in Comerford's pristine self-righteous psyche, makes me an anti-Catholic, un-Biblical warmonger bent on the destruction of Israel.

Warmongering is a great evil. It will destroy Israel.

    God bless
