Bishops Seek Our Help as Laity
The Catholic Church in the United States currently is facing three major cultural issues — disrespect for life from conception to natural death; succeeding attempts to change the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman; and continuing efforts to restrict religious freedom.
The bishops in America are addressing these issues through the courts, legislation and other societal means. They also are calling on the laity to join with them in a program of prayer, penance and sacrifice.
A USCCB committee headed by Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone recommended a program to run concurrently with the Year of Faith, from the Feast of the Holy Family (December 30, 2012) through the Feast of Christ the King (November 24, 2013). It was approved at the last meeting of the USCCB.
Specifically, the bishops are asking all Catholics to:
1. Daily: Say the rosary for a renewal of our nation’s cultureFor more information, check http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-andteachings/how-we-teach/new-evangelization/year-of-faith/life-marriageliberty
2. Weekly: Fast and abstain from meat every Friday
3. Monthly: Attend a Eucharistic Holy Hour
4. Annually: Participate in a Fortnight of Freedom in July-August
Splendid Idea!
