We Are All Pilgrims on the Journey of Life

I'm reading an interesting novel recommended by Fr. Z, Pilgrims by M.R. Leonard. (At least I think I read about it on Fr. Z's website, but I couldn't find it when I went searching.)

The premise is interesting. An alien race makes first contact with the earth. Are they friendly or is Armageddon coming? The ship doesn't respond to earth's attempts to communicate. When they land, they speak Latin and the only person they are truly interested in meeting is the pope. The reason they didn't respond to any government contacts is they didn't come from the holy father. Catholic aliens in search of priests? What an intriguing premise.

The main character is an out of work Latin teacher who not only reads, but speaks Latin and so he becomes translator for the pilgrims who've spent hundreds of years crossing the universe in search of the Eucharist.
Sound crazy? It's a fascinating read.

Many reviewers compare it to St. Augustine's Confessions. You can check out Eric Sammons review at Crisis or visit Michael Leonard's website here. If you decide to read the book, (warning -- it's definitely not for children) I guarantee you won't be bored. There are plenty of thought-provoking elements. And one wonders. Is earth the only planet in the vast universe with intelligent life? If God created other intelligent beings on other worlds, did they pass the test of love and obedience? Are there Edens out there where the first parents didn't fall like C.S. Lewis presents in his space trilogy?

If you're heading out on vacation and want a hard-to-put-down novel, Pilgrims won't disappoint. If you decide to read it, I'd enjoy hearing what you think about it in the comment section.
