Liberty Crumbling took first prize at the 2019 Texas Sand Sculpture Festival.
Sadly, Lincoln contributed to the collapse of liberty by strengthening the centralized government and gutting the sovereignty of the states. The more centralized the government, the greater the risk of tyranny.
The Framers thought the Constitutional separation of powers among the three branches of government would guarantee the survival of our constitutional republic. They never envisioned the disaster we would have today with an oligarchy on the Supreme Court eviscerating laws passed by Congress and the states, a President with a phone and a pen who would usurp the authority of just about everyone, and a Congress so vile and corrupt that most come into office with modest incomes and leave millionaires.
The Constitution gives limited powers to the central government leaving the rest up to the states. Education, for example, belongs to the states, but that hasn't prevented the government from massive meddling and interference.
Today, the only possible brakes to an out-of-control central bureaucratic government are the states. We're seeing them challenge the legislation from the Supreme Court (who usurped the role of lawgiver) which overruled every state law protecting little ones waiting to be born. When the court ushered in that abomination through Roe v. Wade they turned the country into a battlefield that is turning nuclear today. Some states are pitching out the disastrous Common Core national standards in education which was another top down failure.
The battle in America is becoming more obviously a confrontation between those who still have a moral sense based on faith and/or the natural law and those who have lost even a loose grip on reality. Whether the nation can survive is a big question mark. But that is no cause to despair. Consider how the man in the street faced the collapse of the Roman Empire with the barbarians at the gates. Without the collapse of the old Roman Empire the Holy Roman Empire would never have risen. Western civilization, instead of being based on the Judeo-Christian ethic might have remained a culture based on Greek and Roman paganism. As long as we cling to Christ Jesus, we have nothing to fear.
Our Lady of America, pray for us.
