Last night my husband and I had a telephone conversation with one of my husband's brothers. As we discussed family matters and shared about our respective grandchildren, we agreed that we live in scary times. The secular culture, under a demented president and a leftist agenda, is a mess! And the Church, which should be our rock, is teetering under the rule of evil men. It's easy to sink into discouragement and fear.

Bishop Guo, underground bishop of Mindong, was arrested yesterday along with his diocesan chancellor. It seems appropriate that this terrible situation is taking place during passion week! 

What is especially tragic, however, is the part the Vatican is playing in the persecution. The headlines below highlight the betrayal of the poor, persecuted Catholics of China who have risked much to continue praying in the underground Church that remained faithful to the Holy See. In today's modern Church, it seem no martyrdom goes unpunished. The real bishops are being asked to step down so government-appointed bishops of the faux Catholic Patriotic Association can take their places. Is Et tu, Brute the proper reaction or Do you betray your master with a kiss? Perhaps both.

Back in 2008, Sarah Palin predicted that if Obama was elected Russia would invade the Ukraine. Liberals ridiculed her up one side and down the other. Remember Saturday Night Live and Tina Fey's impression? She was relentless ridiculing a woman who is smart and articulate, unlike the liberals' darling, Barack Obama, who is glib as long as he has his teleprompter. Well, now Russia has, indeed, sent troops into the Ukraine. Obama's spies, so busy collecting information on American citizens, assured us this week that Putin wouldn't do it. And now we're told the newly-elected Crimean minister asked for Russia's help and soldiers have invaded and taken over the Crimean Peninsula. Telecommunications are down and to say things are confusing would be a massive understatement.
