The Ghost of Sunday (and every other day)!

Do you remember the description of Scrooge at the end of A Christmas Carol? He was a man who "knew how to keep Christmas," something he learned from the three ghosts. Perhaps we need three ghosts today to help us "keep" Sunday: the Ghost of Sunday Past, the Ghost of Sunday Present, and the Ghost of Sunday Future. If those ghosts visited us today what would those visits look like?

Best Black Lives Matter Ever

So how do I know that the Tavares, Florida, Black Lives Matter is the best one ever? I’ve only been to this one but it’s the only one I need to go to. Here’s why. No one was killed, no one was overtly angry, no marchers were bussed in from Orlando, there was no hatred, no yelling, no riots, no guns, no danger – not even a hint of it – and no incivility on anyone’s part. It didn’t make the nightly news across the nation but Tavares’ Black Lives Matter March was a first rate act.

People were friendly, smiling, kind to each other, excited to be able to have a march to express their rights and their thoughts. It was well organized by 26 year-old Erin Haynes, who attended Florida A&M University for two years and plans on studying broadcast journalism at Lake Sumter State College in the fall.

Marchers began assembling in the park by the lake at 6pm (Sunday, July 31) where Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” played through speakers. At 6:15 Erin made a short speech where she insisted that the march was to be peaceful, saying, “We want to relay a message of peace, unity and equality. That’s what it’s all about. No acts of violence will be tolerated.” In addition Haynes said that she wanted people to know that while the march is focused on the Black Lives Matter movement, she believes that all lives matter and blue lives matter. All races, religions and ages of people were welcome in the march.

We're at the Chesterton Conference at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, PA. I have to say that Chestertonians are some of the happiest people on the planet. We're having a rollicking good time! This morning we heard a great talk on Chesterton's joi de vivre and this afternoon we listened to the conversion story of a magician (who makes his living in the banking industry) who came to the Church after twenty-five years of trial and error, through the impact of Chesterton. His story made me think of one of my favorite poems, The Hound of Heaven. He finished his talk with a few magic tricks. Chesterton would have loved it!

Biden had to get special permission to do this, so we know it was an act flaunting his contempt for Catholic teaching on marriage. What will be the repercussions from Cardinal Donald Wuerl (Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.) or Biden's Wilmington bishop, W. Francis Malooly? I'm not holding my breath. Several bishops have recommended in the past that Biden be banned from speaking in Catholic venues and abstain from Communion, but there's no evidence he's ever complied.

If I speak of Islamic violence, I must speak of Catholic Violence
