Insanity at the Vatican: Will It Ever End?

Big papal smile for Greta; nothing but frowns
and scolds for "proselytizing" faithful.

....Not during this pontificate it seems.

One can only sigh and think of Job. "What did we do to deserve this, Lord?" And then remember our sins and recall that suffering can sanctify.  "Offer it up for the poor souls in Purgatory!" as my mom regularly advised us to do while my nine siblings and I were growing up. It remains good advice.

Suffering is good for the soul. Remember the spiritual work of mercy, to bear wrongs patiently...and, of course, to unite them to the cross of Christ.

But please, Pope Francis, -- praising Greta for being TIME's "person of the year?" And saying she is a "great witness" to Church teaching on the environment? This all sounds like an article from the Babylon Bee satire site!

• Cardinal Walter Kasper spoke a few days ago at an ecumenical monastery in Bose, Italy at a Conference on justification, the Gospel of grace. Among other things, he said, "the ecumenical program should be formulated in the following terms: an evangelical Catholicism and a Catholic Protestantism." What the heck does that mean? If both faith's compromise we can reunify? Hey, you Catholics give up on the indissolubility of marriage and evil of abortion and the Protestants will give up....um....uh....er...woman clergy? Yeah...don't hold your breath.

• Kasper also said that Catholics and Protestants are part of  "the one and only body of Christ, that is the Church" and ended his talk saying, "If we do not want the Churches to empty even more, we need to focus on the core." Anyone who has followed Cardinal Kasper's convoluted reasoning at the two synods on the family could easily believe he has no core on which to focus. Everything is up for grabs -- and that, essentially describes Protestantism. Empty pews are certainly preferable to empty (non-existent) theology. Kasper and other churchmen of his ilk explain why Jesus lamented, "When I return will I find any faith on the earth?" I don't think Christ will find much at the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity headed by Kasper.

Church Pop recently summarized a talk given by African Cardinal Robert Sarah about the liturgy. This is particularly timely since my book club is discussing this month the Vatican II document on the liturgy. The Church is certainly in crisis and degrading the liturgy, which hit a zenith in the '80s, played a significant part. The uglification of churches, clown Masses, jazz Masses, polka Masses, butterfly vestments, silly songs, liturgical dancers, puppet processions, removing crucifixes and tabernacles from the sanctuary, and other idiotic variations have turned full churches into empty spaces in many places. And sadly things continue particularly where bishops are married to the world.

Reading this article brought to mind the quote from Hamlet, "that one may smile and smile and be a villain." Kasper, like Claudius, is a poisoner -- poisoning Christ's teaching and attempting to seduce his bride, the Church. That, of course, is impossible, but he can certainly poison the faithful with his false and evil "hermeneutic of discontinuity."

Here's a bit from the article. I've highlighted some particularly cogent parts in red. My comments are in blue:

The false arguments presented to defend this doctrinal change [to allow those in invalid marriages who remarry after divorce without annulment] are camouflaged with the usual tactic of speculating about the ramifications of the practice of the ancient Church (the Jesuits’ Karl Rahner was an expert at this strategy). These modern theologians love to speculate. But despite their insatiable taste for speculation, most of Catholic theology is not speculative. The realm of genuine speculative theology is very small and limited.

Liar, liar pants on fire!

Note to Cardinal Kasper. If you're going to lie, you'd better be sure nobody taped the interview on his cell phone. (Maybe the cardinal didn't know cell phones can record.) 

Journalist Edward Pentin stands by his report and the audio tape has it all. ZENIT took it down, but everyone knows know who was telling the truth. Sadly, it wasn't the "man of God." Why does this remind me of this week's readings about, "Woe to you  pharisees?"

Well, at least Cardinal Kasper has a wide choice of confessors from which to choose. On the other hand, liberals tend to believe in the fundamental option so what's a little lie even if it damages the reputation and career of a reporter? 

Two thumbs up for Edward Pentin for exposing Cardinal Kasper for the kind of man he is -- without integrity.
