The Shroud of Turin and the Face of Jesus

When I saw this image of Christ the King, I fell in love with it. One of the main reasons is because it looks so much like the face of Jesus reconstructed from the Shroud of Turin. All of the hoopla from unbelievers trying to say the shroud was a medieval fake has fallen by the wayside. The carbon dating that supposedly proved it wasn't old enough to be authentic was taken from a sample corrupted by the fire of 1532. No one has ever been able to recreate an image like that of Christ on the shroud by artificial means. Certainly, the technology to try to fake it was not available to the ancients.

A Message from the Real Mother Cabrini about Faith, Family, and Country

I did not like the film about Mother Cabrini which missed the essence of her humble and obedient nature and her intense love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As portrayed in the movie, she seemed more in love with herself and her vision than with Christ.

Despite the saint's firmness when following God's will, she was a profoundly humble and obedient religious who treated others with respect. I particularly disliked the screaming scene in the movie where she insulted the fictional mayor's fictional assistant. What a slander against a holy woman who wished to model herself on Our Lady!

Is Christ the King of the Nations on Earth or Just King in Heaven?

I was speaking with a priest after Mass last Sunday morning on the Feast of Christ the King. (In the traditional calendar we celebrate the feast on the last Sunday in October as established by Pope Pius XI in 1925. Pope Paul VI moved it to the last Sunday of the liturgical year.) Father mentioned a number of formerly Catholic countries that removed acknowledgment of the Lordship of Christ and his social Kingship from their constitutions. The only two I remember him mentioning were Ireland and Columbia, although there were several others.

Matthew 24 offers a sobering picture of our era, perhaps of every era since they are all filled with both environmental, cultural, and spiritual challenges. We would do well to behave as if we were in the end times because, in the hour of death, we all are all in the end times. 

And when he was sitting on mount Olivet, the disciples came to him privately, saying: Tell us when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the consummation of the world?

We are born for a great enterprise – the monumental conflict between the forces of good under the banner of Jesus Christ versus the forces of evil under the prince of this world. Every person on earth was delivered on the battlefield. Recognition of that fact is impressed on Catholics from the earliest moments of life. On our baptism day the priest anointed us as soldiers committed to fight in the Church Militant. Later, confirmation confirmed our duty and gave us the strength to persevere. The sacraments initiate us into the battle and give us the weapons we need to fight. Our demonic enemies, vicious and powerful, are a lot smarter than we are. So unless we put on the armor of God, make use of the weapons of spiritual warfare, and embrace the battle strategy of our generals we are no match for the evil power of the bad angels. 

Not My President, Not My King!

The Congress certified Joe Biden's electoral steal yesterday following a tumultuous day that reminded me of the French Revolution. I wish those protestors who went to the Capitol had stopped at the entrances, knelt down, prayed the rosary and sung hymns. 

Like the Catholics in the Vendee who rose up against the Reign of Terror, their grievances are legitimate and I share them. Sadly, they embraced the tactics of the enemy which now will become justification for further draconian measures against we the "deplorables." It was a sad day for all of us on many fronts.

Who is the King of Your Heart?

On the Feast of Christ the King....What matters to you most? Your possessions? Your significant other? Your next meal? Your addiction?

Why would you settle for things that will fade, rust, and die? Even the people in your life are a threat to your salvation if they become idols who take the place that only belongs to God. When you love them in Him, your love for them is true and pure and good.

But do you know God? Do you know how intimately He loves you and wants to be the Lord of your life? Bow down today before Christ our King and beg Him to show His face to you. Once you look into His eyes, truly look into His eyes, nothing in life will ever satisfy you again except your relationship with Him! "O Lord, you made our hearts for Thee and ever restless will they be until they rest in Thee." (paraphrasing St. Augustine)

Lord Jesus, reign in my heart and make me grow ever closer to Your Sacred Heart that beats with such love for me. Mary, my mother, take my hand and lead me to your Son that I might be His humble maidservant as you were!

I love you, Lord Jesus, increase my faith.

Let us pray for true and meaningful reform. Please join the novena. You can do the short version by saying the prayers with an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be or the longer version joining the prayers to Mary's rosary.
