Everyone with eyes believes in "micro-evolution," a misnomer that is more accurately called "adaptation" or "natural selection." As a beekeeper, I can personally testify to the adaptation of God's little honey makers. 

When giant European and Asian hornets began invading hives, the bees "learned" how to react to the predators who can decimate their population in minutes! The little ninjas learned to surround the hornets, turn on the heat and cook the scout hornets before they could go back and bring their hornet armies. Those hives that react by immediately surrounding and attacking these giant predators survive. Those that don't, die. That is an example of adaptation and natural selection. The bee species that effectively respond to the threat survive and pass on their warrior genes. Have you ever adapted your behavior to respond to something? I know I have!

Then there is "macro-evolution." It is the perfect illustration of the philosophy of the "big lie," a term coined by Adolph Hitler in his book Mein Kampf:

Pope Francis made waves in October 2014 when he told the Pontifical Academy of Sciences that
evolution was set in motion by God through a “big bang.” He said, “Evolution in nature is not at odds with the notion of creation because evolution presupposes the creation of beings that evolve.”

The problem is that God did not create beings that evolve. Supporters of Francis’ statement argue that the discoveries of science in nature do not contradict creation. This is true if something factual is discovered in nature, but evidence supporting evolution or the “big bang” theory are not among these discoveries, no more than evidence supporting aliens has ever been discovered.

Evolution is Incompatible with Catholic Doctrine

All the Fathers of the Church believed in the Biblical teaching of Genesis chapter 1. There is nothing contradictory between science and creation. However, there is definitely a contradiction between evolution and Catholic truth. And trying to have it both ways with theistic evolution which ultimately denies original sin since evolution requires eons of chance changes with interim organisms dying and new ones arising. At the ripe time of evolution, God then infuses a human soul into a creature that becomes in His image and likeness. (See my previous post on why evolution makes no logical sense to a Catholic believer.) Lots of problems. Theistic evolution denies the immortality of Adam and Eve as originally created and denies original sin as the origin of death, since death preceded Adam and Eve. Evolution is a direct attack on the faith and must be vigorously repudiated by serious Catholics!

This unpublished letter to the editor of the Richmond diocesan paper (See below.) set me thinking. Evolution has never made sense to me. Does it make any sense to you to believe that a personal God sends His Son to be born of a woman whose genealogy includes non-human ape-like creatures? Really? Does that make any sense? Jesus, the Son of God, Himself was born from a family tree that included animals who literally lived in the trees. 

Ridiculous! 

The theory of evolution makes perfect sense, however, when one considers its founder, an agnostic. If you don't believe in God, you'll fall for anything. I don't have time to go into it here, but Darwin was dishonest. Much of his hypothesis on natural selection was based on work by Patrick Matthews. (Source) He even plagiarized terms coined by Matthews.

Editor's Note: I offer this guest post today from my friend, Tom McFadden, which I received in my inbox. Are your children away from the faith? Do you wonder what influences damaged their belief in our wonderful God who loves them so much? What is the world telling them? How many have walked away because of scandal-mongers in the world and in the Church. I haven't read Tom's book, but I plan to. I have his earlier book, Creation, Evolution and Catholicism: A Discussion for Those Who Believe, which is well worth the time spent reading. I expect this book will prove the same. Macro-evolution is a myth with little data to back it up. It's the pernicious creed of humanists. Would God, Who sent His own Son conceived in the body of a woman and raised by human parents, make the first man and woman the children of apes? Use your common sense!

The book below is an attempt to explain why half of all the kids baptized and confirmed in the last 30 years have left the Catholic Church. As of 2016 the Catholic Bishops knew that 14 million American Catholics had left the Church just since 2000. The book is actually part of a trilogy I've published that helps to explain causes and possible solutions to the ongoing apostasy of Catholic youths.

                                                     

Pontifical Academy of Science Gets Pro-Gay, Pro-Abort Member!

Another head shaker comes to us from the Vatican with the appointment of pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion scientist, Dr. Miguel Nicolelis to the Pontifical Academy of Science.

This comes on the heels of the appointment of a Protestant as head of the Academy.

Does any of this matter? Does appointing Protestants and those who diametrically oppose Catholic teaching to the Academy affect its deliberations and advice to the pope?

Well, the facetious question, "Is the pope Catholic?," pops into my head. How can it not? Jesus founded a Church where the fullness of the truth lies. That includes the fullness of the truth about the world that God made. Who is most able to carry out scientific inquiry? The man of faith and science like Louis Pasteur or the ridiculer of God and religion, Richard Dawkins? 

What's going on at the Academy implies that being Catholic and an adherent of Catholic truth is no asset to scientific inquiry and may, in fact, be an obstacle. That's exactly what many atheistic and irreligious scientists believe; thus they persecute and boycott those scientists who diverge from the party line -- evolution as the origin of life. As for "intelligent design" they deny it outright because they have decided, de facto, that there can be no intelligent designer. Many are true believers in their own god, the uncaused cause, better known as the primordial soup.

Obviously, science, using the scientific method cannot prove there is a God. Neither can science prove there is not a God. All it can do is observe, develop hypotheses and theories, test them, and draw conclusions about the material world. Believers know there can be no conflict between faith and science since the laws of science were made by the Lawgiver of Life.

As for the Pontifical Academy of Science, in 2004 Gerard Keane (since deceased) published a paper saying, "the Academy has deviated from its proper mission and contributed in no small measure to the current crisis of faith in the Catholic Church." After describing the history of the Academy and its makeup (about 80 scientists from varying specialties, many Nobel prize winners, most non-Catholic) Keane observes:

The idea of a Pontifical Academy of Sciences is praiseworthy but it contains inherent strengths and weaknesses. On one hand, the gaining of information from outstanding scientists and scholars can help Catholics to keep abreast of the latest scientific discoveries and any possible impact on doctrinal teachings....On the other hand, there is the possibility of theological error masquerading under the guise of science. As shocking as it may sound, I submit that there is a strong bias at work within the Academy which in its practical effect is opposed to official Catholic teachings concerning Origins. I contend that the heavily pro-evolution stance of the PAS has resulted in materialistic views being aired at PAS conferences and dissenting doctrinal views also being aired at such conferences....

When one looks at PAS Origins conferences, it is obvious that pro-evolution themes feature strongly. The Academy provides a vehicle for dissemination of evolutionary views, but wrapped in an aura of respectability as a scientific body which is highly regarded by each reigning Pontiff. I contend that the mostly non-Catholic Academy, through its prestigious position, has for many decades asserted effective and largely unchallenged domination of what is being taught regarding creation/evolution in Catholic centers of learning worldwide. Who dares oppose the Academy?

Why does the PAS have a pro-evolution stance when macroevolution has been shown to be impossible? Amazingly, it seems that no one among the PAS experts has even bothered to define exactly what they mean by the term “evolution”! Unless succinctly defined, the idea of evolution remains vague and endlessly elastic, giving rise to deep confusion. Biological evolution can be defined succinctly as “the natural gaining of higher genetic information not possessed by one’s ancestors.”

Keane ends his article with this conclusion about the Academy:

Why is the PAS allowed to conduct conferences in which speculation is made against declared Church doctrine? It’s not good enough for the PAS to issue a disclaimer for such views. The situation is not funny as ultimately the salvation of souls may be at stake. All around the world, the prestige enjoyed by the PAS means that Catholics who are poorly informed about Origins — whether they be clergy or laity — look trustingly to the Academy for guidance but instead receive biased and muddled pro-evolutionary views. The impact is much worse when you consider that many, many young Catholic children are being starved of truth about vital foundational doctrinal beliefs because of the effective and seemingly unchallenged domination exercised by the PAS over Catholic Education. I contend that the PAS is in fact facilitating the on-going crisis of faith within the Catholic Church, and is severely retarding the possible flowering of Catholic culture via evangelization with the truth of Special Creation in an increasingly post-Christian world. The obvious pro-evolution bias of the Academy has not only resulted in the exclusion from membership of Catholic scholars who oppose evolution but has also brought debilitating doctrinal confusion within the true Church founded by Jesus Christ.

It is about time that the functioning of the PAS was overhauled to ensure that it keeps within proper limits and within declared Catholic teachings. In the meantime, I urge you to fully support the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation in whatever sphere of influence you may have within the Church and within society at large, and of course with your prayers as well. Let us re-evangelize anew with the truth of Special Creation!

From the recent appointment of Dr. Nicolelis, the "overhaul" sought by Keane seems farther away than ever. In fact, one can expect that the PAS will continue to promote a world view that, in some cases, is diametrically opposed to Church teaching. Catholics need to remember the global warming hoax and the emails that showed so-called reputable scientists falsifying data and conspiring to prevent publication of those with whom they disagreed. Having a long list of initials after one's name is no proof of honesty or integrity. And in fact, the views it articulates are ultimately those of the individual scientists who make them and not necessarily to be trusted.

On Sunday, August 21st I sent to our mailing list an email about how Catholic kids lose belief in God because the Catholic education establishment has essentially incorporated theories of origins such as cosmic and biological evolution that are incompatible with Catholic doctrine. As an example I cited Bishop Robert Barron's incoherent belief that accepts the speculations of atheists as scientific facts but "baptizes" them by saying that "God did it." These "theistic evolutionists" are vague about what exactly God did and when He did it. I quoted the question posed by Fr. Michael Chaberek in his book Aquinas and Evolution. He asked how it happened that at the beginning of the 20th century evolution theories were rejected by Popes and Vatican Congregations and at the end of the 20th century, although neither the evolution theory or Catholic doctrine had changed, evolution theory had become at the education level, a mainstream Catholic teaching. One reaction I got to last Sunday's email came from a person on this mailing list who understands the problem:

I was thinking about the theories of Darwinian Evolution and Intelligent Design last night and this morning I found this interesting article. Our current pope certainly believes in Evolution and the Church accepts the possibility of a God-centered interpretation of the origin of the world based on evolutionary change. It is not, however, the godless world of Darwin's evolution.

I was particularly struck by Father's discussion of the Philistines capturing the Ark of the Covenant and placing it in the temple to their idol, the fish-man Dagon. Those who try to unite evolution to Christ are like the foolish Philistines who sent the Ark back to Israel in a panic. Let us pray those embracing the theory of evolution wake up before they come to the same bad end as the Philistines and the calf-worshiping Israelites.

He had earlier expressed dismay at how quickly Church leaders sought to appease dissidents and how slowly they sought to please God. He gave the example of how quickly the USCCB was willing to change the words of institution from “for all men” to “for all”, in order to appease radical feminists. In contrast, it took over four decades for them to concede that pro multis means “for many”, not “for all”. He went on to point out that The Roman Catechism specifically addressed this issue over four hundred years ago. Yet the Vatican chose to ignore this clearly delineated teaching in order to approve translations of liturgical texts that tended to prioritize relevance over Revelation.

The man also pointed out his consternation over the current HHS-USCCB controversy.

The Fathers and Doctors of the Church Rejected Evolution

Adam and Eve began to experience the
effects of sin from the moment they
disobeyed God and were expelled from
the Garden of Eden: disease and death!

They taught that creation was the work of God alone, that the "works of nature" (according to St. Thomas Aquinas) presuppose creation. You can't extrapolate from the natural order back to the beginning of things.

Harmful mutations, disease, etc. are all due to sin. The "bondage of decay" is due to original sin. As soon as Adam and Eve were driven from the garden, they began to suffer the consequences of sin: degeneration and ultimately death. Of course they were so physically perfect it must have taken hundreds of years for their bodies to deteriorate to the point of death.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church says nothing about evolution per se, but it says plenty about creation that points away from evolution:

We believe that God needs no pre-existent thing or any help in order to create,nor is creation any sort of necessary emanation from the divine substance. God creates freely "out of nothing." (CCC 296)

 Just like Genesis says!

It is a happy occasion that your visit coincides with the Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII, two great figures important for the Church in our times. I am grateful as well for the presence and participation of the Delegate for the implementation of the LCWR Doctrinal Assessment, Archbishop Peter Sartain.

As in past meetings, I would like to begin by making some introductory observations which I believe will be a helpful way of framing our discussion.

Sunday Meditation: Guest Post -- Watch Your Language! Words Mean Something!

As the juggernaut of the Culture of Desecration and Death continues to push for the secularization and perversion of humanity, it is worth noting that Church leaders have been seriously remiss by allowing its premises to pollute even the Church’s New Evangelization.

Specifically, many Church leaders have embraced the premises contained in secularist language to pollute even the sanctuary of the Church. For example, many seem to agree that the Eucharistic Christ is either not a person or a transgendered person by routinely referring to Him as “it”. Note how, even in the officially approved translation of the commingling prayer before the Agnus Dei, the  Eucharistic Christ is referred to as “it’, not as “Him”. And the laity routinely and without correction refer to Him as “it”, just as they glibly and without correction refer to His Precious Blood as “wine”.

Do You Believe in Evolution? Why?

Many evolutionists have put forth theories that are ridiculous and mindless.They are true believers in the worst sense because, rather than looking at things scientifically, they force science to fit their belief. Many are atheists who hate the idea that God might actually have created things by fiat. "Let there be light!" and light came into being.

Let's take a look at just one true believer and one example of what he calls "evidence" for evolution. Dr. Jerry Coyne claims that embryology proves evolution. One point he makes is that the embryo in utero has no need of the hairy coating called lanugo and that proves we are descended from primates. Here's his evidence:

Moles, Groundhogs, and Termites: More on the LCWR

If you live out in the country you know what a nuisance ground hogs and moles can be. If you live anywhere in the south you know all about termites and watch out for signs your home might be infested. All these pests undermine the integrity of buildings and land and create hazards for farm animals as well. They are the perfect metaphor for the internal enemies of the Church. Any Catholic with an ounce of awareness knows there are groundhogs, moles, and termites in the Church undermining the faith. And among the worst are the members of the LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious) distorting what it means both to be a Catholic woman and a consecrated religious. Since the CDF (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) exposed problems in the organization a few months ago and called for reform, the dissidents have been busy lining up supporters and painting themselves as victims of the mean old misogynist males at the Vatican. They've outlined their immediate strategy in a position paper that rejects the reforms and outlines their strategy for the dispute with Rome. It ends with an interesting statement:

Created in 1956, LCWR has a history of being at the forefront of change and renewal in the US Catholic church as well as acting as a strong advocate for social justice in society.

Let's take this apart. First of all, there is no such thing as a "US Catholic church." (Note the small c for "church"). There is only the Holy Roman Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ on the rock of Peter whose successor is Pope Benedict XVI. By using this phrase, LCWR has already declared its separateness from Rome, the same thing that happened in the 19th century with the heresy of Americanism. Americanism basically declared the situation unique in the U.S. and emphasized individualism thereby undermining Church authority. John F. Kennedy's speech in Houston in 1960 where he declared his independence from the Church was a prime example of Americanism. It's been echoed by other Catholic politicians like Ted Kennedy, Mario Cuomo, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, and John Kerry. But not only politicians promote the mindset. Priests and religious who use personal conscience to undermine Church doctrine (Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was an expert in this department.) also illustrate the infection of Americanism. A particularly insidious example is the healthcare debate. Waving the flag of independence, Sr. Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association, defied the USCCB (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) and  was so instrumental in passing Obamacare the president invited her to the signing and she received one of the pens. LCWR honored her for it. So LCWR immediately places itself among those thumbing their noses at Church authority proclaiming by their actions that the U.S. "church" is different and the hierarchy have no right to exercise authority here.

But what does LCWR mean when it says since 1956 their organization  has been at the "forefront of change and renewal?" Change for change's sake is typical of the modernist heresy which is characterized by a break from the past. All tradition is suspect and novelty is pursued for its own sake. That attitude of rejecting the past is certainly reflected in the history of LCWR, it's speakers and its positions. Donna Steichen outlined numerous heretical activities of the group in her 1996 book Ungodly Rage: The Hidden Face of Catholic Feminism. The '70s marked a radical departure by the LCWR from traditional charity (the works of mercy) to espousing women's rights including the Equal Rights Amendment, female ordination, women's empowerment, goddess worship, and a decidedly non-Catholic approach to "social justice." In 1986, LCWR held a "think tank" which issued papers written by teams that summarized LCWR's principles. Steichen says the essays:

 disclose a desperately uncertain religious vision, only tenuously related to the "symbol" of Jesus Christ, which looks to a feminist version of "liberation" for the world's earthly salvation. The notes and reading lists constitute a coprehensive bibliography in feminist theology.

But the extremism of LCWR isn't just historical. If people want to see how loopy the LCWR continues to be, they have merely to look at the keynote speaker scheduled for LCWR's 2012 August meeting. Barbara Marx Hubbard's address is titled Mystery Unfolding: Speaking in the Evolutionary Now.  Hubbard teaches a program called Agents of Conscious Evolution the purpose of which is to transform individuals to:

become a powerful catalyst of conscious evolution and play a role in one of the most exciting events ever envisioned: a planetary Birth Day on December 22, 2012. This day will help us shift beyond fearful separation toward a global sense of oneness, symbolically marking the start of a new era in human development....This intense and often emotional drama has one powerful solution: our conscious evolution as a species. We have within us extraordinary creative potentials that have yet to be massively unleashed, leading to wide-scale cooperation, innovation, sustainability and peace. The solutions are available; it is only the human software that needs an upgrade.

This says it all as far as LCWR is involved. Jesus' new covenant wasn't enough, but we need to "evolve" through a new age course in "conscious evolution" that makes us "co-creators" of the "next stage for humanity" to be welcomed on December 22, 2012. Hubbard's program is the same type of new age nonsense promoted by Marianne Williamson, Echhart Tolle, and Oprah Winfrey.  In fact, Hubbard participated with Williamson and Tolle last February in the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment. Take a look at Hubbard's video below and then read the description of her course on the website.  Hubbard has a background as a liberal and at the 1984 Democratic Convention, 204 delegates placed her name in token nomination for Vice President. (Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were on the ticket that year.) Hubbard is also a proponent of population control and has frequently written about it in her books. Her initial work with conscious evolution was funded by the Rockefellers. Reading what she says about herself is eye-opening and it is clear that she is as far from Catholic teaching as one can be. She believes Eve was correct in disobeying God to seek knowledge and describes hearing an "inner voice" that told her, "I will not let you die." (Do you hear the hissing?) That the LCWR would invite this woman to keynote their annual meeting epitomizes their misguided activities over the past forty years. They are unregenerate in their dissent and scandal.

Monday Thoughts on Darwinian Evolution

I found myself at our Easter festivities in an interesting discussion on evolution with one of our guests. It got me thinking about all the reasons I think evolution doesn't make sense, especially in terms of a loving and personal God. So let's just look at a few.

#1 -- God so loved the world that He sent His only Son to suffer and die for us. Did Jesus walk out of the sea one morning as an adult and begin His ministry? NO! Like each of us made in God's image and likeness, Jesus was conceived in the womb of mother. She was specially prepared to be His holy tabernacle, preserved from original sin to be a fitting prenatal home for the Christ child. Would a God who did that create the first human in the womb of an animal and have that infant child raised by a brute beast? I sure can't see that! The Bible tells us God called us by name. He loves us intimately. His first miracle was at a wedding feast. God loves the family and so I cannot believe our first parents were raised by monkeys or wolves. It doesn't compute.

I checked out a book from our parish library last Sunday that is giving me a lot to think about.  The title is Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, Old Testament, Genesis 1-11.   One of a whole series of books, it is a collection of writings from early Church fathers and saints.  The quotes are included in this book in order that the subjects of the quotes appear in The Bible.  It is or could be an excellent companion guide along side Holy Scripture.  Each of the quotes below corresponds to specific verses which are noted in the book.

We are blessed to have our local kids and their families visiting. Our youngest lives nearby and spends the night at home visiting during the day with her husband and little girl, but two of our children, their spouses, and eight of our nineteen children who live farther afield are in residence for a few days amidst a happy chaos. It is a far cry from our ordinary life of quiet order and I always rejoice in it.

Last night before going to bed, I went into the family room and surveyed the state of absolute disorder. It set me thinking on Richard Dawkins and the theory of evolution, out of chaos comes order. The room definitely brought to mind the primoridal soup with toys, books, wrappings, ribbons, cups, and cookie remnants all mixed together. All it needed to graphically represent the evolutionists' vision was a little spin to set it all moving.

I wondered how long it would take for this mess to evolve into a state of order and decided I would go to bed and hope it happened during the night. Unfortunately, it didn't and, as we left for the early Mass, several little bodies rested amidst the mess watching cartoons while parents slept peacefully. We returned to the remnants of breakfast and everyone bustling to get ready for Mass, hurrying out the door and leaving the youngest behind including one who was throwing up during the night. Chaos still reigned.

What do you think? How long would it take, if I (and the other adults) were very patient waiting for things to evolve into order? I don't think any of us will live that long. I detected the hand of order in my daughter-in-law as she sent one of the kids in to pick up and then checked on his progress. Hmm...was this an evolutionary intervention from an intellignet source of design? She is definitely intelligent and organized.

I think my Christmas household demonstrates how important it is to have an intelligent and benevolent higher power to bring about or restore order. And this thought segues nicely into the Feast of the Holy Family. God established the family as society's basic unit of order in a chaotic world. It is, when it images God's holy design, the bedrock foundation of society. One of the reasons we are sinking into chaos is the abandonment of God's order for a social experiment in chaos...and not a happy chaos, I might add.

If we don't watch out our culture will be little more than a mass of barbarians swimming in the mudhole that evolutionsts' believe we emerged from. While I can't envision Dawkins' world at the beginning, I have no trouble seeing where his chaotic thought is taking us.

As he says, "In the last analysis, evolution can be likened to the description of human history as 'just one damn thing after another'." I disagree with that view of history where one can see what is coming by examining what has passed, and I certainly disgree with his interpretation of a chaotically evolving world. Happily for us, the Designer lives. Now, if only we would conform our vision to His all would be well.
